WILDLING is a prequel expansion mod for Valheim, where you get to play as a pre-teen version of your Viking self.

As a child you are considerably weaker and cannot make or use most items available to you as a grown up. But you have your own build tree, and your youthful size and agility can be an advantage. And you are not quite an ordinary child as you gain the Wildling skill, and perhaps a whole new and important destiny. This new skill reflects enhanced animal instincts and other abilities gained from living close to nature. But a wildling child is also smart in more human ways.

Progression through your adventure is more quest-like than regular Valheim and you should not expect to play in quite the same way or do similar things, like taking down bosses (on your own). There is an adventure and story here that unfolds over the whole map, although it primarily extends your time in the Meadows and Dark Forest.

Gameplay:

This mod starts by talking to Munin at the Temple, where you first arrive to Valheim.
Although optional, it is highly recommended that you play with a new character and world.

The Tenth World is a particularly brutal place for a child and survival more often involves avoiding fights. Apart from being easily killed, your biggest challenge is likely to be your reduced inventory size. Several things help with this later on, but basically you are a kid and can't carry that much. Get used to traveling light and making cache camps.*

The way to progress may not always be obvious but hopefully there are enough clues in-game, or inevitably posted on-line. At points you may be given quest objectives that you cannot get to directly, and are most likely not ready for. It may be best to put them aside for later. Wildling is as much about character development and exploration as regular Valheim, not to mention building and all the silly stuff. Wildling also features lesser role-play activities, strategies and secondary achievements.

There are a few ways to exit your wildling adventure and become grown up again. In this event you will permanently lose all of your wildling skills and abilities, but will recover any lost skills and keep all trophies and collectables, etc. In particular, there are six special "quest items" for you to collect as the main rewards from your adventure. Or you may continue to play on as a wildling and become powerful enough for any biome (?), especially in a team support role. Non-wilding characters (grown ups) cannot make or repair Wildling artifacts but can use the majority of them, some less effectively. Some of the content is designed for alternative (and easier) co-op play. At other points it is better for grown ups to just stay out of your way!

The rest is left for you to figure out, but the few videos provides a preview of the content.
Enjoy.

*As of v1.1.0 your inventory size is restored to 24 slots after your next uninterrupted sleep. The first quest item you should find (anticipated) grants you more space and carry bonus.

Installation (Manual):
Requires BepInEx.
Download, unzip and copy the "Wildling" folder to your BepInEx/plugins folder.

Technical Notes and Disclaimers:

This is a content mod that has a lot of code to support the wildling role. Regular (grown up) game play is not changed beyond additional shared world content (new dungeons, items, creatures, etc.). To complete the entire Wildling content may take 20+ hours but you are not required to find any quest items for a "successful conclusion". The quest items are mid-level power (level 4-5) and designed to be fun rather than OP game killers. Most other items are weakish (level 1-3) for the most part.

Like other mods, you can only take Wildling items and character to servers running with the Wildling mod. You can complete your quests on any world but there is only one quest state per world. Hence two wildling players would have to compete for, if not share, a quest and its rewards on the same world. Or they might complete the quest on other worlds and import items. Unfortunately, many similar such scenarios have yet to be tested, if even considered. There is no disadvantage to starting wildling with a existing character and/or world. But since this is large mod, best not to risk anything you might care about losing.

This mod should work with most other (small) mods but it is generally recommended that you play with few, if any, initially to avoid game-play conflicts. This is a beta release and I intend to address reported issues. All content is tested for single player and largely for companion play. However, extended long-term play, especially multiplayer, may produce issues not encountered yet. Similarly, updates to the Valheim source code is likely to continue breaking things in future.

This version is content complete but there are a few things... It is built on a "Hearth and Home" snapshot of the models and long-term support requires a full update to Mistlands and beyond. Language localization is not currently supported and would take some effort to implement. Feedback is greatly appreciated and I hope to continue to improve Wildling with time and support.

Acknowledgements:

This mod and all of its features were entirely inspired by my son, PortalDrifter, who wanted to play co-op Valheim as (in-game) father and son. His inspiration came from the fun we had playing "Child of Light" together (on PS3). Any similarity to other games and mods is entirely coincidental, all content being driven by the Wildling story and original concepts. Various in-game pop-culture references are entirely deliberate. My son was also my alpha play tester and I must also thank RedIron for some early pre-beta feedback. I would also like to thank several mod authors and MeatwareMonster (aka DickDamage) for his videos (etc.) that got me started Valheim modding in the first place. And a shout out to Ozzy and Richard for rescuing my PC after a home electrics fault.
