Description

Have you been baffled by creepy horror movie background "music" that replaces familiar and beautiful Alexei Zakharov tracks far too often? Does your game sound too much like a live Lustmord performance? Do you get a feeling that X4 tells you some Lovecraftian cosmic horrors have awakened and are lurking somewhere nearby? Here comes the ultimate remedy for this problem, a red pill if you want.

This mod patches "audioregion" IDs of "region_definitions.xml" to remove all "zoned sound" references connected to in-game sectors so the dark ambient music won't get triggered. Note that soundtrack mods can still playback these dark ambient tracks as normal sector music if the mod author wishes so. By the way the mod is compatible with any soundtrack mod including the absense of such... I would even go as far as to say it's compatible with ANY MOD as of now. Yeah.

I am sure that "region_definitions.xml" file is updated by Egosoft from time to time (at least when they add new in-game sectors) so I will make sure you can always get a freshly compatible X4NDA version for your mental health and immersion needs.

Don't forget to endorse this mod as I've spent initially at least two full days figuring out how to clean up this dark ambient mess (which FYI was far worse pre-X4 3.00 and came to be known as the "dark ambient bug" because the dark ambient music was looping endlessly after some time spent in the game) without much help from Egosoft or community. And of course report any undocumented problems if there are any.

Known issues

  • Sector music restarts with big delays. It's a music behaviour bug that is yet to be solved - the sector music restart parameter doesn't work like it should. If you're getting unbearable periods of silence you can trigger sector music by leaving your pilot chair->sitting back, going into travel mode, entering a highway, docking->undocking or changing sector. Let's pretend that movement is life and the eventual silence when you hang around the same place for a long time is a "feature" that illustrates this principle - a little philosophy or mental flexibility does the trick.

Setup guide

  • Extract "No_Dark_Ambient" folder from archive into [X4 root folder]\Extensions\.
  • Be warned that any other mod that alters "audioregion" IDs in "region_definitions.xml" (for now it seems they don't exist... yet?) or future game versions will likely require a compatibility update.
  • Make sure mod is enabled in extensions menu (usually it is by default).
  • Say goodbye to H.P. Lovecraft "music"!
