for FF7R, since the developer were using a "custom made Unreal Engine 4.18" the process would not as easy as the other games that also based on UE4. The object that you already cooked in Unreal should be injected to original file properly with Hex-tool or injector tool.
I wish i could try to make it for you, but too bad I don't play FF7R anymore since I've just running out of my tiny SSD space =)) it's took almost 90GB so I've gotta uninstalled it. Maybe I will re-installed it if I've money to buy a bigger SSD drive ;)
or you may try to join this nice discord channel : https://discord.gg/eZsYtQvC ; there are so many nice friends (e.g JujuB, TerryXXX, and many2 more nice friends) who still active modding FF7R and they will love to help you to make this light saber mod.
I tried to make new M_eye2 material, but it doesn't work, is there a specific setup needed for changing materials and not just textures other than the standard one?

Happy gaming and cheers,
Chris
Would it be possible and are you willing to do a version of this which is half as emissive, for a more subtle/realistic effect?

Btw, I made some simple mods (weapons, armors, suits, custom shaders, etc.) for FF7R in the past. If you are still playing FF7R you may try it from my mod list here

I hope you will like some of them.
Are the any tutorial how to make this kind of mod? Is it possible to make the eye with even other material, like animated one?
Cheers,
Chris
