About this mod
Fixes a Wolf swords bug (base thru mastercrafted) where the scabbard floats above the sword when its mounted in certain Corvo Bianco weapon stand slots. Some other swords have this bug but it's been pointed out to me that applying this fix to them makes their scabbards not visible on any NPC that equips them. So fixed for Wolf swords only now.

Thanks to fendy83 & SorceressJ for pointing out to me that the versions that apply this mod to an NPC witcher's swords make that NPC witcher's scabbards not visible. So the Main Files in the Files tab has only a Wolf swords version now. The other versions have been moved to the Old Files section.
- The FixWolfFloatingScabbards version shouldn't affect any NPC's since none of them equip the Wolf swords.
- The FixWolfAndTeigrFloatingScabbards version makes Gaeten's scabbards not visible.
- The FixWolfTeigrVesemirFloatingScabbards makes the scabbards of Gaeten & Vesemir not visible.
- The FixWolfTeigrZireaelAndMoreFloatingScabbards makes the scabbards of Gaeten, Ciri, Vesemir, & all the other NPC witchers not visible.
- None of the versions affect Geralt's scabbards.
Any of the swords listed in the Original Description below that this fix isnt applied to can still be mounted to vertical sword stands & to one of the two slots in wall-hanging horizontal sword stands without having a visible floating scabbard (it's still there but floats inside the wall in these cases). Mounting them to the other slot in a wall-hanging horizontal sword stand or to any slot in a desktop horizontal sword stand will result in the floating scabbard being visible. See screenshots in the Images tab.
The NPC Witcher steel & silver swords look just like Geralt's starting swords & must be spawned in with the debug console so them remaining vanilla is not a big loss. Since Zireael & Teigr are not part of a pair of swords vertical sword stands work well for their vanilla versions. As far as I know Vesemir's swords can be obtained only thru the debug console. But if one has them their Corvo Bianco appearance would definitely benefit from this fix since they look good in a horizontal sword stand.
I'll note that the versions of this mod in the Old Files section can be installed once Corvo Bianco has been reached. Assuming the main game has been completed before then that gets around the issue of the affected NPC witcher's scabbards not being visible. But as SorceressJ pointed out thats an awkward solution.
Original Description
The following swords have a bug where the scabbard floats above the sword when it's mounted to a weapon stand.
- Wolf swords (base thru mastercrafted)
- Teigr
- Zireael Sword
- NPC Witcher Steel & Silver Swords
- NPC Vesemir Steel & Silver Swords
- NPC Witcher Silver Sword q403 upgrade
- NPC Vesemir Silver Sword q403 upgrade
This bug happens with both vertical and horizontal stands. On vertical stands the floating scabbard ends up inside the wall behind it. On wall-hanging horizontal stands the floating scabbard will be visible if the sword is mounted in one of the two sword slots but will be inside the wall behind it if the sword is mounted in the other sword slot. (See screenshots). On desktop horizontal sword stands the floating scabbard is always visible. This mod fixes that for some ot the swords listed above.
How this small fix is applied to Wolf swords
The grandmaster Wolf swords don't have this bug and comparing their definitions in dlc\bob\data\gameplay\items\def_item_crafting_weapons.xml to the other Wolf sword definitions in dlc\dlc10\data\gameplay\items\dlc10_wolf_swords.xml it can be seen that each grandmaster Wolf sword definition ends with
<player_override><bound_items>
scabbard_silver_wolf_01
</bound_items></player_override>
or
<player_override><bound_items>
scabbard_steel_wolf_01
</bound_items></player_override>
whereas each of the bugged Wolf sword definitions ends with
<bound_items>
scabbard_silver_wolf_01
</bound_items>
or
<bound_items>
scabbard_steel_wolf_01
</bound_items>
This mod changes each of the bugged Wolf sword definitions (base thru mastercrafted) in dlc\dlc10\data\gameplay\items\dlc10_wolf_swords.xml and in dlc\dlc10\data\gameplay\items_plus\dlc10_wolf_swords.xml to end like the grandmaster Wolf sword definitions.
How to install this mod (manually)
- Before installing this mod all base thru mastercrafted Wolf swords that are on sword stands need to be unmounted from those sword stands. If you are going to install a version that mods more swords any of them that are on sword stands must be removed as well. Make a save file. There shouldnt be any visible floating scabbards when you make this save file.
- Extract the folder 'modFixWolfFloatingScabbards' (or whatever the name is for the version you're installing) from the downloaded archive and drop it into the 'mods' folder of your Witcher 3 installation.
- Continue from the save file made in step 1
What may work if you have floating scabbards that remain after a sword is removed from a sword stand
After this mod is installed if a save is used that was made before the mod was installed and had any of the bugged swords mounted there will be a 'baked in' floating scabbard above each of those bugged swords. These may be visible or may be in the wall behind the sword stand. Each will remain even if the formerly bugged sword is removed from that sword stand. There's an example of such a 'baked in' visible floating scabbard in the screenshots. There's a 2nd screenshot of it which also shows the additional 2 'baked in' floating scabbards in the wall behind it.
The only way to avoid this is before installing the mod remove all the bugged swords from the sword stands, make a save, install the mod, then continue with the save you just made.
I have some saves with 'baked in' visible floating scabbards. One of them has 1 visible and 5 in-wall floating scabbards. I was able to get rid of them as described below (there's no real need to remove the ones that arent visible). Also I dont have any custom scabbard or scabbard changing mods. If you do it wouldnt surprise me if this doesnt work.
- Make a new save, then you dont have to worry about buggering your current save
- Uninstall this mod
- Load the new save from Step 1
- For each floating scabbard you need to remove, put the bugged sword that caused the floating scabbard back in that sword stand.
- Now take this bugged sword back out of that sword stand. For me this also removed its floating scabbard. If you dont remember which of the bugged swords caused a floating scabbard there will need to be some trial and error in steps 4 & 5. You'll have to keep trying with different bugged swords. The Wolf swords have 4 silver & 4 steel bugged versions - base, enhanced, superior, & mastercrafted. The grandmaster Wolf swords arent bugged. There's also the Teigr sword. Keep trying until you find the one that removes the floating scabbard. If you no longer have the bugged sword that caused the floating scabbard you'll need to recraft it or spawn it in with the debug console. If none of the bugged swords remove the floating scabbard then this method doesnt work for you.
- If this works for you then after you've removed your floating scabbards make sure none of the bugged swords are mounted to any sword stands and make another new save. You want no visible floating scabbards when you make this save.
- Reinstall the mod and use the new save made in Step 6. For me the floating scabbards were still gone and I could continue on this save.
Potential Conflicts with other mods
The version that mods only the Wolf swords will conflict with any mod that changes any of the files
- dlc\dlc10\data\gameplay\items\dlc10_wolf_swords.xml
- dlc\dlc10\data\gameplay\items_plus\dlc10_wolf_swords.xml
The version that also mods the Teigr sword must add the following to this list
- dlc\dlc15\data\gameplay\items\def_item_dlc15_weapons.xml
- dlc\dlc15\data\gameplay\items_plus\def_item_dlc15_weapons.xml
Any version that mods any of the other swords must add the following to the list
- gameplay/items/def_item_weapons_secondary.xml
- gameplay/items_plus/def_item_weapons_secondary.xml
There's no restrictions on this mod & it may be able to be added into a conflicting mod per the details section above
