I just found out about this and am a HUGE Freeway Warrior fan (I've even expanded the first couple of books to double length!). Sounds amazing and I look forward to giving it a try as soon as I have the time.

Is there any way to get this mod in 2023? Thanks.

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. Haven't been here in a while :). The links to download are in the description in the "Mirrors"-section (click that dropdown). I've not tested it in years but should work at least with Vanilla FO3 since it's just notes. Let me know if you like it :)
Note: Some of the notes might be too hard to find (I overdid the difficulty a bit). In that case, easiest is to use the Geck (separate install) to find the note in there.
      Cheers!

I have been playing Fallout 3 and using Nexus since the beginning and somehow this golden needle managed to evade me. I stumbled across it through a link for car combat games. Finding mods like this are often a whole game in themselves and I'm glad this one is still up. I have found others in the past that have been taken down for various reasons.

I want to thank the author for taking the time and effort to put this together.

    Hi everyone,

I just replayed this mod and it works fine except:

    * If you have DarnUI some notes get the last part of text cut off.
    * If you have NMC textures some notes become invisible (changes some transparent textures).
    * Some of the notes can be hard to fine (high difficulty level) (see below about this).

I'm no longer modding Fallout 3 so don't have time to make a cheat sheet but if you ask here and I see it I will answer.

Otherwise, install the GECK (download from Bethesda home page).
In the Geck: search on All items for Node*, i.e. for note number 7 you would search for Node007 and from there you can see in 3D where the note is. The notes are named in the Geck according to this format: HighwayHolocaustNode007

I did find most notes (although I did make this mod that was over 5 years ago so a LOT of them I forgot )

So yeah, if anyone still wants to play this mod that would be fun for me (I had lots of fun just now actually ).

Also endorse if you like it!

Wow, I can honestly say this is the least known of all my favourite hidden gems. I can see things have been dead quiet for quite some time, and I'm surprised no one seems to drop a comment. By far the most entertaining note based mod I have ever played, and though I have not finished it yet, I can at least confirm that it isn't a sham (All the past comments seem to have only been made before actually playing, which I admit made me nervous when I downloaded). It's a shame that no one seems to want to give this a try, might be a reason why there is no part 2, but this gem is enough. The only complaints I have are that some of the notes get cut off in the pip-boy, though this can be a problem with DarnUI I think (just got it, already hate it, pain in the ass) it the second note you find gets cut off right before it gives the location clue to the second choice of that particular note. I actually stumbled upon the note in question luckily enough. I also notice that some of the locations can be extremely hard to find, one of the notes in Old Olney seems to be really well hidden, and I have checked every inch of the parking lot. My suggestion if you the author were to see this would be to add a spoiler file so that after a half an hour of searching, we could take a quick peak. I'm going to give it another 20 minutes, then I will just have to take the other option. Great mod, I guess I will be the first endorsement.

HI ThirtyPlayer, thank you so much for those kind words. Yeah, I put in a lot of effort on this and had a lot of fun in the process. I didn't quite get the positive feedback I was hoping for so I kinda let it fall into oblivion. But I'm gonna play it again now 5 years later and see if I remember where all the notes are. I loved choose your adventure books as a kid and thought it would be the perfect note mod for Fallout 3.

In retrospect, some of the note clues may have been too hard I realized. I just didn't to make it too easy (success!).

How did it go for you? Did you finish or play a few hours into the mod?)

It's really awesome you liked the mod since I thought the Internet basically didn't like it since no one wrote me anything about it. I could have done more marketing tho I suppose :-D

    Hi!

Sorry for answering so late. The note is on the top floor of Temple of the Union in a corner!

Let me know if you can't find and I'll send a picture.

    Cheers!

Highway Holocaust is the first of four gamebooks in the series "Freeway Warrior", created by Joe Dever:

    1. Highway Holocaust (198
    2. Slaughter Mountain Run (1989)
    3. The Omega Zone (1989)
    4. California Countdown (1989)

The last three books have not been made available online as of yet on the Aon project web page (http://www.projectaon.org/) but I did find copies of the remaining books on Amazon. So if you enjoyed playing Highway Holocaust you can use and develop your character with further skills when you play the next books in the series.

For more information on "Freeway Warrior", see the link "Highway Holocaust on Wikipedia" under the "Mirrors"-tab.

I thought it wouldn't take so long at first since it's simply based on notes which are easy to put into the geck but it still took almost three months on and off. In the end I entered over 400 notes but most time was spent on thinking up fun hiding spots. It was a lot of fun though so I'm happy it wasn't over in a flash :-). I look forward to hearing your comments when you get a chance to play it.
