About this mod

Enriches factions by adding more instances of their themes, including some cut, classic ones already present in the game files, while replicating the consistent ambience of their bases in Fallout 1 and 2. Very much a vanilla-plus experience.

Introduction

I have a deep appreciation for Mark Morgan’s Fallout OST's. Obviously, so did Obsidian when they made New Vegas, but a lot of these songs became more generic in their use. "Metallic Monks" is literally in the generic mystical and generic peaceful media location controllers and used in abundance. Making that track and others specific to their faction's where this mod started, but I've also tried to strengthen the other themes unique to the New Vegas OST that’re suites of A, B, and C varieties with day and night equivalents. These escalate in excitement from A to C. Steps were taken so that the tracks will often keep playing between interiors and exteriors.

Overview of Changes

  • "Metallic Monks" will now only play in:
    • Hidden Valley Brotherhood of Steel bunker’s final 2 levels
    • Abandoned BoS Bunker (interior/exterior)
    • Brotherhood of Steel Safehouse (interior/exterior)

  • The cut Khan theme, “Khans of New California,” now plays in:
    • Red Rock Canyon
    • Great Khan Longhouse
    • Red Rock Drug Lab
    • Great Khan Armory
      • consistently between interiors and exteriors for entire canyon
    • Great Khan Supply Caves (interiors only)
  • Address Papa Khan with music befitting the event! No more haunting music when hangin wit Jack and Diane!

  • The cut Followers of the Apocalypse theme, “Followers’ Credo," now plays in:
    • Old Mormon Fort (interiors/exterior)
    • Follower’s Outpost (interior/exterior)
    • Followers Safehouse (interior/exterior)
    • New Vegas Medical Clinic (interior only)

  • The cut track, “Vats of Goo,” now plays in:
    • Jacobstown (interiors/exterior)
    • Black Mountain (interiors/exterior)
      • They're both founded by Marcus, and that's what plays in FO2 for Broken Hills, which he established.
  • Normally, both Jacobstown and Black Mtn. use the generic creepy playlist that's shared with enumerable other places.
    • While Jacobstown does have a thematic suite in the files by name, it isn't used there; instead, parts of it are at places like Camp Golf and Nellis Air Force Base, suggesting Obsidian abandoned the idea of any relation, which makes sense given how much they resemble the military tracks.
  • "Vats of Goo" is also the OG Fallout theme and plays over the title screen of FO1.

  • “City of Lost Angels” will now play once you've become enemies of Caesar’s Legion in:
    • Legion Raid Camp
    • Cottonwood Cove
    • The Fort (outside Caesar’s Tent)
    • Caesar's Legion Safehouse (YUP required)
  • That’s just like Camp McCarran for the NCR.
  • Prior to this, you’ll be hearing the A and B versions of the Legion theme in these locations.
    • This change completes the suite once you reach Caesar’s Tent, which already uses the C variation, making for a great, organic transition.
    • In his tent, I've also added back C’s night equivalent that’s never used.
  • The Legion suite gets little use without the player having significant positive reputation other than the more bombastic Hoover Dam versions (I usually just buddy up enough to get the keys to the safehouse and dip).

  • Freeside has a stellar suite, especially the night iterations, that're only used outside the gates in the Mojave worldspace.
    • Now all of it’ll play while exploring its exterior up until the gate before the Strip, in addition to Mick & Ralph's, one of the only Freeside interiors without some form of music and a big faction presence.

  • I made sure that the usual combat music would still trigger in all of the modified locations (at least what would've played in that faction’s main base) as I use Passive Combat Music Tweaked. But if you're feeling extra nostalgic, lStewieAl's Tweaks and Engine Fixes can disable them for even more classic vibe.
  • I didn’t really want to change the rest of the playlists too much, so I just substituted “Gold Slouch” where "Metallic Monks" was previously used, which I think has a greater mystical, peaceful atmosphere anyways (MM has bomb sirens in it, lol - so peaceful).
  • The Wrecked Highwayman now plays none other than “My Chrysalis Highwayman" for a bonus.
    • It's how the Chosen One would've wanted it to be.

Installation and Compatibility

Just use MO2 and activate it, specifically this fork, Mod Organizer 2 - ModdingLinked Edition, but you can just sling the .esp into your data folder and activate with what ya got too. No DLC’s required, but they do use some base media location controllers. That means things such as Dry Wells behaving like Cottonwood Cove, which I consider a feature. Load order shouldn’t be a big concern, but generally, only use one music replacer mod. YUP changes are forwarded, most importantly, to the generic Legion camp media location controller, so it's entirely compatible.

Anywhere I added FO1 and FO2 music, I used the files from the Fallout1and2 data folder. These've been found to have better quality, as pointed out by people such as Panzerman11. However, I highly recommend pairing this with willssi's Classic Fallout Music Restored - ESPless for absolute clarity and to revitalize the rest of the Mark Morgan songs already in vanilla. It will work alongside this mod with no issue!

Credits

I take great inspiration from mastahbossu’s Music Extraction and judangis’ Classic Music Re-Integrated mods, and I've used both of those before. I really just wanted a faction-styled approach with the steady tone of their bases in FO1 and FO2, and it has improved my enjoyment of the game, so I’m sharing it. You should check those 2 out, and see if you dig those more, as don’t use them with this.

Sweet6Shooter's Get Played Music Script was very helpful tracking down some of the exterior markers. Woooombat's expertly placed audio marker, expanding the reach of Red Rock Canyon's music from Hymn of The New West - Classic Fallout Music Rescore, has been repurposed here so that "Khans of New California" plays starting from the Great Khan Armory for complete, seamless bliss. Very kind of you to leave the perms open! Grab that if you want a complete musical overhaul instead.
