Here is a mod that I was thinking about last year, but I had no idea how to implement it until today. ^_^ I love Stardew Valley's critters, but I was a little sad by how I don't see them often (aside from butterflies and the occasional birds) and how they usually run off to hide in a bush/tree (it is rather realistic though). So, here comes my Wild Animals mod to fill that animal-shaped void in my heart!

This mod adds numerous animals to multiple places in-game, depending on the time, weather, and season. You are pretty much guaranteed to see the animals as long as you have access to the areas that they spawn in. They tend to wander so you may or may not lose sight of some of them, especially if they wander behind the trees or in the grass.

These animals don't really do much of anything and are more of just moving decor for your valley that occasionally makes noises. I do hope I'll be able to add some sort of gameplay mechanic or more interactivity with these animals someday, but that idea may take a while (if it even ever gets implemented due to my inexperience with modding). ^_^''

Most animals are randomized by default: animals that are considered as "solitary" in behavior in the wild are not guaranteed to show up in groups while the "social" animals are almost always in groups, a small portion of them also have a chance of not showing up at all. This is to make sure that the mod feels a little more varied. Some animals also have coat variants, so they do not look the same every day.

!!! NOTE !!!: This mod will add extra load for your game to process because of the number of animals and their settings that determine whether they should appear or not on the current in-game day. This mod may cause lag! However, I personally have not experienced lag during its testing phase with minimal other mods.

ANOTHER THING TO TAKE NOTE OF: If mods such as SVE or RSV crash or make red errors pop up while you are playing the game, this mod may not function correctly because it doesn't detect the status of these mods. The solution to this is to restart your game and check your mods to see what's causing the issue. I personally had this happen a few times long ago when I had a loooot of mods in my game (I now manage my mods much more carefully to avoid these issues). ^_^''

ONE LAST THING: My SVE and RSV additions are based on personal preference (and random thoughts), so I'm really sorry if they do not match what those mods' locations are based on. ;-;

Below is the list of animals currently included in the mod:
Spoiler:
Show

Features that I might add in the future:
  • Baby animals!
  • More aquatic animals?
  • More reptiles/amphibians?
  • More tokens that unlocks certain animals with vanilla content i.e. through special orders, whether the player chooses between Community Center or Joja, and wallet items
  • Overhaul the animals' appearance, animation, and behavior around the player (which may also be affected by  your in-game choices)
  • Wild animals giving randomized set of items to the player if certain conditions are met (you won't exactly get the most valuable items from most all of them though!) They might also get their own portraits when you interact with them

Features that I will not be adding:
I will not be using the following ideas even if they are ever implemented to future Custom Companion builds
  • The ability to capture the wild animals
  • The ability to kill the wild animals (this will also depend on if there will be a new aggressive behavior added by the framework in the future)

Q: How to install this mod?
A:
  • Install the latest version of SMAPI.
  • Unzip the zip file.
  • Drop the extracted folder in your mods folder. _(:3 」∠)_

Q: Is this mod compatible with other mods?

A: This mod should work with other mods. The only issue is that some animals have a higher chance of getting stuck in trees/bushes added from other mods. This mod should be semi-compatible with Stardew Valley Expanded's map changes

Although, I have not played with SVE and RSV for a long time. So, I cannot guarantee 100% compatibility with every update that may or may not have added/altered maps.  I have not checked the latest versions of SVE since the beginning of 2022, but I do intend to update the compatibility in the upcoming 1.2.0 update.

Q: Is this mod compatible with multiplayer or the mobile version of the game?
A:
The Custom Companions modding framework is compatible with multiplayer, so that means my mod should be multiplayer-compatible to a certain extent. I am not 100% sure though!

In regards to multiplayer, there may or may not be some syncing issues with what can and won't spawn (most notable for farmhands, as since  the mod works for the host work just fine) and could cause the 'Unable to spawn in greenhouse' error in the SMAPI window. I have no idea what causes this to occur, but I can at least guarantee this doesn't affect the game whatsoever. (However, I must note that my game has a bit of a syncing issue when I play multiplayer in general, so I'm not sure if this is also specific to this mod)

This mod is not compatible with the mobile version of the game.

Q: There are too many animals! Can I lessen the number of animals per map?
A: Most animals are randomized by default (mainly the ones that are considered solitary). There is a config file that gets generated when you first launch the game with the mod. There are two options you can choose that will affect the animals; True or False.

Q: I want to use retextures for the animals. Can I use pre-existing retextures that were made before this mod existed? Can I make my own retextures?
A: Yep! :D All of my animals use vanilla Stardew Valley animals as a base, so all that really matters is the sprite size. (i.e. My foxes use the dog sprites as a base, so you can use any dog/cat retextures to replace them, but you may have to alter the last/bottom frames for the idle animation). There are a select few that do not use any of SV's sprite base/size, which use 24 x 24 pixel size. Btw, you can even upload any retextures of my animals if you want! :)

Q: Can I use the files from this mod for other mods to upload?
A:
Yep! :D I don't really mind if you reupload my animals for different mods!... Although, I am not entirely sure about how I feel if they were hidden behind a paywall. So, uhh, I'd prefer that these are to remain free. Donations are fine though! I just don't want my assets to be part of something that needs to be purchased. :(

Q: Can I use older versions of this mod?
A:
If you prefer to use older versions of this mod, you definitely can. They should still work in your game regardless of how old they are, just be sure to use only one copy of this mod at a time. Just a small warning: some older versions may contain unfixed bugs.

Q: There are barely any animals during winter. Is something wrong?
A: A lot of the animals are not available during the winter to simulate what real-life animals do when it's extremely cold out. There are a few animals that persist and show up during the winter though.

Q: Where is the Wild Creatures mod?
A: The Wild Creatures mod is a mod that I no longer maintain, mainly because I wasn't fond of how it functioned at the time. However, I did end up splitting it up and putting some of the creatures from that mod into my other mods Domestic Animals and Wild Animals (they're tagged as "Bonus Animals" in the config file).

  • Animals that are swimming may look like they're swimming above water when they're too close to land. This is only a visual issue and will not happen too often anyway.
  • Some objects do not have collision, so animals may go through these areas (i.e. the lonely stone in the beach map)

  • Concerned Ape for his marvelous game that I spent many, many hours on. Stardew Valley will always be placed in a special place in my heart and I will never regret owning the game (thanks again to my friend who bought it for me a couple of years ago!) His pixel art and the color palette are undeniably beautiful and I tried to have my animals match the aesthetic. <3
  • Pathoschild for their modding API "SMAPI" and Content Patcher. As well as PeacefulEnd for their modding framework Custom Companions. These mods allowed me to create this mod. I've always wanted to have more animals in the world of Stardew Valley because I just love animals. <3
  • Obamoose for their Kitty Cats mod! The moment I saw that mod I thought to myself "Wait a minute... That can be done now?" and it spurred on this drive to work on my Wild Animals mod. Whenever I felt stuck in the little coding process, I did comparisons with their adorable mod's coding structure as an example (and of course PeacefulEnd's Custom Companions in-depth wiki was a great help and easy to understand). The Kitty Cats mod was a great visual for me while I was creating this mod (and I love cats, so this mod is definitely staying in my game) <3
  • Credits to Eemie, tokiriZhuriajigajang, and HopeWasHere as well! I've used their mods long before I started creating this one and I adore them a lot. I wanted to incorporate them into the designs of the animals I have created here. <3

I just created a Ko-fi! If you like my works, then feel free to buy me a coffee~! I'll greatly appreciate the support! <3 However, my mods will always stay free for the public!
