RobCo Whirligig toy drone ... and shoulder-mounted Machinegun

Permissions and credits
Changelogs
Whirly

Version 1.8

Description:

A toy drone can be found in the Goodsprings saloon: RobCo Whirligig.  When activated it behaves semi-autonomously and is reminiscent of an old fashioned gas-powered remote controlled (RC) helicopter model.  But once it latches to a shoulder ... it becomes a "Wireless High-Reliability Independent Government-Issue Gunship".

Notes:

• Whirly is not a "companion", but is kind-of-sort-of like one.

• Whirly is also similar to a mobile gun emplacement or shoulder-mounted machinegun.

• For a "companion style" Whirly, install the Whirly Mk II ProtoType and toggle "shoulder latching" to be Off.

• Whirly does not fill a companion slot, regardless of the type installed, and so will not count against the number of allowed companions.

• There are six Whirly styles to choose from: Whirly (the original Vertibird model), Whirly Mk II ProtoType, PlayGround UFO, Rocket Whirly, RobCo BottleCap UFO, and RobCo MotherShip UFO. For details see The Whirly Collection below.

• Two modes: shoulder-latched, and following.  While following, Whirly will temporarily shoulder-latch for combat and then return to following; the exception to this is the Whirly Mk II Prototype which will behave like a traditional companion and hence move and fight independently while unLatched.

• A multi-function controller will be placed in your character's inventory in the "weapons" category when Whirly is activated for the first time.

• To put Whirly in your backpack: use it's controller, or pluck it from the air while following, or when shoulder-latched just press-and-hold the F keyboard key to swivel the camera view until you can see the Take prompt.

• Whirly appears in your character's inventory in the "miscellaneous" section when taken.  Simply drop it again to reactivate, or use the controller.

• When the player character is "in combat", non-companion style Whirlys will detect and "lock onto" a target when you are actively aiming at someone; i.e. it does not select targets independently.  Once target acquisition is accomplished, shooting will commence and continue until the target is dead, out of range, leaves the player's line-of-sight, or the player switches to a new target.  On the other hand, the combat behavior of companion style Whirlys will instead be controlled by their AI. Whirly will not intentionally direct fire towards friends and allies.

• Weapons are upgraded every five levels as the Player Character advances to Level 30. There is also a quest to acquire perks and upgrade ammunition. Whirly's specialty is Ballistic weapons; the specialty of Rocket Whirly, PlayGround UFO, and RobCo BottleCap UFO is Energy weapons.

• A variety of Texture Packs are available in the Optional download area to alter the appearance of "Whirly" and "Whirly Mk II ProtoType".

The Whirly Collection:

Whirly is the original RobCo "Whirligig" release which uses a Vertibird model and has Ballistic weaponry. It is based upon a New Vegas object that was not originally meant to be used as a human or creature companion ... it is just an animated item that has been made to behave the way it does via ingenuity and programming.  So any noticeable quirks will likely be the result of inherent limitations.  For example, since the game's scripting language does not provide ways of discovering and avoiding obstacles, Whirly will pass through things in order to return to you (e.g. boulders, hills, walls, etcetera) - whereas companions automatically use built-in (non-scriptable) avoidance features.

Whirly Mk II ProtoType is a "companion style" Whirly, with independent movement and combat while un-Latched. The model is provided through the courtesy of MindBoggles who was kind enough to also rework the model and animations to tailor it for this mod. Special thanks also to Hopper31 for suggesting use of the model via his own mod (Vertibird Player Home), as well as for facilitating the re-use approval process.

PlayGround UFO is an alternate Whirly model from a delightful Jokerine collection of thingamajigs, thingamabobs, and thingummies that are provided as a modder's resource: Jokerine's Misc Resources Tutorials and Novac Bungalow. It uses Energy Weapons and has an onboard Alien Crew.

Rocket Whirly is a terrific alternate model graciously provided by Weijiesen (Grand Master of special effects and modeling). It also uses Energy Weapons.

RobCo BottleCap UFO is an energy weapon Whirly that uses a vanilla game model, and has an onboard Alien Crew: "It's From RobCo - It's Fun!!!"

RobCo MotherShip UFO is the MotherShip Zeta model as happily suggested by tog999, with contributions by Shardoom in resolving usability issues.

Compatibility:

If upgrading Whirly (the original version) v1.4 or earlier: a newer Texture Pack must also be installed to change Whirly's appearance if desired; do not use the older textures if you downloaded any of those before since they are not compatible with the latest version and will cause problems. Note: a Texture Pack is several .dds files, whereas an older texture download is a single .bsa file.

The Miscellaneous section of Whirly's downloads contains "Whirly TTW Patchapalooza" by Jokerine. It is a collection of TTW compatibility patches for Whirly, Rocket Whirly, and PlayGround UFO.

Known Issues:

The UFOs may tend to disappear every once, especially indoors. This is the result of various game engine bugs / quirkiness / limitations. My scripting attempts to correct the issue(s) on-the-fly, however a UFO may simply disappear while in certain areas indoors, and reappear in other areas of those same interiors. In all cases, It is actually still present and will move around and fight as usual.

For a UFO with an Alien Crew, if it vanishes and does not return, toggle the "Crew" setting a couple of times via the Controller to see if that resolves the issue.

Please report any prolonged disappearances with as much detail as possible. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Installation:

Install using a mod manager, or unpack the mod and copy the .ESP and .BSA files into the game's \DATA folder, then enable the mod. Position the .ESP file anywhere in the load order sequence. WARNING: install *only* one of the main Whirly downloads.

Requirements:

No special requirements.

Known Conflicts:

Install only one of the Whirly variations for a play-through in order to avoid conflicts. No other conflicts expected.

To Uninstall:

Uninstall with the mod manager that was used for the original install, or delete the .ESP and .BSA files.

Permissions:

This mod may not be reused in part or whole for any purpose other than its original intent. It may not be uploaded to any other web site. Get in touch with me if you wish to discuss things; for example, translation into a non-English language.
