Ulysses had it coming - though he probably did not expect it. I do not think he had a death wish. As for Val........... as Brigand said - this was about a believable and serious as it can get. An act of desperation. And of sacrifice. Val does what needs to be done though she knows that she condemns herself to death. And nobody will ever know it
Ulysses didn't intend to die in the Divide, but he didn't fear death when it finally came for him. This is my second take on Val stopping the missile, and I admit this one was pretty moving.
Very nicely done, very different from the bucking bronco missile ride before. That was fun and over the top, this way comes off more believable and still fun.
If you thought the rocket flames or the storms of the Divide hurt, Val.... just wait until Ronnie catching us with you! I was actually expecting Val to have appeared partially flayed, even if only temporarily.
Making a missile ride seem even faintly plausible is quite a challenge, so I'm glad it came off well this time around As for the flayed look, Val is missing her bandanna and some hair, although it's difficult to tell from this angle.
If Val survives re-entry, she is definitely in for a kick in the shin if Ronnie finds her.
*Spoken with the voice of the Stanley Parable narrator* "In that small period of time, Ulysses was able to reflect on all the things he saw and done during his life. The life in the tribe, service to Ceasar, lonesome wandering and now this. He could not not quite place it, but somehow he knew that if he pulled the trigger that scary looking, giant of a woman would probably tear him apart. At that very moment he thought about his mother and his home, remembering the warmth of his bed and the tasty smell of his mother's cooking her Gecko meat stew. At that very moment Ulysses thought to himself: Oh, mama. "
