BOOSTS PERFORMANCE THE RIGHT WAY - USING ONLY THE SETTINGS RECOMMENDED BY THE GAME ENGINE DEVELOPERS!

Please read, as the description has changed.

So, if you want to modify The Outer Worlds to make it play on a slow computer, you should do it right! Right? This mod lets you boost the game's performance correctly, using only the configuration endorsed by the developers of the Unreal Engine 4, which is the engine that powers the game. WOW (Wonderfully Optimized Worlds) Maximum Performance Boosts is a mod that's:

Easy to Set Up: A convenient batch file and simple-to-follow ReadMe instructions make installing the mod easier than a spacer's choice! Simply unzip and double-click to replace one of the game's .ini files.
  • Safe to Use: The mod adds a backup of the .ini file so you can safely revert to the game's original performance settings by simply renaming the file, as explained in the ReadMe instructions.
  • Effective: Since the mod uses only the settings recommended by the Unreal Engine 4 developers, it's simply the best way to boost performance as the experts advise. I mean, if your computer can't run the game with this mod, it simply can't run the game!
  • Verifiable: All of the settings in the .ini file of the mod can be verified as accurate by visiting this webpage of the Unreal Engine 4 website:
        UE4 Scalability Reference

PLEASE NOTE

(1) INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS HAVE CHANGED. Please do not use the "install as administrator" option, as some anti-virus software prevents batch files from running with elevated privileges. Instead, simply double-click the batch file (see the section, "Installing or Updating the Mod").

(2) USE THE LATEST VERSION. If you're experiencing issues, such as the "camera jitter" bug, "light flicker" bug or "bright face" bug, please download one of the current versions and run the batch file. There's no worries about renaming files or changing the read-only attribute. The batch file will do it all for you (see the section, Installing or Updating the Mod").

PLEASE ENDORSE

Like the mod? Want to give a little back to the author for making and supporting it? Consider giving it an endorsement! If it doesn't seem to work for you, please let me know (see, "Questions, Comments or Suggestions").

WHAT'S NEW

FIXED: The "camera jitter" bug experienced sometimes by players when they moved should be resolved. NEW: One of the two current versions makes the text size larger during dialog interactions, including buy-sell inventory displays. This should make it easier to read on smaller displays. The largest text size practical was set - any larger and inventory items were hidden. This version also has the fixes of previous versions for the "light flicker" and "bright face" bugs, as well as the batch file enhancements and log creation of previous versions.

WHAT THE MOD DOES

WOW Maximum Performance Boosts replaces the game's Engine.ini file with one that increases game *performance* as recommended by the UE4 website. This can make it possible for older computers having slower processors and less powerful graphics to run the game.

WHAT IT DOESN'T DO

WOW Maximum Performance Boosts doesn't increase the *quality* of the game's images. Objects won't be as crisp or come into view as quickly as they would without the mod, but this is the only way it's possible to play on some older computers.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you change some settings to increase performance, it makes sense that video quality will be slightly reduced, but that's better than having a game with annoying lag or not being able to play at all! Here's what you can expect with this mod:
  • During dialog interactions, the left ear of NPCs is often brighter than normal, but the rest of the face is fine.
  • Small objects like foliage sometimes don't fade into view until you are closer to them.
  • During the start of dialog interactions, NPC clothes textures are briefly blurry, but quickly become more sharp.
  • A few shadows don't have smooth edges, but most do.
  • Bigger text version only: The text of the Quit button on the start screen is hidden. Players can still quit the game by moving their cursor to the bottom of the screen or scrolling to the bottom with the console controller and selecting the hidden button.

FILES INCLUDED WITH THE MOD

  • Engine.bak.ini - A copy of the original Engine.ini file installed by the game.
  • Engine.ini - A read-only version of Engine.wow.ini you may use to manually install (copy and paste) yourself.
  • Engine.wow.ini - The Engine.ini file installed by RunMe.bat.
  • RunMe.bat - The batch file that installs Engine.bak.ini and Engine.wow.ini.
  • ReadMet.txt - Document containing installation instructions and info about the mod.

INSTALLING OR UPDATING THE MOD

Please note the change in step (6), as running batch files with elevated privileges doesn't work on some systems.

  • There's no need to remove, rename or change the read-only attribute of the Engin.ini file.
  • Copy "wow-maximum-performance-boosts-version-1-5.zip" to your computer desktop.
  • If The Outer Worlds game is running, exit the game.
  • Right-click the .zip file and select the option to unpack the files to your desktop.
  • Open the folder for your type of game (either, "Epic Launcher Version" or "Windows Store Version").
  • Double-click "RunMe.bat" (do *not* use the "Run as Administrator" option).
  • That's it! In the WindowsNoEditor folder will be three files:
* Engine.bak.ini - A copy of the default Engine.ini game file
* Engine.ini - The new Engine.ini file for this mod
* Engine_[date]_[time].ini: A backup of the previous Engine.ini (where [date] is the current date and [time] is in the current time)

UNINSTALLING THE MOD

If you find the mod isn't working for you, let the author know!  Perhaps a solution can be added to the next update (see the section, "Contacting the Author"). If you decide to remove the mod, the best way is to use another mod: "WOW Ini Fixer" which is also available on NexusMods.com. If you prefer to manually remove the mod, you'll find instructions for doing this on the Documents tab of this mod page.

GEEKY INFO: HOW THE BATCH FILE WORKS

When you run the RunMe.bat file, these commands are executed:

  • xcopy /R /Y Engine.wow.ini [PathToGameFolder] (copies Engine.wow.ini to the game folder)
  • xcopy /R /Y Engine.bak.ini [PathToGameFolder] (copies Engine.bak.ini to the game folder)
  • attrib -R [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini (removes the read-only attribute from the current Engine.ini file)
  • ren "[PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini" "Engine_%date:~-4,4%-%date:~-10,2%-%date:~-7,2%_%time:~0,2%-%time:~3,2%-%time:~6,2%.ini" (renames the current Engine.ini file as a backup)
  • ren [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.wow.ini Engine.ini (renames the new file as Engine.ini)
  • attrib +R [PathToGameFolder]\Engine.ini (adds the read-only attribute to the new Engine.ini file).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

If you play Skyrim, you've probably seen one of my mods on Nexus, Steam or Bethesda. I've released more than 160 mods for Skyrim Special Edition, which have more than 10 million downloads (yeah, yeah, I can't believe it myself). I love The Outer Worlds, and can't wait for the mod kit to be released. I just can't get enough out of making games like this one more fun for others!
