For those trying this mod lately and finding it screw around with your icons and controls I had the same issue. For me probably it was a load order thing, so I uninstalled and delete the mod then re-install again. Now it is working as intended. Hope this can help you.
Hey just want to update this - to anyone looking to do this on Windows 10 or above, USE THE VORTEX downloader (its free and one-click to set-up)!! Bethesda did an update and manually editing those files doesn't have the same effect. The moment you run their Vortex thingie it will have an option for "Fix ability to read loose files". That will automatically edit whatever files need to be changed, and then you can just download the mod (specifically thru the vortex option instead of Manual).
Again - do NOT try to edit those documents yourself, the new update has broken that process. It won't work. Use their vortex mod manager to auto-edit and install everything. You'll thank me later.
This mod is working great. I don't know why some people are having problems, but here are my settings: In Steam, I have PS4 controller support enabled I do not use DS4Windows
Important to note if you're using bluetooth or actually using the full functionality of the ps4 controller. Either by wiring it in or having the official dongle.
Are you using a PS5 controller? I literally did this and its still not working. I added the Interface folder to the Data folder (which is separate from the other folder with those 2 files to edit). I then went and edited both docs and launched through Steam. I am not using DS4Windows or any other controller emulator. Within Steam I have Playstation Controller Support Enabled. But it still only shows the XBox icons..
The mod works, though for some reason whenever I talk to NPCs the buttons for the dialogue choices appear as D-Pad even though I don't have a controller connected to my computer and DS4Windows isn't open too.
For those running the "NON" steam version (whatever that may be) add the *GAME* to steam via "add non steam game" go to documents and make sure fallout4prefs.ini is there (it should be) now, thats taken care of. turn on your controller (DO NOT USE DS4W) open steam, run the game via thru steams interface! (make sure controller support is actually on, it should be by default or detect a controller and ask) once you do this, upon the MAIN MENU of starting the game, itll have a "SETTINGS PAGE" make sure you change your buttons around THERE so that the next time you startup the game, its actually SAVED as if you do this in game....idk why, but itll bug out and youll be like the 50 other people mentioning it doesnt work right etc. it works right. im just not sure if the author added that one should use steams interface to run the game. (even GOG) versions work.
Hey, hello everyone! For all those who can't do it, I'll explain: The Fallout 4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini files must be found in the Documents folder/My Games/Fallout4", after that everything worked without using DS4Windows! Thank you all for your attention and greetings from Belarus.
YOU ARE AWESOME Thank you! You may need to go into settings (for me, the settings menu was the right d pad, so check ALL buttons) and change your controls back, but it DOES work now. It's not showing square for pressing X! THANK YOU!
Of note, Horizon Zero Dawn HAS built in PS4 prompts. The ps4 is kinda weird in that it won't really work as well off bluetooth. I don't use a typical bluetooth connection with it for that reason, as I want my audio jack and touchpad to work, and ds4 windows converts it to xinput, changing it to xbox prompts in most natively supported apps. So you got two options. 1: Wire in it. Plug a usb to microusb into the PC and the controller. That can at least get you going. If you want wireless, you gotta.. 2: get an official sony usb dongle. This sucks, because it was relatively niche use case for an already realitively niche use case. But, if you want to say have a pc hooked up as a console and play the game with FULL dualshock 4 support, including touch pad, LED, headphone/mic jack, etc, this is the ONLY way. It was $15, already overpriced for a glorified USB dongle that no one needed. Naturally, no one bought it so they stopped making it here. your only option to get one is to import one from japan. It will work, but I spent $75 on ebay to get one. Not fun. I bought 2 so I never have to worry about it again. This means a lot to me, unfortunately, I'm a relative minority. It's small, but I want my prompts to match what I use. It makes it feel more polished as an experience.
Thanks for making this mod, making it not work properly, and then never fixing it. Absolutely useless mod and no one makes a new one because they assume this works. FFS FIX YOUR MOD!

I had to reassign the buttons in the control settings though.
