Not just another rolling bucket of bolts ...

Version 3.2

"Buddies Are Forever - or until one rusts away"

Mini F.A.Q.

What's this mod all about?

This is a full-featured Securitron companion mod with Quests and New Wasteland Encounters. Your buddy will have a Companion Wheel and a complete set of abilities. He levels up with the Player's character, gains enhanced armaments over time, and has a "passive" combat mode that really works.

How do I start? Where do I go and what do I do?

Go pay a visit to Goodsprings Cave. Explore and Scavenge.

How soon can I start? Can it be done as a first level character?

A moderate Repair Skill (20) and Science Skill (25) are needed during the introductory quest, so a bit of character leveling may be necessary.

Do I have to begin a new game to use this mod? Or can it be used with a saved game?

You do not need to begin a new game to use this mod. You should be able to install it and use it with an existing saved game. Buddy is then adjusted to be compatible with your character's current level.

However, Buddy has context-sensitive dialog for the earlier parts of the game which involves NPCs, quests, and locations. So for the most entertainment value, it would be better to have either a brand new character or a saved game where The Ghost Town Gunfight in Goodsprings has not yet been started.

My new Buddy sometimes gets stuck in places and can't move, or simply disappears. What do I do?

Equip and use the Recaller that has been placed in your inventory. It can be found in the Weapons category.

Does this mod conflict with other mods?

This mod is not compatible with "Simply Uncut - New Vegas".

SOME NOTES ABOUT BUDDY:

Buddy has something to say ...

This message appears when Buddy has something to talk about. It may be related to a current quest or situation, or it may just be an opportunity for idle chatter. Early on, while conversing with Buddy, there is an opportunity to select whether idle chit-chat is okay, or should be discontinued.

Buddy is a "Good Guy"

Keep that in mind when installing this mod, and see the "Bad Guy" sections in Buddy Bot F.A.Q. and Spoilers.

Buddy is designed to not be over powered

Ideally, he should never dominate a fight while you just stand around watching and twiddling your thumbs. Instead, his presence should prove helpful during conflicts and potentially prevent them from becoming overly iffy.

REQUIREMENTS:

Only the basic game is required. You do not need any of the DLCs.

INSTALLATION:

First click the FILES tab to see the list of available downloads.

Select only *one* of the Main Files to install. They differ only in the appearance of Buddy; which can be changed later via a patch file.

Click the "Download with Manager" button to automatically install using a Mod Manager. For manual installs, click the "Download Manually" button to download the mod, unzip it, copy the files and folders into your game's DATA folder so they merge with the existing items - allow overwriting of files.

Lastly, activate the mod.

LOAD ORDER REQUIREMENTS:

There are no Load Order requirements at this time. Position the .esp file wherever you like.

SAVED GAME COMPATIBILITY:

This mod should be compatible with any saved game.

UPDATING OLDER VERSIONS:

Install the new version, allowing overwriting of files. Or uninstall any older version, then install this new one.

UNINSTALLING:

Use the uninstall/deactivation mechanism if you used a mod manager.

To manually uninstall, delete the following files: Buddy Bot.esp, Buddy Bot.bsa

KNOWN CONFLICTS:

This mod is not compatible with "Simply Uncut - New Vegas" and "I Fought the Law - NCR Start".

If there are issues with Buddy's dialog, then perhaps a mod has been installed which breaks the dialog for NPCs in other mods. These mods have been known to break text-based dialog in the past: "Children of the Wasteland", "Jocelyn", "Factions Reloaded", "Baker in the Sun", and "Talking Deathclaw Companion". So be wary of installing them unless their issues have been resolved.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

Since this mod uses non-standard values for companion "healing" and requires spare parts instead of stimpaks, special scripting is required to handle mouse clicks when "healing" via the Companion Wheel. As a result, the health numbers that you see may not always appear to be quite right until you briefly move the mouse cursor away from that "pie slice" (although the actual health will always update correctly).

The trench coat that can be acquired during the initial quest is based upon an item that was never meant to be worn by a Player Character. It is marked as Non-Playable by the game. However, I decided that it, plus two other items, would make a nice set for a starting character - and so adapted it for general use. However, there can be visual quirks when walking with a weapon drawn in First Person view as well as some clipping around the Pip-Boy. Since I have no modeling skills, that is the price that is paid to wear it.

While nothing has been done to intentionally prevent this companion from being used with a DLC, there has also been no testing (much less verification) to ensure it works correctly in those places.

PERMISSIONS:

This mod may not be reused in part or whole for any purpose other than its original intent. It may not be uploaded to any other web site. Get in touch with me if you wish to discuss things; for example, translation into a non-English language.

RECOMMENDED MODS:

Going into and out of places (like buildings or underground) is the most memory intensive part of the game, because the game does not do a good job of unloading the current location data before loading the next. So that is when memory usage peaks, and it is the most likely time for an out-of-memory crash. It is very common for players to experience crashes during "transitions", and often it is because they have too many mods installed and/or use high resolution textures, etc. However, here is a list of recommendations that can significantly reduce the likelihood of such crashes during game play.

4GB Fallout New Vegas Updated - a special launcher that lets the game use 4 GB (instead of 2 GB) for 64-bit Windows:

NVAC New Vegas Anti Crash - an NVSE plug-in that handles certain types of errors that could otherwise cause a crash:
