That's right, you can add them that way, but it's not recommended as then the items will only be available for the player to buy and the heradlic armour won't work.
This is a modders resource rather than a player's one, so you ideally should be adding these to the python module scripts and compiling them into your own mod before using them, that way everything will show up and work as intended.
If you want to see some of these ready to play with then I can recommend a New Dawn, plus there's already several mods out there that have newer and even more improved versions of these meshes already included in them, just look for anything set during the Hundred Years War or the Wars of the Roses to find them.
Also worth mentioning is that far as I am aware Prophesy of Pendor still has many of the unique meshes originally made by Brendan Rodgers (A2K) and Narf - which a lot of these are based on - except they've been given an overhaul and now have even better looking textures!

It took me so long trying to figure out how this works.
Basically, you add items into the game files as BuffyKillsVampires said. To make them appear in the cheat menu, you have to modify 3 "cheat items" values in the menus.txt file You have to go to that file and add the 3 "cheat items" value with the number of sections you've added to the item_kinds1.txt file. If you are using the source provided by BuffyKillsVampires then you add them by 12. To locate the 3 values, please check the following link. Also at the very top of this text file where it says "itemsfile version 3" right under it is a number that may or may not say 621. Change that to 633. If that number does not say 621 just take whatever number in it's place and add 12 to it

These items won't appear "straight outta the box". This is a modders resource, so the recommended way to install this is to add the items into the module source code and compile it using python, that way everything you want should appear in-game.
I'm having a lot of trouble installing this mod.... i just don't know what i'm doing wrong. I've put the texture files into the texture folder of my module, I've put the resource file into the resource folder of my module, and I've made my ini file look exactly like the one downloaded (yes i even tried the one provided when downloading the mod). And still i simply can't find any of the armors anywhere. Please help!

This won't get all of the items in the game, but it will put some of them in there.
So go into your item_kinds1.txt and at the bottom of the list, right above where it says

You need to put this in there (make sure you add a space before every line and the next 0 in the line under it or else it won't work)
