Security update for Nexus Mod Manager

  • Comment

Today we are releasing some security updates for the Nexus Mod Manager to bring us in line with the new EU GDPR rules coming into force next month.

NMM has been "end-of-line" since 2016, which means we no longer provide any official support for the software, but we thought it was prudent to spend the time and money to release this update so our users could continue to use the software's online services while ensuring we're compliant with the new regulations. We also did not want people to think we were using the GDPR as an excuse to force people on to our new mod manager, Vortex, either. The alternative was to simply turn off the old services completely, essentially making NMM, and any other software using our old login services, offline only.

To prevent any drama with this process, we've even patched up version 0.52.3 of NMM (the last version before the profile functionality was added) so there are no complaints.

In order to be compliant, we need to turn off our old, less secure login to the web services completely. We plan to do this on Tuesday the 8th of May. This will mean anyone who does not update their NMM will no longer be able to use NMM online. This will prevent you from being able to login, check for new file versions or download mods from the site directly in to NMM. This will also affect any other software that uses the old login destination and method, for example, Mod Organizer. We do not officially support Mod Organizer, nor is it made, updated or maintained by us, so any updates needed to ensure it works with our new login service will need to be handled by the team behind Mod Organizer. If you are currently a coder with software making use of the old Nexus login system, please do get in contact via PM or Discord and I will put you through to the appropriate person to help you get on to the newer system as soon as possible.

For convenience, both updated versions of NMM can be found on a new file page setup to make this a little easier. Remember, download 0.65.0 if you are using a version of NMM that is 0.60.x or later. Download 0.52.4 if you are using version 0.52.3 of NMM.

Apologies for the inconvenience caused, but it's 8 year old code now and, at some point, this was going to happen!

Go to this link for the current version of Nexus Mod Manager:

[ the "new file page" link in the article above is for a much older version that is very buggy -- do not use NMM v0.65.2 ]

There's an issue with the latest update for NMM - it stops you from moving mods in the plug-in section of NMM (0.65.8) It is being looked at by Squid-Box I believe

Yes, there continue to be various issues, even with the latest version. For example, if a mod contains an .esl file, instead of .esp, then NMM may seemingly install the mod, but the .esl file might not actually be enabled. That, too, has been reported. But even so, the latest version works better than v0.65.2.

For those who are interested, here is a link to the current list of reported issues:

I downloaded vortex with no problem. Still can't get 65.2 NMM up and running at all, so I am still going with 64. which has never given me a bit of trouble. Am still working on Vortex, and now know how to download from NMM and from Nexus, but am still looking into other things as well. At least I also have archive Innvalidation working also on both Vortex and NMM 64.0

After hours of research, window 10 64 bit pro; and the new win 10 security update , along with NMM security update. : Open Nexus Mod manager : At top left where you see the wheels between the Folder and light bulb click onto the wheels and in (General) check mark all top (Association) 3 boxes , make sure all are enabled.. After I did that All works ok now . I do not get security issue with SkYUI and it will. install and enable now...Unlike before where I could install SkyUI but when trying to enable the mod, it would not enable. It works ok Now. That is all I did. after Hours upon Hours of looking for answers....

Mine were greyed out, then I ran the Nexus Mod Manager as administrator, then the boxes weren't greyed out, gonna try and see if it fixes the mod error with installing mods...

Edit: and it didn't. I'm at a loss here

Yup looks like I have to manually add everything via FMM I was so happy to have just built a new computer (the first new on in about 8 years too!) now I am enraged and upset I was considering a premium membership too to get stuff Downloaded quickly but when I could't even get a few mods to work I'm not going to bother

You sir, are a saint and a scholar, an overall true gentleman. I checked all the association boxes under general and was disheartened when at it failed due to the same security error.

However, I noticed in the bottom of the general page there is a fine print that reads *Requires a restart to be applied! Sure enough, after relaunching NMM my SkyUI download went through and is enabled.

Hats off to you good sir, you have my eternal gratitude and slightly awkward infatuation.

I have noticed random issues downloading files recently ( also noticed recent issues with Author's uploads as well...). It seems the site is experiencing technical difficulties (?). I have used Mod Organizer for years. Vortex looked/looks promising but the alpha is not ready for my demands yet when I tried it last. NMM has always worked adequately with occasional failures. Mod Organizer can get downright sadistic if you get too crazy merging junk. I think something is going on with the site...Needs someone smarter than me looking at it though.

As far as I understood it Premium Membership entitles you to: No advertisements, uncapped downloads and the flashy "bling" PREMIUM sign to denote your donation. Operative word there is "donation". I personally feel and agree that the site should/will receive negative AND positive feedback on all products and services offered. I also believe that each of us has the responsibility to provide accurate feedback in a reasonable, helpful manner if we actually expect reasonable, helpful responses. Civility is a learned behavior, one that is necessary for the smooth function of any community. Please apply filters as needed. I have downloaded hundreds of mods here and would hate to see the culture change to a bunch of fishwives acting out at the least provocation or the slightest upset. This is still primarily about games...playing games. Perspective, reason, civility and tact will get you closer to your goals in most situations.

Un-installed both NMM and Vortex. Using Fomm now less headache's. My own opinion, Nmm was a great manager before all the security updates , now it is crap. Vortex maybe another year or two, will work, maybe, Now,, Vortex is not worth a crap. MO just to dam complicated and problematic, and not user friendly, for those of who only used pen and paper, that was the only thing we had to write with at school, and, we had no pc. . So I follow rule of thumb. If it works why mess with it ? Just like all things that work good, only takes one mistake to make it not work worth a Crap. Just like was done to NMM.

Man these changes break my heart. And it doesn't help that Fallout 76 it's possibly getting rid of modding and just making the "Creation Club" more relevant. Even though the Nexus is plagued with "Hot Girl Face Preset" or "Anime Titty Preset" or "Piper Replacer" mods it was a good and easy system. Hopefully Vortex is just NMM but easier and more UI friendly cause "if it aint broken dont fix it"!!!
