Changelogs
Have you ever been swarmed by slimes and found yourself waking up alone in the hospital? Have you also ever been frustrated that you nearly die and get life-saving surgery and nobody blinks an eye, much less reacts to your close call?

"Spouses React To Player 'Death'" is a content pack that scratches the itch of needing to see your spouse actually care whether you live or die. With 300+ lines of dialogue separated between the 12 vanilla spouses, 4 Stardew Valley Expanded marriage candidates (SVE v1.12) and more (see detailed content for full list), it adds just a splash of drama to life in Pelican Town, just to keep things interesting. This mod also supports custom spouses, so you can get your marital drama fix regardless of who you've chosen to marry.

Install

How to use
  • You do not need a new save file. Installing/uninstalling this mod will never affect your save data.
  • The cutscenes added by this mod will trigger automatically whenever your HP reaches 0. There is one cutscene for the Mines, one for the Skull Cavern, and one for the volcano on Ginger Island.
  • There is a configurable option to include a fourth cutscene, featuring an ex-spouse. See "Content Details" below for a description and instructions on toggling    this configuration.

    Compatibility

    • Works with Stardew Valley 1.5 on Linux/Mac/Windows.
    • It works on single player, and I don't see why it wouldn't work in multiplayer if you're married to an NPC, definitely won't work if married to another player.
    • Compatible (and includes special content for) with Stardew Valley Expanded!
    • Compatible with Platonic Partners and Friendships, courtesy of Amaranthacyan!
    • Compatible with all custom spouse NPCs!
    • Compatibility with polyamory mods hasn't been tested. Imo, it'll still work, but might logically seem a little odd. I'll try and make this compatible for future versions.

    Content Details
Here is a spoiler-free detailed description of all the content added by this mod. Hidden under spoiler tag for length.
    Spoiler:
    Show
  • As of 1.1.0, personalized cutscenes are available for: 12 vanilla spouses, 4 SVE spouses, Krobus, Wizard, Pam, Willy, Clint.
  • Option to skip mine and Skull Cavern cutscenes if they become too repetitive.
  • Skull Cavern 'Death' cutscene: When your HP reaches 0 in the Skull Cavern, you'll wake up in Harvey's hospital with severe injuries and have a cutscene with your worried spouse at your bedside. This cutscene is usually sad, depending on your spouse's personality and their past experiences. For SVE players: this cutscene also triggers with 'death' in the Crimson Badlands.
  • Mine 'Death' Cutscene: When your HP reaches 0 in the Mines, you'll wake up at the entrance with a mild injury and have a cutscene with your spouse, who came to get you. This cutscene has a bit of a lighter tone, sometimes humorous, depending on your spouse's personality.
  • There is also follow-up dialogue and a small chance to receive an item if you speak to your spouse on the same day as either cutscene. Note that you will not see the follow-up dialogue if you skip the cutscene.
  • Volcano 'Death' Cutscene: Introduced in v1.1.0. If you die in the volcano dungeon on Ginger Island, you'll receive one of three different cutscenes, depending on where you stand in your relationship with Leo. Also includes special cutscene if married to Willy. The bulk of your spouse's reaction happens when you speak to them after the cutscene, so be sure to go home and chat them up!
  • Special character cutscenes: Harvey, Maru and Krobus have slightly different Hospital cutscenes than the rest. You'll also get a different event entirely if married to Elliott, and you die in the Mines or Skull Cavern while he is gone on his book tour (14 heart event). Marriage to Willy will trigger an entirely different cutscene for volcano death.
  • CONFIG OPTION: "ExInvolvement". This toggles the option to trigger a different cutscene when you die in the Skull Cavern while divorced, but not remarried yet. This cutscene is bittersweet, and involves your ex visiting you when you wake up in the hospital. They also have follow-up dialogue if you talk to them on the same day, which is often sad/heartbroken/dismissive in nature.
       > This option only works with the vanilla spouses, SVE spouses, Wizard, Pam, Clint, Willy. If you're married to a custom spouse, toggling this option won't do anything.
       > Also, this will still work if you have several ex-spouses, but you'll only be able to see the cutscene for one of them (I dunno why...). The best way to trigger a specific NPC's cutscene is to use the Dark Shrine of Memory in the Witch's Hut as needed to keep only one character as an ex-wife or ex-husband.

    HOW TO TOGGLE CONFIG OPTION:

    1) Launch the game once after downloading this mod. SMAPI will automatically create a file called "config.json" in the mod folder.
    2) Exit the game and open the file. You'll need a program like Notepad.
    3) In the file, there is only one line, and the option set by default is "false" (which means that the cutscenes with your ex are disabled by default). Change that to "true", save the file, close it, and launch the game.
    4) If you ever change your mind, you can, at any time, change the option back to "false" to disable the cutscenes again.
P.S.: If you have a config option UI installed, it'll show up as a tickbox in your in-game menu!

  • Future update plans

Here are some ideas I'll try to include in future content updates!

[UPDATE 2023/09] This mod is no longer being worked on, I'm so sorry everyone ;; I've moved onto other things and I just don't have the motivation to tie this mod up. I've opened up permissions to use this mod as a springboard if you would like to continue expanding on it. Please remember to give proper credits; otherwise, have fun!! <3

[UPDATE 2022/11] Personal life has been an adventure and a half, and among other things, I lost the computer on which I was writing the RSV update. So that means all my progress was lost and I'm heartbroken. I'm putting my work for this mod on pause indefinitely while I recover from the psych damage (and other personal things). I'm really sorry, and I really hope you guys enjoy what's already here in the meantime ;; I'm so thankful for all your support <3

[Update 2021/08] I'm currently working on adding the 10 marriageable characters from Ridgeside Village for a v1.2 update! Thanks for all your support!!
  • Adding custom dialogue for more marriageable NPCs. I'll take suggestions if you have a spouse you'd want to see a personalized cutscene for, but if it's a       custom NPC from an author on Nexus, please understand that I need their explicit permission to add their character to this mod, and therefore, it's the NPC's    author who gives the final call, not me.
  • Adding a cutscene after passing out from exhaustion at 2AM. Currently, this seems above my skill level, so... it'll happen if it happens.
  • Revamping the "post-death cutscene" system to make each cutscene unique, and have a chronological storyline. Like heart events, but... for death!

       > This is a huge v2.0-kinda project, so I still have a lot of studying and tinkering to do before I even manage to come up with how to make it work. If any API mod creators want to collab on this, please message me, I'd love to work together to make it happen!

    Acknowledgments
  • This is my very first mod, and it would have been impossible without the help I received from people in the community!
  • Huge thanks to Lemurkat, who is the reason this mod exists in the first place. They provided me with a template taken from their own Jasper custom NPC    mod (please check it out!) for me to springboard off of, without which I never even would've known how to start!
  • Thanks to FlashShifter for providing permission to include his SVE NPCs in this mod. I hope I've done them justice!
  • Shoutout to everyone in the Discord and SMAPI subreddit for answering all my questions and guiding me whenever I got stuck.

And of course, thank you for checking out my mod! It's my very first one and I worked really hard on it, so it's a small thing but I'm still quite happy with it. If you have questions, suggestions for content, comments, or bugs to report, please let me know on Nexus or by finding me on Discord @/CasualInvidia#1235.
