So, just realized that I forgot to have the Hermit Crab Egg reset Herbie's size and shell when it summoned him to you, meaning it would summon the van-sized Herbie, then auto-hire him. And since all of his companion dialogue is set to check whether or not he's one of the smaller sizes before even letting you talk to him (not to mention that you can't feed him or give him Rad-X in his big size if he's in it without any of his counter items, which he gives to you before the boss fight), that's a pretty big problem!
So to fix that, I've put out a small update that just contains the new version of the .esp, and the new version of the egg's script. Just replace those two files with the ones from the update, and you're good to go!
Alright, version 1.01 is live! I was getting some errors when I removed WW as a parent, so unfortunately that's still there for now (I need to just go through the entire mod in FO4Edit and see what else I used is from it besides the cage that I already got rid of). The rest of the changes I mentioned in my last post have been made, though! Herbie now has 75% quieter idle and walking sounds (his combat sounds are the same for now, but I can work on lowering them too if people are still unhappy), and a custom sandbox package that should help some with him wandering off before you hire him or after you dismiss him. I also added an infinite-use aid item called "Herbie Summoner" that teleports him to you when you use it. Finally, I added a misc item called "Hermit Crab Egg" to the Herbstrosity boss. After you kill the boss, you can pick up the egg, and after three in-game days, it will hatch back into can-sized Herbie, and he'll instantly be set to be your companion again.

I am having an issue that I need help with. I have feed herbie and got the message that he was growing but am not getting the dialogue option to give him the cleaned barrel to move into. Has anyone else had this issue. .is there a way to fix it?
Did you already give him the toy truck? He grows to toy sized first, then to barrel sized. You can find the truck in the same shed that Herbie himself and the barrel were in, and you convert it into a shell the same way you did with the barrel.
Yes already did the truck and then feed Him 5 more times got the message He was growing but then after I got the clean shell I dont get the dialogue option to give him the shell so he will move into it.
It could be that somehow his counter got mixed up. Try making the "concentrated rad-away" item and using it on him to shrink him down by one, since that will also reset his growth counter. It'll mean you'll have to regrow him again, though, but if you want, I can tell you how to immediately set him to ready to grow through the console.
Heh, this is so much fun, all we need now is forsomeone to make a vw beetle model with the right paintjob (you all know the one) that he can use as an alternate of the van - lol
