Doctor Steiner had worked in the research department of polymer lab's for the past 30 years but despite being a polymer chemist he also had multiple degree's and had started his profession as a nuclear scientist specialising in rare isotopic experimentation.
After an accident though which had blown up and irradiated part of the old MIT now the CIT complex at the university campus he had been lucky just to get a job working at polymer lab's and his name in his old branch of research was now a byword for failure and dangerous research.
Unperturbed however in his own time he had continued to work on his latest invention, a supposedly impossible highly reactive auto fissionable isotope of Polonium with a ridiculously unstable 237 nucleon's in it's unstable core, it broke down from the moment it was created, a process involving nuclear enrichment through fusion based bombardment of stable atom's, and when it broke down it did so through intense nuclear fission but using a quantum isolation field he had found that it was now possible for him to store enough of the unstable isotope to create a viable and useful explosive mass.
Now Doctor Steiner's work was actually intended for his dream of conquering deep space using an exceptionally small and light weight engine system, basically using his impossible isotope to power it by creating a constant stream of nuclear explosion powered thrust from it's nuclear rocket nozzle so it was with some surprise when shadowy members of the government approached him, especially since he believed that NO one knew about his ongoing research but it turned out that they had detected the exotic radiation emission's from his basement laboratory while scanning for Chinese research when one of there detector's had accidentally monitored there own nation and so he had then found himself working for there deep research division's and there intelligence agency and in place of creating a fission drive for a space craft he instead developed a short lived highly explosive polonium infuser which would infuse standard bullet's with his reactive short lived material just at the very instant that they were fired from deceptively a small and discrete pistol.
The effect was devastating, the small nuclear blast from each round left little radioactivity but it hit with a kinetic explosive force equivalent to an artillery fat man projectile, however due to the extremely short half life of his creation the bullet's retained this explosive ability for only a very limited range meaning that application of this weapon modification was a niche project at best.
After the war his invention completely forgotten would have disappeared for ever from the universe had not your character finally stumbled upon the strangely modified pistol, the tiny fusion based radioactive enrichment system still working you find that once you activate it by toggling a small switch the bullet's are transformed into highly explosive and devastating projectile's and you soon wonder were this baby had been all your life.
