What is it?
Gameplay Style: RP, Casual, Exploration
Combat Capability: Good
Eag's Ship Shop wanted to take a look to the UC's past and score the ability to resurrect a handful of old decommissioned ship designs that were once in heavy use by the United Colonies Navigator Corps: A branch of the UC Navy once dedicated to the exploration of space.
Additionally, the lead designer of Eag's Ship Shop, having very good relations with the UC Cabinet members, scored permission to bring back three of the Navigator Corps designs for the general public. Sarah Morgan of Constellation has been one of our long-time partners in ship design consultation. It also just so happens that she was once the director for the Navigator Corps shortly before it's closure. So together, Eag's Ship Shop and Ms. Morgan, we have brought a small handful of these legendary Navigator Corps back to life!
This is the third out of three Navigator Corps vessels we rebuilt, the Acropolis-Class Operations Cruiser.
The Acropolis-Class was seen as the penultimate Navigator Corps exploration vessel. If a larger expedition was held to far off places, one would almost always see an Acropolis with the fleet as a flagship; commanding and organizing the entire operation. All VIPs, Admirals, and expedition leads, if present, would often be housed aboard.
This massive vessel contained enough facilities to cater to a larger crew, as well as expedition and research personnel. The Acropolis contains, but not limited to, a large mess hall, a sickbay, research facility, and a flag bridge in addition to the keel-mounted Ares bridge (more like a wheelhouse in this application). Once on the ground, it wasn't uncommon to see many expedition personnel coming and going from the Acropolis' front door regardless if they were part of it's crew. As such, the Acropolis would serve as a temporary ground HQ while a more permanent outpost was being constructed for the expedition. Or, if no Corbita-Freighter with an Outpost construction team was present, the Acropolis would fulfill that permanent HQ role.
Design-wise, the Acropolis follows very closely the same structural hull design as the Navigator Corps Corbita-Class Freighter does. The original Deimos Staryards engineers who designed all of the vessels the Navigator Corps used, took the tried and true heavy-duty frame of the mighty Corbita and shaped the Acropolis around it.
We also see the same bottom keel-mounted Ares DS Bridge wheelhouse that all of the Navigator Corps designs have had so far. Sarah Morgan stated when we first began the rebuild process, that most Navigator Corps vessels had this feature as it was assumed that Navigator Corps personnel would be spending more time looking down than necessarily needing a big tactical view for combat.
The keen observer will see the single Slayton SAL series engine at the rear, generally only seen on Freestar Collective militia vessels. The period of time that the Navigator Corps was active was shortly following the Colony War, and both governments were trying to make an effort to maintain peace, and performing gestures of cooperation. This vessel is one such of a gesture. A bit of a bygone time compared to current day's events many years later: You would never see any Slayton modules appearing on an official Deimos Staryards/United Colonies naval vessel today. But thankfully, due to the nature of the UC Cabinet's decommissioning process of these vessels to us, and Eag's Ship Shop being a 3rd party ship design and distribution firm, we are able to secure these SAL drives for our replicas and build these ships exactly as they once were when they were all in service!
If you're the leader of a scientific organization, dedicated to the long forgotten practice of space exploration, or someone who just loves United Colonies history, come on by New Atlantis today and inquire about the Acropolis-Class. This vessel has been shelved for decades, and yearns to touch down on lands unknown with you and your crew.
