3/7/2024 Update is done and uploaded. I've updated the key arrangement, fixed the "revert" key to work more reliably and added MUCH requested swap of turn and strafe keys (the original method version has been updated too). I have downloaded several versions (GOG, Steam, etc) and have a 99% solution for most people to just drag and drop.
If it still doesn't work, one fix for any version of Dosbox is to edit the dosbox.conf file (GOG calls it dosbox-arena.conf) and change the line "mapperfile=(filename)" to include the name of one of the files in my mod (which ever one you installed. They are identical, just different names).
Thanks a bunch for having cooked up this remapping! It’s much more sane than whatever they brewed in-house back in ye olde times.
Just one thing though, what do I edit so that map is back on Tab again, like it was in the previous version? Reaching all the way to M every time I want to check something (and I check the map often) can get frustrating. Personally, I don’t need character window on Tab because F1 isn’t that far away anyway, and worst case, I can click the portrait.
Hello friend, do I need to install the previous version before installing version 3.0? I asked because the previous version contains a file called "mapper-0.74.map", which the new version does not have. I have the steam version.
That's unfortunate. I've seen this "M" key issue (yes, even while holding "L Alt" despite ArtInPinkerton's assumption otherwise) mentioned now and then, but it doesn't happen to everyone so the cause seems mysterious. In the comments under this Steam guide, one user claims they fixed it by re-downloading the mod "from another site" (not sure which site they meant, but here's the ModDB page if you want to give it a try...the files should be identical, but it's possible they aren't).
Personally, I've gotten used to playing Arena without using this mod: that's the easiest way to avoid all potential issues! 😄 The original controls are quaint, but really aren't that bad once you get used to them.
I rebuilt the whole mapping, tested and all keys work when "reverting back" as well as adding in the variant that swaps the turns with the strafing keys. It should be up in a day.
Love it, but would love to have A and D strafe, and Q and E turn... so exactly flipped from what it is with this mod...
How and what exactly would I have to change in the files or via the key mapping dos box GUI, for it to work? I'm kinda overwhelmed, a fair bit right now...
You have to hold ALT while typing words. The way the mapper works is it overrides the normal keys. Holding Left Alt reverts it back for typing as long as you hold it down.

EDIT: Changing it to this (Steam) allows C to be cast and V to be quick cast, as listed in the pictures:
key_lshift "key 96" "key 118" "key 32" "key 304" "key 111"
key_c "key 99" "key 118"
key_v "key 118 mod1"
