About this mod
Adds a slider that edits secret TextureMipBias option introduced in patch 1.04 on the fly. No need to edit .ini files and restart the game anymore.
- Permissions and credits
By default, this setting is way too high and introduces "Texture Shimmering". Basically, it makes textures look like they are moving when they shouldn't be. This mod allows you to lower that shimmering effect on the fly, without having to ever exit the game.
As an added bonus, you could gain up to 5 FPS on higher resolutions just by lowering it from default.
v1.04 introduces TextureMipBias, a new [Rendering] setting that is tied to Texture Quality. Mipmaps are lower-resolution versions of textures that are utilized to increase performance and minimize VRAM use. In the case of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, mipmaps are aggressively used for the innumerable layers of foliage that can be seen for miles, and for just about every other texture in the game. This improves performance and keeps VRAM requirements down, but results in some lower-quality foliage and surfaces in the immediate vicinity of Geralt.
Installation
Unzip to:
GOG Version: \The Witcher 3\bin\config\r4game\user_config_matrix\pc\
Steam Version: \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\bin\config\r4game\user_config_matrix\pc\
Usage
You should now have a new slider under Options > Video > Graphics that says "Sharpening" under the Texture setting.
Use the linked guide above for info about which value is best.
Note: This is not related at all to the Sharpening filter on the Post Processing options screen.
Low sets it to 0 which was the default until patch 1.04.
Ultra sets it to -2 which should only be used for 2k+ resolutions
Uninstallation
Overwrite with the rendering.xml in the included backup folder
Known Issues
Much like editing this manually, the texture slider will continue to look like its in the low position - its not actually set to low.
The Sharpening slider will do the same and look like its set to low even if you set it to high. This does not affect the ingame effect.
What does this mean for future modders?
This means that every setting in every .ini file can have a slider added to it for changing any setting you want on the fly (think hairworks MSAA or grass density values) without ever leaving the game or using third party programs.
