Murphy appears once per week (by default on Wednesday, though you use the config to change it). He'll be located on the far side docks, across the repaired bridge and past the tide pools.

Note:
  • You must receive a letter from Willy about Murphy before he appears. See the Meet Murphy? section of the F.A.Q. below.
  • The beach's bridge must be repaired in order to reach Murphy.
  • Murphy leaves before nightfall.

Special Note (spoilers below for SDV v1.5):
Spoiler:
Show

  • Murphy can also appear on Ginger Island on a separate date.
  • You must receive a separate letter from Murphy before he appears on Ginger Island.
  • The resort must be repaired in order to reach Murphy at Ginger Island.
  • You can customize the date he appears on Ginger Island, but it can't be the same as his beach appearance.
  • If you set both days the same by accident, his Ginger Island appearance be moved to the next day.

Once you've met Murphy, he will offer you a job as a deckhand aboard his fishing trawler: The Dawnshard.

If you agree to help, you'll see a scene of you and Murphy heading out to sea. Then the fun  begins!

[Engine] The Cabin

The cabin is where the engine is located and where you'll first appear. When an engine failing event happens, this is the room it'll be.

There is also a radio located in the bottom right corner, which allows you to play any in-game music you've heard previously. The music will play in all three areas of the trawler without interruption.

An example of the engine failure:

[Nets] The Deck

The deck is where you'll be frequently going back and forth from! Here you'll find the door to the cabin, the nets and finally the trapdoor that leads to the hull.

When a net ripping or ripped event occurs, it will be on the deck. See the example below:

[Flooding] The Hull

The hull is where you'll likely be spending most of your fishing trip, as holes like to appear frequently. Anytime a hull hole appears, you'll want to repair it quickly otherwise the boat may start to flood!

A hull leak will appear like so:

This handy user interface will appear in the top left corner of your screen while you are on your fishing trip.

A breakdown of each event is shown below:
  • Flooding: Shows total amount of water taken in from leaking holes. Will go up by 2 per leaking hole. Can be reduced by 5 by using the bailing bucket. If this reaches 100%, the trip will fail.

  • Nets: Gives 1 fish per working net. If one net is damaged, the UI will show it as ripping. If both are ripped, then it will show up as ripped.

  • Engine: Gives a 2 fish boost to the nets, so long as it is working. It will show as failing if it is broken.

Some things to note:
  • Once the timer reaches 0:00, the trip will end successfully.
  • The amount of fish you get is determined by the amount of fish caught by the net, which is shown in the UI with a fish icon.
  • If flooding reaches 100%, the trip will fail and your total fish caught will be reduced to 1/4th of the quantity.
  • If both the nets and engine are failing, then you will start to lose fish!

After you complete a fishing trip, your rewards will appear in the large fishing crate on the left side of Murphy. Interact with it to open up a chest like menu.

By default, you will only catch ocean fish that you are currently able to catch. You may also find Ancient Flags, which will rarely appear mixed in with your hauled fish.

Additionally, you will gain 5% of the fishing experience for each fish caught.

Ancient Flags are old and magical flags once flown by pirates and sailors of times long lost. They can be found rarely after a fishing trip, though the quantity of fish caught and your fishing level determines the chances of getting one.

After bringing your ancient flag to Murphy, he'll identify it as one of the following flags.

Parley Flag
  • Prevents leaks from occurring, but lowers reward quality by 25%.

Jolly Roger
  • Quadruples the fishing net output, but any time a leak occurs all holes will leak.

The Gambler's Crest
  • Has a 50% chance of doubling the amount of fish caught, but a 25% chance of consuming all the fish.

Mermaid's Blessing
  • Has a 10% chance of consuming a fish, but gives a random fishing chest reward.

The Patron Saint
  • Has a 25% chance of consuming a fish, but gives the full experience for catching it.

The Shark's Fin
  • Extends the fishing trawler trip by one minute, allowing for more time to catch fish.

Worldly Flag
  • Allows the trawler to catch fish not normally available in the ocean.

Slime King Flag
  • Consumes all fish but gives a 75% chance of converting each fish into some slime, 50% chance to convert to a Slimejack and a 1% chance to convert to a random slime egg.

King Crab Flag
  • Limits the trawler to crab pot based catches, with a higher chance of crabs.

These are rewards that can appear after a fishing trip, but the chances of getting one solely rely on the amount of fishing trips a player has completed.

Angler's Ring
  • Gives a constant +2 Fishing level bonus while worn.

Fishing Trawlers is multiplayer compatible! To join another farmer's fishing trip, simply be on the same dock as Murphy before he departs.

There are some caveats to keep in mind:
  • The rewards are calculated individually, meaning each deckhand's fishing level determines the fish they catch.
  • The trawler will only fly the flag of the person who initiated the trip. The flag will affect all deckhands.

I have not encountered any mods that are incompatible, but always make sure your saves are backed up.

How do I...

Meet Murphy?
  • Once you reach the required fishing level (default level 3) and it is the day of week that Murphy arrives (default Wednesday), you'll get a letter from Willy explaining the details.
  • Note: The beach's bridge also needs to be repaired before Willy's letter will be sent.

Find Murphy?
  • Murphy can be found on the far side docks, across the repaired bridge and past the tide pools.
  • If you're a farmhand (e.g. not the main player), Murphy will appear according to the main player's config settings.

Fix a broken engine / net / hole?
  • Right click near the moving exclamation mark to repair the failing part. Note: Make sure you are standing in front of and close to the spot in order to repair it!

Use the bailing bucket?
  • Right click while in the hull to take out water. Go the surface of the boat and right click while you're at the edge of the boat to empty it.

Find my reward?
  • The rewards from completing a fishing trip will show up in the large crate to left of Murphy. Interact with it just like a chest to see inside!

Hoist the ancient flag I got?
  • Talk with Murphy to get your ancient flag identified. After you have an identified ancient flag, right click on Murphy with the flag in your hand and he will take it off your hands.

Take down the flag I hoisted?
  • Talk with Murphy and use the "I've got some questions" dialogue, then click Could I have my flag back?

Stop the ship from sinking?
  • Always try to prevent your flooding levels from reaching 100%. I highly recommend using a consumable that gives a speed buff, such as coffee, before going a trip. Faster speed means you'll get to the repair locations faster. Faster repairs, especially with hull holes, means less flooding!
  • Bailing bucket is the key! Remember to always use your bailing bucket, which is given to you at the start of each trip, to remove water from the hull.
  • Keep in mind, depending on the ancient flag you're using, you may want to use a different strategy.

Bring friends along?
  • Make sure that anyone who wants to tag along is standing on the docks near Murphy. If you're not on the far side docks when Murphy agrees to head out, you'll miss out.

Change how many fish I am catching?

  • See the configuration options using Generic Mod Config Menu. There are options for changing net outputs and the boost that the working engine gives.
