About this mod
Extends the vanilla ore nodes set by adding three new node types to the Mines: Coal Ore, Siderite (Iron) Ore, Oxidized Gold Ore. These nodes provide a small supply of ores from the next zone. Spawn rates are balanced to provide a smooth gameplay experience and mitigate the "rush to floor 40/80" in order to start collecting the next tier of ore.

Mod Details:
This mod adds three new node types to the Mines: Coal Ore, Siderite (low-grade iron) Ore, Oxidized Gold (low-grade gold) Ore. Node spawn rates were tuned for a balanced gameplay experience that alleviates some of the stress points and maladaptive patterns induced by the vanilla spawn mechanics, without displacing the original vision for the mines. For example: floors 40-79 will still be best to find and farm iron ore; this mod helps you find enough ore to make a small number of iron bars as you descend the early floors so it's not an all-or-nothing race to reach 40 as soon as possible.
Nodes explained:
Coal Ore: Drops 1-2 coal, with additional chances to drop more coals. Interacts with Miner and Prospector professions for increased drops in accordance with their perk rules.
Siderite (Iron) Ore: Drops 1-2 iron ore (standard iron nodes drop 1-3), with a small chance to drop more ore. Interacts with Miner profession for increased drops.
Oxidized Gold (Gold) Ore: Drops 1-2 gold ore (standard gold nodes drop 1-3), with a small chance to drop iron or more gold ore. Interacts with Miner profession for increased drops.
Node spawn rates are as follows:
Coal Ore: Floors 1-9: 1%, Floors 11-29: 2%, Floors 31-39: 3%
Siderite (Iron) Ore: Floors 1-9: 0.5%, Floors 11-29: 1%, Floors 31-39: 1.5%
Oxidized Gold (Gold) Ore: Floors 1-39: 0.08%, Floors 41-49: 0.5%, Floors 51-69: 1%, Floors 71-79: 1.5%
These rates correspond to an approximate average of one node per floor for every 1% chance in testing.
Rationale for Creating This Mod:
Adding New Nodes to the Mines:
For players who don't love the mines, may struggle to descend quickly, or who don't want to feel rushed to descend as fast as possible until they reach the lava/purple earth zone in order to unlock all of the core ores: this mod adds trickles of the next zone's resource in increasing frequency the deeper you get in each respective zone. The intended effect is that the player does not feel forced to, for example, reach level 40 in order to craft their first Bee House or Lightning Rod. Instead, just enough iron for one bar should be obtainable after reaching floor 15 or so. This mod also expands the sources of coal to aid in resource collection for crafting or smelting.
Coal Ore Nodes:
Have you found it difficult to accumulate an adequate supply of coal to meet the demands of both smelting and crafting (preserves jar, bee house, seed maker, etc.) in a "normal" playthrough (one where you're not spending tens of thousands of gp to Clint for his infinite coal, or farming Dust Sprites for days)?
This mod aims to add a balanced, additional source of coal in the regular mines in the form of coal ore nodes (concentrated in the brown earth zone, floors 1-39) to mitigate the need to over-farm traditional vanilla sources of coal (Dust Sprites) and add more variety to coal-farming gameplay. Coal is most abundant in the Shadow zone (floors 31-39), a reward for braving the darkness and a reason to return to this zone in the future.
Iron and Gold Ore Nodes:
In the early game (Spring and Summer Year 1), a driving force in gameplay is acquiring the resources to craft quality sprinklers to reduce the need to manually water crops. This requires the player to need to reach level 40 of the mines for iron ore nodes, and level 80 for gold ore nodes, as soon as possible. To some, this "forces" a particular style of optimization gameplay that is less-than-fun, as you fight against RNG to get ladders and stockpile food for energy to race to the bottom as fast as possible, only to have to return to previous floors to farm for resources because you didn't stop to collect everything on the way down because every delay might cost you your next elevator stop.
This mod implements a slow rate of next-tier resource collection as you descend each zone, such that you don't need to make it to floor 40 to get your first complete iron bar in an all-or-nothing pursuit (and likewise, floor 80 for gold). The intention is to enable the player to proceed through the mines at a more comfortable pace without sacrificing the opportunity cost of getting to a specific floor threshold before the day runs out, or else all of that day's effort was "wasted" with nothing to show for it. If you've ever spent an entire in-game afternoon and night stuck on floors 35-39 only to have to do it all over again the next day, you understand.
On the note of resource farming: when descending the mines, have you ever felt the need to rush through the Shadow zone (floors 31-39) on the first pass through, and found yourself never returning to those floors again when farming for ores? Likewise, have you found the risk/reward of the Frozen Castle (floors 71-79) didn't warrant a return trip except to farm skeletons?
This mod aims to add more incentive to return to the "challenge" zones of the brown earth and frozen zones of the mines by maximizing the spawn rates of the "low-grade next-tier" ore nodes in these zones. Hopefully, this also takes the edge off of the "I want to get out of here as fast as possible" feeling when descending through these levels. Still harrowing, but the rewards better match the risks.

About this Mod Family:
This mod is part of the Vanilla Content Extended family of mods that aim to extend specific aspects of the vanilla game. These mods improve the vanilla gameplay experience by reducing reliance on RNG, expanding gameplay options to acquire non-rare items, and performing other minor changes that match the spirit of vanilla gameplay while reducing frustrating feature implementations. All mods in this mod family are extensively playtested for game balance to make them feel as if they were always part of the vanilla game, or as if they were part of a title update.
Other mods in this mod family:
Vanilla Gear Crafting Extended - craft previously-uncraftable common items like basic rings, weapons, and tools
Vanilla Shops Extended - selectively extend the inventories of vanilla shops to provide alternative ways to acquire previously-unpurchaseable common items, and some rare items locked behind RNG and/or grinding (coming soon)
