About this mod

Silences most music so it only plays during things like: story specific moments/areas, minigames, taverns and witcher contract boss fights for a more minimalistic approach to use of music.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
A more minimalist approach to music where it's used sparingly, letting the natural environment stand out.

Music will only play when:

1. It's a part of the game environment.
(ie: bands, taverns, etc.)

2. Minigames.
(Gwent, horse races, etc.)

3. Most Witcher Contract boss fights.

4. Story specific
(events, cinematics, certain dialogue, certain areas like Deadwight Wood and Heatherton, etc.) **

** Dialogue and story battles will only have music if it's a special story track for that scenario/area.
If they use generic ambient/combat tracks no music will play.

The way this mod works is similar to the way the Half-Life or Dark Souls series handles music usage.

Over 140 tracks have been changed.

Q&A:

"why not just turn the music volume off?"
Then you would disable the band/tavern, minigame, boss fight, special area and story music

"won't this disable tavern/band music as well?"
No, this replaces the actual music tracks with silence instead of using a script edit, that way you can still retain tavern music and other such things. A script edit is only used for disabling generic combat music.

"why is a script used for combat music and not file replacement?"
You wouldn't be able to keep most boss fight or story combat music if file replacement is used. A lot is shared and silencing one would silence it for all the other instances that certain song is used in.

"I'm getting a compilation error on startup"
You have a mod conflict. Use Script Merger to find out what it is

"my game won't load"
You've reached the mod limit, use Mod limit fix.

Compatibility:
Spoiler:
Show

1. Will override (or be overridden) by mods like:  Familiar Music Replacement or  MOP**
**
A combined version can be made, but can have a few immersion breaking issues. See "special version" section further below for more info.

2. ( this does not apply to "KeepGenericCombatMusic" version) Incompatible with anything that modifies the sound.ws script. So use Script Merger
to check for conflicts. I have made a compatibility patch for Witcher 3 Enhanced Edition, since merging is not recommended with it.

Disclaimer: DO NOT use Vortex to install, as it doesn't install sound.cache mods properly

********************************************************************************
Default Version / Keep Combat Music Version
********************************************************************************

Extract 'modMinimalisticMusic' to your mods directory

*Keep Combat Music Version does not remove the standard combat music, other than that it has all the default features. It's also script free, so
compatibility is not needed.

********************************************************************************
 W3EE Compatibility Version
********************************************************************************

*Only for people using The Witcher 3 Enhanced Edition. You MUST use this variant if you want all features. DO NOT use Default Version*

Step 1
Extract 'modMinimalisticMusicW3EE' to your mods directory.

Step 2 IMPORTANT
Set modMinimalisticMusicW3EE's priority higher than 'modW3EEMain' with mod.settings or TW3 Mod Manager.

Step 3 IMPORTANT
After the mod compiles and the game starts after installation or updating, exit the game and restart
it to keep bugs from happening.

----------------------------------------------

As always, run Script Merger to check for any conflicts after installation.

ONLY USE ONE VERSION AT A TIME

'Special' version using Familiar Music Replacement (or MOP)**:

**Warning
There is one issue I've discovered using this with FMR. Minor Spoilers:
During the wedding from Hearts of Stone DLC, for some reason no music will
play when Vlodomir/Geralt and Shani dance. The band is silent. No idea
what causes this, but it doesn't happen when my mod is used by itself.
This opens up the notion that more instances like this could be affected, so use at your own risk.

This was mentioned in the 'compatibility' section briefly, here's a better rundown:
///

step 1:
[/b]After downloading and installing MinimalisticMusic, download and install Familiar Music Replacement

step2
Using the mod.settings or TW3 Mod Manager, set FMR's priority higher than MinimalisticMusic

conclusion:

Now you have a custom 'light' version. FMR only replaces a handful of songs, so you will still get those while having the rest silenced by my mod.
See FMR's description to see what music will play.

This can be done with MOP as well (same steps, just use MOP instead of FMR). Since MOP replaces 30
songs, it will obviously be less 'minimalist' though, but by all means you can do it if you want.
There will still be a lower use of music than vanilla.
Be sure to check MOP's description to see what will change.

This mod still works but is no longer supported. If any modder would like to take over and continue future support (like
fixing a few bugs) go right ahead, but make sure to credit me as the
original creator.

Known Issues:

Spoiler:
Show

- Sometimes when you reload a combat auto checkpoint (the one with a picture of a bloody wolf medallion) the story combat music will not be playing, this will happen when the combat music trigger is initiated before the fight starts. If that ever bothers you, reload a manual save before the fight. (or just don't die, scrub) **This doesn't apply to the KeepGenericCombatMusic version

- In Crow's Perch (and nearby area), Gwent Music will cut in abruptly instead of fading in. This seems to be the only place where it happens that I've seen so far.

- If you go into a lower level of a tavern like a basement, sometimes the tavern music  will fade out and be silent when you go back to the main level. This seems to be and an engine quirk and there's not much I can do about it. Just leave the tavern and come back in to fix.

- Skellige exploration music can still be present

- Vesemir's funeral music can not play.

The one highlighted in bold are ones that need fixing but I no longer have time to support this mod. If any modder would like to, be my guest, but credit me as the original creator.
