Nevermind. I installed a mod called 'Custom Companions' that allows NPCs to have pets. A config of 'Custom Companions' is Emily's parrot walking around in her house instead of perching. The issue goes away once you disable Emily's pet config in 'Custom Companions'

amazing, thanks so much! i also realized im having trouble feeding my parrot. i watched your showcase video, in which clicking on the parrot with seeds in hand removes one seed from your inventory. when i do the same thing, the seed does not get removed from my inventory. not a big deal of course but maybe its because im doing something wrong?
