omg! I was literally just thinking yesterday, "would be cool to be able to challenge other vikings to hnefatafl or chess," and now I found this! You're amazing.

i like the idea... but its on a browser.... it would be more impressive if it on the game window instead.

There's a mod out there called  "Valheim Journal", it sjust a simple mod allow users to open a text window inside the valheim game with tranparency background. Maybe if u can incorporate that with this chess.

I was actually talking to a couple other devs about that yesterday! I'd like to get that working, but to use the interface I went with it includes getting a web view in game and I haven't quite figured it out yet. Hopefully soon! I'll look up the other mod, but I don't think I want to build a whole chess game using the unity UI.

Reading this page all I can think is auction house, job system, centralized currency, cross-server systems.

YES! That's definitely my larger vision. I've talked to a couple people in the community, I wanted to get the initial code out there and then maybe collaborate on some bigger projects. But hopefully more coming!

I'll endorse this mod for the Vi-King's Gambit alone. Are you aware of the actual Viking Lewis chessmen (on display in the London National Museum)? The figures do look somewhat similar to the Ward mesh ingame. It would be insane to port their models into the game... But hey.

No, I had no idea! I just went for the pun. The do kind of look like the wards, I don't know modelling very well yet, but that could be fun to play with.

Just browsing new mods and thought it was curious/unique enough to merit reading about it...
That said, I thought I'd pass along something to consider as a solution for a stuck-game scenario where one or the other has to chose death (pressing P): If it's possible, perhaps P can trigger a request, where if the other party agrees, there is no death for either person? In other words, requesting a Truce.

For that matter, if you wanted to continue with trope/meme, you could change P, to CTRL+K? (even more unlikely to get triggered in an 'accidental' keypress as P would)
That would then open up the option to use CTRL+T, to toggle the "Truce".

Or depending on how the chess game is setup, and whether there's any sort of chat, or ability to add elements to the page... you could add the Truce option there with a "reason" box for the person to type in a short comment. ie "My game has glitched."
Thereby signaling to your Mod that both parties have "Won" and no one dies.
(If Gold Coins in Valheim were weightless and a non-inventory item that was tracked as just part of our character, then I'd say you could use that as a means of offsetting things in another way, where a forfeiture of some amount of gold is given by the person requesting the truce. heh)

Anyways, good luck on the mod!

Ah that's an excellent idea! It makes sense that people should be able to offer a draw. My biggest concern with that approach is that in testing, a lot of the times the game got stuck were because the connection failed to establish or something went wrong with the server. I put a good bit of logic in place to mitigate that, but in those cases you would not be able to offer a truce because the other player would not be able to receive the offer. However, maybe I could actually handle all of that through the game instead of the chess server...that seems worth investigating. As for the gold, I'd eventually like to make the server better handle users and state, maybe even to the degree of tracking something like points or currency on the server. If I got that working, it would open the door to external economies or even something like an elo system.

You've given me a lot to think about and investigate, really appreciate you taking the time!
