nTex is a UI texture replacement mod, designed to bring a bit of colour and added clearness to XCOM. The files used in the creation of the mod have been released so you can make your own version easily.

Note: These are mods that I personally use and enjoy, there are lots of other great ones out there too!

nTex is designed to bring a different flavour to the standard XCOM interface. It replaces many of the icons and graphics present in vanilla with custom-made ones that were either drawn from scratch, use images extracted directly from the game, or taken from completely free clipart sites such as clker.com. The mod is compatible with pretty much any mod except those that use TexMod to change the same graphics files. Mods that conflict can be set to take priority over nTex simply by putting them above nTex in the TexMod load order.

Full installation instructions are included in the mod download.

Note for Long War users: Follow the instructions in the download for nTex after you have installed Long War and not before, otherwise Long War will fail to install correctly.

Users of non-English Versions
If you load up the mod using TexMod and find the game is now in English but want to use it in your native langauge, please follow the instructions in the post here. Thanks to vnsh for discovering how to do this!

Note on Anti-Virus Programs
TexMod works by "intercepting" calls to memory addresses and replacing the graphic that would normally come back with one included in the mod. This behaviour is sometimes used by viruses and most AV software will flag TexMod as some sort of risk. This has been happening as long as TexMod has been going, and I've been using the exact executable included in the mod for 6 years with no ill effects. If you are unsure in any way I take no offense if you wish to be cautious and not use the mod!

  • Class icons for both normal, genetically modified, and psionic soldiers.
  • Perk icons for the Assault, Heavy, Sniper, Support, MEC Trooper & Psionic classes, as well as all Gene Mods.
  • Icons for general abilities (Shoot, Hunker Down, Overwatch etc)
  • Utility buttons for Tactical screen (End Turn, Soldier Info etc)
  • Country flags for squad list and uniform patches.
  • New images for Officer Training School upgrades.
  • Redone ammo counters using in-game graphics.
  • Civilian counter images during terror missions.

  • Rank insignia.

  • EXALT weapon ammo counters are the same as XCOM ones. These weapons use the default image for their type and I can't change it using TexMod.
  • On the Abilities screen unattained rank insignia have the grey outline of the original images visible when promotions are available.
  • Target Info menu button in tactical screens is cyan instead of orange like the rest, this is a piece of weirdness by the designers and I can't change it.

  • 4.3 - Added new SHIV icons and barracks navigation icons.
  • 4.2 - Added new icons for High Ground and MEC Close Combat. Removed old medal texture test.
  • 4.1 - Added new icons for Battle Fatigue, Fallen Comrades, and EXALT Hack. Tweaked Heavy perk Grenadier and MEC skill Grenade Launcher to use in-game frag grenade icon instead of generic one. Tweaked colour of small textures Poisoned, Shredder Rocket, Holo-Targeting, Panic, Suppression, and Critical Hit to red instead of cyan in keeping with normal colour scheme.

Redone SHIV plasma ammo counter, tactical end-of-mission icons (and added MELD one), slight tweak to dense smoke icon, redone barracks recruit image, tweaked gene icon in gene lab, redone all OTS icons and added Lead By Example.

  • 2.23 - Minor update to fix Toolboks-installed section broken by XCOM patch released on 2/12/13.
