Description
Inspired by Planet Renaming Project, but with the exact opposite goal in mind. All but a handful of the stars in-game are either real or are based on real stars, so I wanted to give them their actual names instead of the fictional ones they go by in the vanilla game. In my head I think it makes sense that the star map would still mostly use scientific names, assuming that the fictional given names do still exist, but are essentially limited to word of mouth between explorers, settlers, and such. In the settled systems, space exploration is generally forgotten about and neglected by much of society, so to me it makes sense that not every star within 50 light years has a unique given name yet. I think the end result with most of the stars and planets renamed really emphasizes the pushing the boundary part of exploring the cosmos. Like you're not going to the Strix system, which someone apparently has already named, you're going to the HD 131023 system!! HD 131023?? whaat??? I wonder what's out there????

To give them all their proper names, I identified each star by its Gliese Catalogue ID, which is provided on the star map in-game, then followed that through to its Henry Draper ID, and then its Bayer designation or Flamsteed designation if it had it. I also doubled checked that the qualities of each star in-game matched those of its real life counterpart before confirming that the correct real identity should belong to an in-game star.

Most stars in-game have Bayer designations or Flamsteed designations. Those would be stars named similarly to Mu Cassiopeia B or 61 Cygni A, respectively. A lot of stars that don't have a Bayer or Flamsteed designations go by their Henry Draper ID, which would be stars named similarly to HD 158614 B, or their Tycho-2 Catalogue ID, which would be stars named similarly to TYC 904-1278-1.

I also changed the way planets and their moons are named in accordance with how exoplanets are usually named today. Instead of a planet getting a roman numeral and its moon getting a letter, each planet now gets a lowercase letter and their moon gets a roman numeral. Planet naming also starts at b, instead of the roman numeral I or letter a, because the star is the first body in the system and it gets capital A. For example, Toliman II has been renamed to Alpha Centauri B c because it's the third body in the entire system of Alpha Centauri B (which is a B because it's also in a system with Alpha Centauri A).

The settled part of the settled systems, all the systems where major cities and settlements are, as well as any planet or moon that already has a unique name in-game, has not been changed. Cheyenne, for example, is still called Cheyenne, and all the bodies in its system retain their unique names. This is true for Sol, Alpha Centauri A, Wolf 359, Cheyenne, Volii, Narion, and a few others. Any planet or moon with a unique name, in any system, retains their given fictional names even if their star's name has been changed.

All main quests, radiant quests, activities, slates, what have you, that reference a specific star or planet will refer to the updated name from this mod.

If any astronomer more experienced or knowledgeable than I notices any errors I may have made, please comment and I'd be happy to update the mod to better match the real universe.
