No, Leviathan's mod does NOT work on New Vegas, it only works on FO3. I have made a working and edited version, with permission from Leviathan:

What on earth...So thousands of downloads aside you guys know this mod never worked and can never work without a .esp if you are using a custom folder mapped structer different from vanilla... you can't just dump audio files in a folder and have them play if they are using a folder structure you just made up on a fevered dream. You guys are hearing vanilla - by vanilla there are gunshots, dogs, barking, animal sounds, etc.

So fallout 4 and other moddern day engines and games require you to tell the game exactly what files to play and where. This mod has no .esp and I do not know of a engine that just knows to load any and all files located in x folder. You always have to specify folder, then exact file. To this point people are confusing this mod as a working asset with the vanilla amibent sound. To test my theory I pulled all the vanilla bsa ambient sound files and compared them to the sounds recorded in a video i took while playing with this mod installed after properly converting this mods audio files to match the proper format. When doing this the audio was in fact vanilla (no surprise i would have been surprised if it wasn't actually).

Look all im saying is that the audio in the vanilla files is region and time specific so the vanilla game has files that specify when to play night crickets vs day, that being said for this mod to work you would have to make a .esp file to make the game aware of region and time you want these audio files to play. If you download this mod you wont hurt anything but you wont help anything either. itll just eat memory for no reason. Like... damn guys how am i the first to realize this mod isnt real its a placebo. - on a positive note you could** use the audio this mod provides to make your own .esp.. itd be a lot of work though and obviously seeing how popular this mod is... well vanilla is perfect cuz this mod was always vanilla.

You are correct in that people are hearing the vanilla FNV sounds. However an ESP is not needed (it plays perfectly fine in Fallout 3, without any ESP). See my other post.

you dont need an esp. the game will have a sound record, and then the record is pointed to a folder full of various sound files. the sound record then picks a sound file at random from the folder. putting a file in makes it play. problem is these files arent placed properly for nv.

While this mod indeed does NOT work. The engine can load files without an esp, so long as they correspond to the folder structure of the game. These files are using FO3's structure therefore they will not work.

Why do you think BSA dumps (Unpacking the games files) work?

to respond to both Nodevski and Jacksonelhage - the issue is that this mod uses a custom folder structure that is fundementally different then the games folder structure meaning its custom but has never told the game where the new audio files are located. So as you all have also noticed this mod never worked and will never work without either* a .esp that tells the game were the new folders are OR if you rebuild the entire mod to use the actual game folder structure instead of a made up one.

I took a look inside the Fallout - Sound.bsa for NV and found that precise folder structure "sound\fx\amb\~regions\insects\wasteland\cricket\...files" and "sound\fx\amb\~regions\insects\wasteland\rustle\...files" -- thought it wouldn't surprise me that the structure is included but unused.

And I can confirm that it (unsurprisingly) works correctly in the FO3 side of TTW -- [Edit] and in the Mojave, much to my surprise.

This moment when you realize, that many of the ambient sounds are from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Absolutely stunning. ^^

For me, in the whole of my experience, it has never worked. No fixes have worked. No reworked files have worked.

It makes me said because, sounded okay. But. it's one mod among many, so

Unfortunately, the mod author seems to have placed the sound files in the wrong folders.

This mod works perfectly fine in Fallout 3. However the sounds will never play in New Vegas because they are in the wrong folders. For New Vegas, the devs have added their own animal sounds, some very similar to this mod. You are hearing these sounds, not the ones from AW2. I have fixed and pruned this mod and sent a PM to Leviathan1753 to ask for upload permission.

In the meantime you can fix it yourself if you like. If you want this to work you should copy the sounds to:

    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/animalfight
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/bat
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/birds/*/
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/bugmovement
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/crickets_lp
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/dogfight
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/hawk
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/howls
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/insects
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/leaves
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/owl
    Sounds/fx/amb/amb_desertdefault/rattlesnakes

Of course you have to pick the relevant sounds and put them in the relevant folders. You could extract "Fallout - Sound.bsa" first (can be done with FOMM) to a temp folder on your harddrive and listen to the sounds in amb_desertdefault to determine which sounds should go where.

Note that you don't need an ESP to make this mod work. The game randomly plays sounds from the above folders. Also, this mod is fairly similar to the vanilla sounds, so many people might not even need this mod. It does bring a little more diversity to the game however, you will simply hear more different sounds played.

The OGG sounds did not play on my system either. The OGG files are encoded at an overly high OGG quality setting and have a too high bitrate, some even at 240.000bps. This is overkill and it might be the reason some people do not hear the sounds. I have batch converted the OGG files with Audacity to a quality setting of 5, which yields a bitrate of 5000bps to 9600bps for these files. This is more in line with the original game's OGG files. I can now hear the sounds.

EDIT: It turns out that I was hearing the vanilla sounds... They are similar to the sounds from this mod. That means that I'm not sure if converting the OGG files is necessary, but it won't hurt and will save some diskspace. It is possible to get this mod working, see my above post for more.

Hey, sorry to bother you, but I'm confused as to how I'm meant to install these. Do I just straight drop them into "Sounds" in the data folder, or are there other folders that need to be created?
I would love to use this mod but have been having so much trouble :( so any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Easiest way to handle this is just install the mod with FOMM or whatever, then download Nodevski's better files from the link. Copy and paste the two folders to overwrite the original OGG files. They'll be in Sounds/fx/regions/insects or something like that. Not hard to find. 430 files will be overwritten. Delete 'Something Dying' from the first folder. Terrible sound.
