At this point I basically can't live without Automate, but I've always thought it felt kind of cheaty. Don't get me wrong, I want to play Stardew Valley to have fun, and I absolutely have more fun playing the game when I'm not bogged down by spending 3 full days per in-game week checking, emptying, and refilling machines. But Automate out-of-the-box provides a massive amount of power right from the get-go. This mod aims to make automating chests a more mid-game endeavor, with the details laid out below. But before I get to those, credit where credit is due.
This mod is basically an amalgamation of Automators, Primitive Automate, and AutomateChests. Each of these mods are interesting and fun in their own right, but this mod attempts to blend the best parts of all of those together into a single functionality, requiring the user to craft automate-only chests after jumping through a few hoops - hoops we won't be able to do on day 1.
So to start, only 2 chests will now work to power an Automate machine group - Big Stone Chest, and Junimo Chest. Mini-Fridges, Mini-Shipping Bins, Chests, Stone Chests, Big Chests, Hoppers, and Auto-Grabbers can still be used to store things, but they won't be used to push or pull items in a machine group. That functionality is only reserved for Big Stone Chests. (Note: It also works w/ Junimo Chests, which are already late-game and expensive, but also required to remain as an Automate component to ensure the linking-multi-map functionality continues to work, which it does with this mod. So I basically left those alone.)
The unlock requirements for Big Stone Chest remain - purchased from Dwarf after completing a Robin Special Order. So at the very earliest, you'll be able to get the recipe in Fall of Year 1. However, based on the Special Orders presented, that could come much later as well. Also, the crafting requirements for Big Stone Chest have been dramatically changed, merging together all sorts of vanilla-friendly functionality to come up with an Automatic Chest. This combines a regular Stone Chest (to build on), an Auto-Grabber (to pull stuff from the machines), a couple Batteries (to power the whole thing), a handful of stone (to make the chest bigger), and of course, a Hopper (to put stuff into the machines).
Now I was shooting for a mid-game Automate, not an ultra-late-game setup where by the time you get the Hopper it's already basically useless. So this mod also changes the unlock requirements and crafting recipe for the Hopper, to allow the player access to it much earlier for a weak Automate alternative, but also to finally have a use when using Automate - as an ingredient to the Automatic Chest. The Hopper Recipe now unlocks at Farming level 9, meaning we don't even have to have started the Community Center or Joja Route in order to unlock it. And the recipe now takes a much easier to come by Hardwood, Copper/Iron/Gold Bars, and a Battery as well, since it is doing automatic work.
With all of that, getting your first (or even first dozen) Automatic Chests and putting together your Automate machine groups should seem like quite the accomplishment! And like you've earned the ability to set up and automate hundreds of casks, kegs, crab pots, furnaces, ...
Also, this supports i18n translations. I welcome any translations to languages!
Installation
- Install the latest version of SMAPI
- Install the latest version of Content Patcher, Automate, and Automators (note: For Automators, only the code component needs to be installed. Everything will still be just fine if both the code and content components are installed, but the content component takes another mod as a dependency, and both of those can be safely omitted - if you're trying to keep your mod list clean)
- Download and unzip this mod into the Mods folder
- Run the game using SMAPI
