This mod will warn you when you haven't saved in a while, and give a short description of how much has happened since your last save. By default it won't force a save (as Starsector's saving process can take quite a while with many mods installed), but you can enable autosaves by editing saves/common/lw_autosave_settings.json.data after running the mod once.
