  I apologize in advance for the necessarily incomplete account of a forgotten practice given below.
  
  The claim that modding had real-life consequences can be traced back reliably all the way until at least Aristotle (1), but was not fully developed until the early French enlightenment (2). The early enlightenment theorists have been most influential in shaping the debate to come for the next centuries and has taken a direct influence on French Marxist and post-structuralist thought in the second half of the 20th century.
