Back in 2021, the idea behind this effort was how having a static portrait for the player character sucked, while NPCs had their equipment reflected in-game. I hoped that eventually there was a method in-game to allow the game to automatically switch portraits when your armor changed, but that particular feature was never added into the game. This mod is meant to alleviate that particular issue. It adds custom portraits for:

  • Chemical Assault Unit
  • Tungsten (7 variants)
  • Ti-Chrome (2 variants)
  • Tactical Vest
  • Super Steel (4 variants)
  • Steel
  • Starter
  • Siphoner
  • Shirt
  • Slick
  • Hazard Suit
  • Rathound Regalia
  • Core Elite
  • Phantom Dancer (3 variants)
  • Death's Grin
  • Overcoat (9 variants)
  • Hood+Googles
  • Greater Siphoner Armor (2 variants)
  • Leper Armor
  • JKK Armor
  • Industrial Powered Exoskeleton
  • Doctor Coat
  • Coretech Armor (2 variants)
  • Blast Suit
  • Bison Leather (2 variants)

To use any of these portraits in your game, first copy them to your Custom Portraits folder, which should be located at:
Documents\My Games\Underrail\CustomPortraits\
Once that is done, all the custom portraits should be available for new male and female characters. Please remember to restart the game if you're not seeing your custom portraits while in character creation.

  • If want to use any of these portraits to replace the current custom portrait of an existing character, simply copy the x_l.png and x_s.png equivalent pair you had previously used and rename the filename of your chosen replacements, restart Underrail and you should be seeing your new portraits in-game. For example, in my case I had initially used male33_l.png and male33_s.png for my character, so whenever I changed into an armor I planned using for a while, I simply renamed the corresponding files to match the avatar appearance change.

*Note that these all are transparent portraits, which will have dynamic backgrounds in-game.

Still to do: Replace the Chemical Assault Unit portraits with my version. The ones in-game look...iffy.
