    Your link:
    Download this. [www.ntcore.com]
is broken. Fixing the link to go to the domain proper, I 'assume' we are supposed to download the 4GB Patch that is found there.

Your instructions say to have that program select the fallout3.exe file, but in my Windows 8.1, that file is a 94Kb "security catalog", while the actual program application file is simply named fallout3, without the extension, a 14692Kb file. Are your instructions in this case still correct? Should I be selecting the tiny security file and not the application itself?

To test I just downloaded a fresh copy of the PDF and clicked the link to 4gb enabler, works fine for me

The correct file to modify is fallout3.exe which on my computer (8.1 windows) is shown as 14,692 KB application.

You may need to fiddle with windows explorer since by default it "supresses extensions for known file types".

You should update this guide with a view towards using Mod Organizer instead. Works way better than NMM. Third install of a modded game so I only browsed it but it seems like you covered most of the essentials, although you might want to put in a "cleaning your masters" step as that prevents most of the crashes people run into once the game has been made large adress aware.

You should try DC Moods. I think it's the best weather lighting mod for FO3.

I've been running it all week with ENB injector.
I get a much higher framerate than with Project Reality.

I'm not totally sold on the look, but I'm not 100% sure I set it up right either.

Could you share notes on how you installed it?

I don't use an ENB. So I simply install the main mod then the pitt and last point lookout. I use BUM to sort them. BOTTOM of weather/lighting category.

Also, I have some questions about texture optimizer. Should we use after we have installed all our mods because that's what I did.

Sure just don't do the "advanced" bsa section unless you follow it exactly.
I've thought several times of removing it because it might cause someone problems who makes a mistake in reading.

I put the note in to reinstall better maps and textures after running it because the optimtization happens to screw up that mod.

It's up to you whether it is worth the risk, I think the risk is small but others might disagree. Optimizer is probably only worth doing for those with slower systems.

The best weather lighting mod for FO3 is the Weather for ENB - URWLENB FO3 (http://www.moddb.com/mods/weather-for-enb-urwlenb-fo3) which unfortunately is not hosted on the nexus forums + plus it requires an ENB preset in order to appear properly on your screen(even the newer enb version .249 for FO3 with its generic enbseries.ini, etc files should work just fine -- just in case you don't want to use a custom enb preset due to performance reasons).
Not many people are aware of this mod so informing you about its existence is a good thing I guess.

The most common crash for windows 8 users of steam fallout 3 GOTY (and non-goty) is crashing when clicking play in the fallout launcher.
The fix? Updating windows live as shown in step 1.

Wow, I guess I just got lucky (or maybe it's not such a problem with Win7?). I had read on another forum that GFWL was going to removed from FO3, since I didn't have any trouble I thought that was the case with the Steam version: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1ucpqu/fallout_3_is_set_to_have_gfwl_removed_from_pc/?sort=new

"you are going to have to explain how to get mods that don't work with it (NMM) running."
It already does. Look at the mod tips for DarnUI and FWE, it offers precise NMM specific instructions. As far as I know I did this where necessary for every mod listed.

I was actually urging you to continue doing it ("always remember") and even expanding the details, rather than criticizing your efforts. I'm sorry that was unclear. I had thrown out Gopher as an example just because he goes to (what some folks might say)  extremes in his instructions, like telling folks HOW to select multiple files when moving them into another folder. I think your work on this guide and on the Updated Unofficial Patch is very well done and exceptionally newbie friendly. Having the Unofficial Patch as an exe is brilliant, no muss, no fuss, download and double click.

From my experience helping many on the steam forums -- A large percent of windows 8 users seem to need the windows live update, and a small percent of windows 7 users. I needed it myself on 8.
Perhaps there is another workaround, but the update quickly and easily fixes the problem.

Once you have successfully clicked play once to validate the game, you can disable or bypass GFWL.
They did remove the gfwl license key from the steam versions of the game, so you can't readily logon to the gfwl servers.
But you've never needed to do that to play fallout 3.
This confuses a lot of people who naturally think this means gfwl code has been removed completely from fallout 3 already. Nope.

I wrote the guide in a terribly concise style, which is good in some ways, but means excluding explanations of why things are done or how they work, etc...

Thanks for the effort and the work. I like the guide and particularly like the fact it is being kept up to date.  I got my new setup running using Gopher's videos and wish I had seen this as well since some of Gopher's stuff is out of date.

I would suggest you break the initial section into CD install and Steam install. All of that Windows Live stuff can be skipped if you do a Steam download of the GOTY edition (unless it's on a really old machine with remnants of a earlier setup, maybe worth a footnote in the Steam section). With the Steam download, I personally found that I just had to do the   bUseThreadedAI=1  to get the game running on Win 7 even though I'm just running a Core Duo.

As far as mod managers go, Nexus Mod Manger has to be your initial recommendation (Nexus is THE mod site and NMM is their choice) and like Gopher, you are going to have to explain how to get mods that don't work with it running. Always remember that you have to address it to folks who may know nothing about computers except plug and play and one click installs. Gopher does a good job with that and provides an example for anyone hoping to help others.

Yes, there are other mod mangers that are more powerful and provide additional tools, but NMM is the new standard (even though many of the older FO3 mods are designed for use with FOMM or for manual install). You can add a section at the end that addresses the fact that as folks get more into it they may want to go to try FOMM, Wry Bash or Mod Organizer. As a side note, I think the STEP project, even with all the thousand of hours of work put into perfecting Skyrim in an easy to understand fashion will never be very popular because it doesn't use NMM.

PC gaming has changed a lot since I first ran Wolfenstein back in 1992. For years serious gamers spent hours and hours tweaking not only their hardware, but also the operating systems and the code of their games. Those days are gone. If it ain't plug and play or at least easy to fix, it's back to the Xbox for a few more hours of GTA or Madden.

"Thanks for the effort and the work. I like the guide "

      Sure!

"I would suggest you break the initial section into CD install and Steam install."

There are only two sentences for the CD install. That doesn't merit another section.

"All of that Windows Live stuff can be skipped if you do a Steam download of the GOTY edition "

      Turns out that's completely wrong.
The most common crash for windows 8 users of steam fallout 3 GOTY (and non-goty) is crashing when clicking play in the fallout launcher.
The fix? Updating windows live as shown in step 1.
(You can disable or bypass windows live once you have validated the game by playing once, but not before)
I'm very active on the steam fallout 3 goty forum (this guide is permanently pinned at the top of it), and I can tell you this has saved many, many people from giving up on the game.
      "But I didn't need it!"
The flaw in most of the guides out there is that they show what worked for 1 person.

"As far as mod managers go, Nexus Mod Manger has to be your initial recommendation"

Previously, I listed FOMM & NMM and wrote "preferred" next to FOMM.As NMM improved I removed the word preferred and continue to list both. I have FOMM & NMM specific instructions where needed for every mod listed. NMM still barfs on the FWE installer, and lots of people have buggy installs right now as a result. (this guide would have saved them)

"you are going to have to explain how to get mods that don't work with it (NMM) running."

It already does. Look at the mod tips for DarnUI and FWE, it offers precise NMM specific instructions. As far as I know I did this where necessary for every mod listed.

I find your failure to not only recommend, but even mention, Wrye Flash http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/11336/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout3%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D11336%26preview%3D&pUp=1 perplexing and most vexing. Even if you don't personally use it don't you think it at least deserves discussion, so that newcomers understand the benefits of all the options?
Speaking for myself as a user of Wrye Flash I can't recommend Wrye Flash enough. I would never consider switching to anything else, though it can easily be used along side other mod managers without issue. Though I've never seen a need to rely on anything else, I've found Wrye Flash to be superior to all of the other options.

Go ahead and type up the entry for the guide right now as a response to this message.

Blackened doesn't support Wrye flash, and most every config that uses my guide will use Blackened.

So make sure to include in your entry how to use Blackened with Wrye flash.

Or alternatively update the Blackened patches for Wrye flash.

Thanks for your contribution to the guide and the Fallout 3 community!

      First on typing an entry.
This page http://wryemusings.com/Wrye%20Bash.html really says all that needs to be said on it, so any entry I would type would be redundant. My advice would be to include the link I put above in the next iteration of this guide. Also I thank you for your prompt response and openness to additions suggested by others, this can only bode well for the greater development of this guide.
Second though, a bit of confusion.
What do mean the Blackened patches can't be used with Wrye Flash? I myself have in the past used the MMM-EVE patch installed with Wrye Flash without encountering any problems. I don't know how you got the impression that they were incompatible, but that is flat out incorrect. There is absolutely nothing preventing the use of the Blackened patches with Wrye Flash.

I can't make sense of your response.

You had said my guide was a failure because it didn't have a wyreflash entry, so I said go ahead, write one.

But you didn't write one. You only provided a link with a huge amount of disparate information obviously not suitable for a concise guide.

Or are you suggesting I simply provide a link to wyre flash with no explanatory text?

      Get cracking bucko!

You won't be able to complain about the entry for wyre flash in the guide, because you are writing it.

As it now stands, I'm just putting a link since that is all you have provided.

Please rectify this failure, the community is depending on you! Thank you for volunteering.

p.s. please let me know when you are ready to start work on adding Wrye Flash tags to Blackened. This has been on the back burner for ages.

Hey now, I didn't say your guide was a failure. I'm not trying to attack you. When I complemented you on your openness to accepting suggestions I was being genuine. Your guide contains useful information. If I didn't think your guide had useful information I wouldn't have bothered asking. Your guide is not a failure. I just said that I didn't understand why you failed to mention Wrye Flash at all. It didn't make sense to me. If you believed users shouldn't use Wrye Flash, and thus had explained why, I could've understood that, regardless of whether I'd have agreed with it or not. But going off the guide one would think Wrye Flash didn't even exist. That is what I didn't understand.
If you believe Wrye Flash shouldn't be used fine. But you should at least explain that in the guide itself, so that users will understand then why they shouldn't use it. Rather than ignore the topic entirely, which can only lead to people who are aware of Wrye Flash wondering why.
I'll say it again. This guide contains useful information. I'm not trying to attack you. This guide is not a failure. I just didn't understand why you never mentioned Wrye Flash. If believe Wrye Flash shouldn't be used fine, but that should have been explained in the guide itself.
Regarding setting Bash tags for the Blackened patches. The method for setting tags for any esm or esp is the same. You can just select the mod you wish to change or add tags for. Then right click on the bash tags window in the bottom right of the Wrye Flash screen and click on any tags you wish to add or remove.
I don't know what the problem would be with any of the Blackened patches. Any tags they need can be easily added. If they don't need tags there is nothing forcing their addition. What am I missing here? Before my most recent change up of the mods I use, I used the MMM-EVE patch and didn't notice any problems. The only reason I'm not using it now is because I'm using a small guns centric character now, and thus decided not to use EVE for that character. If any of the Blackened patches are having problems from getting their changes overwritten they can always be put after the bashed patch in your load order. Or if you feel that a merged patch would work better than a bashed patch you can use that instead while still using Wrye Flash. Could you go into greater detail on what the problem is?
Regarding why I like Wrye Flash. One of the big reasons for me is for the ease of installing and uninstalling mods and controlling install order. For example, suppose I have two mods which both happen to have different textures for a specific item, controlling which textures get used is as simple as moving one mod below the other in the installers tab. And if I uninstall one of those mods, any textures, or meshes, or sounds it was overwriting automatically get added back to the game.
Regarding the other link not being useful. It does have a lot of information, but it is rather large I admit. When I first started using the Wrye mod managers, Bash Flash Smash and so on, I did find this pictorial guide helpful http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/35230/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Foblivion%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D35230%26preview%3D&pUp=1 . Because it is pictorial, it should be clearer than just a written guide. I myself often find pictures to be clearer than text when learning something, so I should have thought of it sooner. My bad.
If a written description is also desired from me, very well. I'll put it in my next post.

Look at the ultra-concise style of other entries in the guide, and see if you can write something that fits in well.

If you're willing to write a more detailed and lengthy instruction section I can instead devote an entire section to it.
(between the listing of mods and troubleshooting section perhaps)

If you're willing to add wrye flash tags to blackened that would help the community out.

Edit: That looks good, I'll probably have to add it as its own section. You need to add a one sentence intro explaining what benefit Wrye flash will provide vs alternatives.

An intro that explains the benefits of Wrye Flash, that is only one sentence is a bit challenging, but here goes.

"Wrye Flash is useful for controlling install order simply by dragging mods up and down the Installers tab, and when you uninstall a mod it automatically checks every other mod you have installed with Wrye Flash to see if they share files, and if they do, Wrye Bash will replace any files lost with the proper versions from the other mod, or the base game."

For an intro I don't know if that has much zing to it, but it does explain one of the benefits of Wrye Flash.

I tried to edit that slight typo, but it doesn't seem to have stuck. Here is the fixed version.

    How to install Wrye Flash.
    1- Install Python 2.7.2 http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.2/python-2.7.2.msi
    2- Install Wxpython http://sourceforge.net/projects/wxpython/files/wxPython/2.8.12.0/wxPython2.8-win32-ansi-2.8.12.0-py27.exe/download
    3- Install Pywin http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywin32/files/pywin32/Build216/pywin32-216.win32-py2.7.exe/download
    4- Install Comtypes http://sourceforge.net/projects/comtypes/files/comtypes/0.6.2/comtypes-0.6.2.win32.exe/download
5- Extract wrye Flash in your fallout folder (Wrye Flash can be found here http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/11336/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout3%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D11336%26preview%3D&pUp=1 )
    6- Enjoy
Credit for the ease and clarity of these installation instructions above is owed to Sergio1992 http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/users/1073477 . Really I just copied a post he did on the subject, there was no way I could improve on it. All kudos should go to him.

    Using Wrye Flash
After extracting Wrye Flash to your fallout folder go into the Mopy folder, find and double click on Wrye Bash Launcher. This will start Wrye Flash. You can also create a shortcut for it by right clicking on the launcher and then clicking on create shortcut.

A Bashed Patch may have been created for you. If it wasn't, go to the Templates folder within the Mopy folder, and copy the bashed patch you find there to your fallout data folder.

You should ensure that Wrye Flash is set to show your mods in their load order. To do so, when in your Mods tab, right click on File. Then go to Sort by, and you will see whether load order is selected, if not, select it.

To install mods with Wrye Flash click on the Installers tab. Then drag the desired mod to beneath where it says package, and drop it. It will then ask whether you wish to copy or move the mod, select either one.
If the mod file in question is organized so that it has ESMs, ESPs, BSAs, or any of the regular fallout data folder subdirectories, like Meshes for example, than you can then, after putting it in the installers tab, install it by right clicking on it, and then clicking on install.
If the mod in question is not set up in this manner you will need to reorganize it into a form Wrye Flash will recognize.

IMPORTANT NOTE- Always read each mod's read me and follow the read me's instructions before installing.

After having set up your load order using the tools advised in the rest of the "ULTIMATE Fallout 3 Setup and Mod Guide By- Benwah", or by following Gopher's https://www.youtube.com/user/GophersVids/featuredload order tutorial videos, you can set up a Bashed patch.
Right click on the bashed patch, and select rebuild patch, you may be asked if you want to auto deselect some mods which will then be merged into the Bashed patch, if so select yes.
You can then select which mods, if any, to merge. In addition, some mods have bash tags. You can see whether or not a mod has bash tags by selecting a mod, and looking in the lower right corner of the mods tab under where it says bash tags. After having selected rebuild patch, you will see various options such as "Import Graphics" and so on. If a mod has a bash tag for "Import Graphics" for example, you will see that mod listed if you select Import Graphics, then select that mod.
After making your selections, click on Build Patch.

This is intended as a brief and basic introduction. For a pictographic guide which goes into greater depth, I suggest downloading this http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/35230/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Foblivion%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D35230%26preview%3D&pUp=1

thank you so much for this guide !
I have struggled , without success , on many occasions to try and get mmm to work alongside fook 2 . with a little jiggery pokery I'm finally able to play a stable game with both as well as a whole bunch of other mods largely due to following the advice in your guide .
what I'd really like to learn is how to craft custom patches for specific load orders . if you ever feel like sharing your wisdom regarding that topic i'll consider having a gender reassignment so I can have your children !

Are you aware of the mod made by blove specifically for MMM+FOOK2?

      "MMMFOOK2 Compatibility Patches"

      http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/18269

The author just yesterday helped me in a big way, funny you just happen to ask now. post on that mods discussion if you're still stuck after using it.

The hard part of making compatibility patches is reviewing all the conflicts and deciding for each which mod should "win".Sometimes it's really obvious, sometimes it requires more thought (or testing).
In rare cases you need to preserve some aspects of both.If I combine FWE + EVE weapons, I need to preserve the damage values from FWE with the effects from EVE.
(This was much of the improvement made in blackened 2.0)

The easy part is dragging the winning record to a new compatibility patch esp (when it wouldn't have won anyway).
Look at miax's guide to fo3edit to learn more.

I'm no expert at making mods or using mod tools. I'm enthusiastic and want to help make mods more accessible, but most of what I have done has depended on help from more skilled people.

nope - wasn't aware of blove's work at all ! thanks for pointing me in that direction . dl'ing right now but , to be honest , my game is really solid right now so I'm gonna finish my playthrough before messing with the load order again !
as for being no expert , dude , that is totally a matter of perspective .
when you talk about deciding which mod should win in order to resolve conflicts , it's totally over my head at the moment . I can just about manage to put my mods into a usable load order ( with a little help from boss ! ) , test it's viability with fo3edit , fnvedit , tes5edit and make a merged patch .
I still have a lot to learn so , at least from my perspective , you are an expert !
anyhoo , thanks a million for sharing what you know . it's very much appreciated .
