With XCOM being an international paramilitary force I thought some things about the original soldier ranks a little odd. First, field officers don't lead squads and 2nd surely a nation wouldn't send rookies/squaddies as it's best troops to fight an alien invasion. I noticed the term operative being used a lot by the game to describe our soldiers. Special Forces soldiers in general are colloquially called operatives in the US; so I decided to make a ranking structure around that idea. Hope you like it.
First picture is dedicated to my dear friend; former Vietnam/Desert Storm vet and all around bad ass Gunnery Sergeant Randolph Parker. R.I.P Gunny.
Ranks
Operative I
Operative II
SPC (Specialist) Operative
Senior Operative
Chief Operative
Senior Chief OPR
Adjutant Chief OPR
Command Chief OPR
Instead of abbreviating the ranks I decided to use pay grades denoted by "X" similar to the US military "E" grades.
m_aRankAbbr[0]=X1
m_aRankAbbr[1]=X2
m_aRankAbbr[2]=X3
m_aRankAbbr[3]=X4
m_aRankAbbr[4]=X5
m_aRankAbbr[5]=X6
m_aRankAbbr[6]=X7
m_aRankAbbr[7]=X8
Psionics:
Since I used "operative" above I changed these to reflect an increasing mastery of the psionic power.
m_aPsiRankNames[0]=None
m_aPsiRankNames[1]=Neophyte
m_aPsiRankNames[2]=Initiate
m_aPsiRankNames[3]=Adept
m_aPsiRankNames[4]=Volunteer
m_aPsiRankAbbr[0]=None
m_aPsiRankAbbr[1]=Neo.
m_aPsiRankAbbr[2]=Init.
m_aPsiRankAbbr[3]=Adp.
m_aPsiRankAbbr[4]=Vol.
