3rd Xbox revealed on 21 May, possible Octover/November launch

  • Comment
Microsoft spokesman Larry Hryb has announced that the third generation Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be unveiled on 21 May.

On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com. If you are in the US or Canada, you can also watch the broadcast on Spike TV.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.

Kotaku and IGN have previously reported that sources say that Durango is scheduled for a release in October/November of this year.

What does this mean for Fallout (and future Elderscrolls games)? It's practically confirmation that Fallout 4, which is likely to be the game that Bethesda Game Studios has switched to working on is being developed for the new Xbox and Playstation 4 (announced earlier this year). According to Kotaku's sources the new Xbox is intended to be 6 times more powerful than the current Xbox 360. Fallout 4 and the next Elderscrolls game should receive graphical improvements on top of what has already been seen from Skyrim.

As Microsoft plans to demonstrate a line up of new games developed for the new Xbox at the E3 Entertainment expo it's possible that Fallout 4 could be announced as early as June this year, although this is far from certain.

I guess I'm one of the few people who always has an internet connection, I have my PC always on, connected to Steam, Origin, and Desura. I have my 360 always on and connected, I can't play without a connection. If I want to be competitive, I'll play online on my Xbox. If I don't want to be competitive, I'll just get the game on the PC so I can take the game's art in it's fullest extent. I'm going to get the new Xbox, as I already have a PC, because for Elder Scrolls and Fallout I like to play the vanilla way and modded to full extent. I don't like playing the default game on my PC so I own FO3, NV and Skyrim on both PC and Xbox.

There will be another Elder Scrolls and another Fallout in the far future, but not for a few years after Skyrim and FO4.

Keep in mind my PC buddies that if people stop buying consoles and everyone switches over to PCs then all the tricks that the console companies are doing now will simply be done to us in the future. Think about that for a moment... Not to mention that as soon as they find their fan base falling in love with modding they'll likely try and extend their tendrils into the modding communities, and while this means they may actually hire and pay modders for their exquisite work, they may also start charging people to use or post on mod sites, and level fines on those who create their own sites without permissions. So let the console players have their new shiny machine, let the companies offer the quality games as a token to the PC community for us to make better, I feel it is better than the alternative.

TES VI and FO 4 will be developed primarily for PS4 and the new Xbox.

A sad thing indeed, they need to develop them for PC primarily, they would be better for everyone if they did. High quality products overall, it has been proven before. Develop for PC first, scale down for consoles, everyone wins.

This is going to pose a problem. Mainly to places like rural Alaska where Steam has trouble actually getting connected let alone getting updates. It took me nearly 1 week to update FONV with all DLC off Steam.

I learned form a friend that you have to have an internet connection in order to play the games on the new Xbox, on of his friends works for Microsoft, This would be preventing Pirating and stuff like that, but not everyone plays xbox and has internet connection, I lived with my dad and never had internet, plus also they're going to be billing us for our subscriptions for our accounts in order to play so how much do you really wanna buy this i mean seriously its just a cheap way to steal your money in a legal way. and eventually people will become so desperate to stop the unfairness of only playing games with internet that they will obviously just create pirated versions and things like that.

Piracy is everywhere and cannot be stopped, it sucks for most of us but its justice for something more criminal like Microsoft, I heard stories that Microsoft gives most of its money to charity and I find that to be complete bullshit lol, but if its true its just like robin hood, but instead of stealing from the king and lords he's the rich lord stealing from the poor to give to the poor. It's Not economically functional but its not pleasing to have money sucked away each month to play a game you already paid $50+ dollars for.

Not only that, but it's been proven more than once than this sort of draconian DRM does nothing but acute the problem. The more DRM, the more piracy we get and the more honest customers have to sacrifice.

The always on nonsense has precisely bupkiss to do with piracy. What it's there to prevent is used game sales. Microsoft makes a commission on every game disc sold new. But they make absolutely nothing on used copies. So they're using the always-on crap to justify making each disc effectively only useful for one owner, which means they collect more in licensing fees. It's greed pure and simple. They don't care if that, long term, reduces sales...which it will do...they don't care if it locks budget minded gamers like myself out of even trying the console....which it will, since budget minded gamers like myself can't afford to spend more than $30 or so on a new game...they only care that it will short term boost profits, which makes the shareholders happy.

It's stupid. Gamers have every right to sell and buy used games, no different than cars or toasters, and if Ford or GE tried this same sort of crap they'd be strung up and crucified. But nooo, the media corps get away with it, even get defended for it by some particularly dumb whiteknights that seem to think it's right that they get ripped off. Sigh.

      *sigh*

      Xbox 72034...whatever, will have a online requirement, but probably not iron-clad mandatory, as it would alienate a not-so insignificant portion of their user base;

while piracy is a thing for consoles, the difficulty of doing it on consoles keeps it at a niche level; the actual prevailing theory is that it's to fight the "menace" of second-hand sales (trade-ins, used games, and rentals) as publishers (and developers to a lesser extent
[depending on the contract]) don't see a dime from them, but once again doesn't make much sense as it would anger a SIGNIFICANT portion of their consumer base as well as piss off Game Stop (one of the largest retail outlets for games, both used and new)

while Bill Gates is a ruthless business man, he did also donate a significant portion of his fortune to charity and he and his wife started their own charity foundation, take from that what you will

If you consider lawyers to be charity, considering the amount of money M$ spends on lawsuits alone every year. Besides, it's Bill Gates who donates a lot of money to charity out of his personal ridiculous amount of money, not M$ itself.

@Dukoth: While it does alienate a LARGE part of the customer base, myself included, they simply do not care. Online passes on PC games are an attempt at the same exact thing, as is most PC game DRM. That's why so many games are tied to an account these days, to keep you from selling it by rendering the key useless to anyone who cannot log into your account.

It's annoying as hell for me since I am one of those budget gamers that simply cannot justify $60+ for a game that barely lasts two evenings. Very rarely can I justify even half that on a new game. Fallout 4 is probably the only game coming out in the next four years that I would pay full price for, and even then I couldn't muster sixty for it. Used games are how I manage to get new things to play, and if I can't use used games on a given platform, and there's no bonkers Steam sales, I simply will not play that platform. I can't afford it, I don't have the necessary disposable income to shrug off buying the next EA product at full price.

So far I've read about always on connection to play and digital distribution only. Then we have micro transactions, and Steam and other like minded services. I don't hate Steam, it works nice but it's not without hassles. Many were orignally DRM to kill piracy or at least delay it but now there's an opportunity to kill the used game market.

In addition dumbed down games and creative bankruptcy (MW3 and BF3 are basically FPS clones). Constant reboots and overuse of QTEs. Games are getting to the point of monkey see button, monkey push button. Crappy ports to pc because console is god now. (I see a day when pc games will be no more because consoles will be advanced enough and the large mass of players will have neither the time, interest or tech savvy to bother with pc)

Here's another one I've read about. You don't really own the game, as in a license to have and keep a copy. Instead you pay a fee to license the right to play over time, that on top of maybe paying a fee for connection to the company server. Example, you want to play Fallout X, you pay $0.99 or whatever a month to play it . A couple of years pass, you tire of the game so you stop paying and the license is revoked. A pay to play system like renting. (It wouldn't surprise me if they might start charging by the hour in years to come.) A strategy to prevent burning a copy to DVD is to have certain random parts held back that are downloaded only for play. Turn the game off these or other parts are wiped each time. (also makes a good anti piracy measure BTW)

Why will this happen. To paraphrase another member - Gamers only have themselves to blame, while idiots continue to hand over their money for crap, game publishers will continue to throw crap at them.

Or to quote from the movie Scarface "Never underestimate the other guy's greed."

Really guys? Cut the crap here, these are all RUMORS that have been flying around forever, stop beating a dead horse. You have no clue if it's true or not. I'm glad people have sent Microsoft the message that such a system will cost them, but now it's just pointless, the console is set in stone and whatever choice they made has been made. Also, even it's true, this is basically just Steam for consoles, it's nothing new at all... though I am all for fighting it.

It's not just steam for consoles but for someone like Bill gates he wont be that stupid to not have to create a subscription plan to play the game, you already have to pay to play on Xbox live, so why not create something that if you want to continually play without having to keep buying cards, why not just create a subscribed account instead?! Bill gates is smart, and smart men are deceptive and powerful but eventually become greedy and no one likes them anymore, I Don't like bill gates mostly because he stole the Windows idea from Apple, and that's why apple is trying to beat Microsoft's software...

Steam Doesn't have a Subscription account, but You wanna know something? Steam was cracked months after it was released, and is still being updated with more pirated games, they have a tutorial on how to get it and everything... so just imagine, the first console every to be cracked and pirated, heck I've seen computers running Xbox games before with this weird ISO running program. The more Microsoft makes Their products more connected to the web and internet the more susceptible it is to becoming pirated and copied, so then people can download the cracked console data and install it onto their console with a private server and everything.

Exactly the best defence against Piracy is simply to accept it rather than encourage it, that and make Hardware/Software WORTH buying.

Dude, I hope you know that Bill Gates has nothing to do with the development of the xbox other than owning microsoft. And also, you think he's evil just because he's smarter than you?! How stupid are you? Thats a legitamite question. And as for the always on thing, that rumor is long gone, probably not going to happen. From what I've heard recently, the game developer will have the option of requiring an internet connection, its not for everything. Which makes perfect sense. Additionally, always online DOES NOT mean that used games will not work, it could be so the console can update without it interfering with anything, it could mean getting rid of those annoying updates that disconnect you every time you put in a game you havent played in a while, it could be so developers can make bug fixes faster and easier. And even if it is to ban used games, so what? people work hard to make these games, do they not deserve fair compensation? This isnt about greedy publishers, this is about developers who have to make a living by creating these games FOR YOU. For example Dead Space 2, (it might be 3), sold about 1 million copies, but the total unique users on their servers were 3 million only a few months after the game came out. They only recieved compensation for 1/3 of the sales of the game that they put their blood sweat and tears into. So you're wrong, in every way. Lastly, Microsoft stole nothing from apple, Windows sells better because its cheaper and more user friendly, while the apple os has about the same capabilities as windows but is definitely not user friendly. If apple wanted to catch up with microsoft in that regard, they just need to make their computers cheaper and easier to use. Apples are like the ps3 in this regard, the may run a tiny bit better, but developers hate working with and making stuff for them. So again, you are wrong, entirely. I hope I refuted all of your bs claims and if I missed any please let me know so I can continue to prove you wrong.

"And even if it is to ban used games, so what? people work hard to make these games, do they not deserve fair compensation?"

We buy used items all the time. As mentioned some have limited budgets. We can buy used dvds, appliances, cars, furniture, books, clothes etc., so why not games. By that logic all the people working in those industries are losing out making new items because of the used market, don't they deserve fair compensation? Yet for these things it's a non issue.

Movies make most of there money while in theaters anyway. Most people don't buy used appliances, so it doesnt cause that much trouble. Cars sell at a large enough profit that the concept of many people buying used cars doesnt hurt them too badly. Nobody buys used clothing, they just get hand-me downs, but again, it costs practically nothing to make clothing compared to what they are sold for. Books dont get bought used, thats what libraries are for. So nobody buys used books, they just rent them. Games are not sold at a significant profit. What they cost is about as cheap as they can get to cover the cost to make them. Its perfectly fine to have things like gamefly, where you are just borrowing the ggame and never actually own it, but its a different story when you buy something and pay money for it, without it going to the person deserving it. And if it wasn't for the used games market, the price of games would probably go down. The reason they are so high right now is because most people buy them used, so the publishers have to make up for it by charging more. So nice try.

they are powerful though, they are made to handle the high end graphics, but a computer is an all-in-one im my book, its got its own tv, plus we can hook and real 50" HD tv to a pc, and we can do a hell of alot more with a pc, the only bad thing about everyone using pc's and not consoles and tv's, is that you would need to take turns, for tv shows and other use's just like a tv...so i don't even know what to say......make powerful pc's cheaper!!!, with the option to control one screen for its own use with a remote, as if it was a tv not hooked to the pc, then again that would need to be a powerful pc to run tv and games at the same time, and in different rooms of the same house, something like that, all to gather, would cost maybe 1500 - 2000 dollhairs

I am not sure I agree. You're going to be able to get much more out of your $400 console than you will out of a $400 gaming PC. The new Xbox is supposed to have a sweet GPU and those are pretty spendy. The new console will probably smoke my rig and I spent a lot of chickens on it. Also, there are plenty of people who don't want the hassle of administrating a computer, aren't tech savvy, or don't have the resources to dedicate a box to their kids so the kiddos can play COD while mum hangs out on Facebook. I have an Xbox 360 and a nice PC and I will still buy the new box for my daughter.
