About this mod
Combat Oxygen Overhaul (CO2) is a comprehensive mod designed to add depth to Starfield’s ranged combat by making oxygen/CO2 actually have an impact. Guns now expend oxygen when fired, having CO2 will now slow you down, affect your weapon accuracy, and more.

I personally liked what Cyberpunk 2077 did when they overhauled the stamina system in the 2.0 update. That is why I decided to create a system in Starfield that is similar.
UPDATE 1.1:
- Kills restore oxygen. Additional ranks will increase amount restored, grant a chance to restore oxygen on hit, and restore CO2 on kill.
- Having CO2 provides bonus damage, and later ranks increases crit hit chance and more.
- Increases move speed while aiming, and later increases accuracy and stability while moving.
- Ranged weapons no longer expend oxygen when shooting, but you now gradually lose oxygen while your weapon is out, which decreases faster while aiming.
Guns Expend Oxygen
Every shot fired expends oxygen, and the cost is based on the weapon type, the weight of the weapon(currently only base weight, I'm not sure there's a way to get the current weight from mods and legendary effects), skills, and player oxygen multipliers (OxygenUseMult and PlayerOxygenUseMult).
All weapons with the exception of automatic guns and miniguns(Automatics cost 3, miniguns cost 1.5) have a base cost of 10, which is adjusted based on the weight of the weapon. Originally I didn't factor in weight, but I found it odd how a Razorback had the same cost as a Sidestar. If requested, I can upload a separate version where weight is not a factor.
Gameplay options are available to adjust the oxygen cost for each weapon type (ranges from 0.5x to 1.5x the base cost), as well as the weight multipliers used to calculate the oxygen cost.
Modified Personal Atmosphere
- Unlimited use outside of combat (can be toggled in the gameplay options).
- Now beneficial in ranged combat as well.
New Skill: Combat Focus
- Kills have a chance to activate Combat Focus, a state that temporarily eliminates oxygen costs for guns. Higher ranks in Combat Focus enable time slowdown when aiming, and more.
New Skill: Basic Training
- Reduces the effect sprinting has on weapon accuracy and stability
- Allows CO2 to decrease when aiming or moving in combat
New Items
2 new items that has a chance to be found. Their effects scale with whatever settings you have for medical item healing in the gameplay options menu.
OxyPack: Restores 10 oxygen/s for 5 seconds
Aeroboost: Restores 3 oxygen/s for 30 seconds, and increases CO2 recovery rate by 300%
Modified Items
Several chems and aid items have been modified to reduce oxygen use for all actions, in addition to their vanilla effects.
CO2 Impact in Combat
- Zero Oxygen Penalties: Reduced reload speed, decreased aiming stability and accuracy, increased stagger, and increased limb damage vulnerability.
- CO2 Buildup: Reduces movement speed as it accumulates.
- Sprint After-Effects: Sprinting reduces aiming stability and accuracy, with more severe penalties as CO2 levels rise.
- Oxygen Regeneration in Combat: Slower regeneration while running or sprinting.
- Shooting Delays Oxygen Regeneration: A brief delay in regeneration occurs after shooting.
- CO2 Accumulation While Aiming: Aiming with a weapon gradually expends oxygen.
- Combat Movement Effects: Aiming, shooting, or moving in combat prevents CO2 from decreasing.
- Skill Modifications: Several skills have been updated to reduce the negative effects of low oxygen and decrease the oxygen cost for firearms, providing essential benefits for survival in combat.
