Hi!! This has been a WIP for a hot minute now, and it's finally time I at least released a beta version of it ^-^ This mod recolors the map during winter, except saying recolor is a bit inaccurate... It removes the snow entirely*! It replaces the obnoxiously bright snow with a muted palette that's intended to be reminiscent of places where it does still get cold, but doesn't actually snow much in winter. I made this mod because as someone who is very photosensitive, the vanilla game and even other recolors are just too bright in winter for me.
I had to do a considerable amount of playing around with the tilesheets to be able to actually do this, even compared to a "normal" recolor, so a lot of this mod is still a WIP. But I wanted to get it out there so players can help me figure out what else I need to cover, as I can only discover so much while testing it myself. I'd love to also add some compatibility for other mods such as building mods and expansions in the future, but for the time being, it only covers vanilla tiles.
* I still haven't figured out exactly how to handle certain quirks of the game, such as the snow crunching sound when stepping on grass. It'll remain for now. There is also some snow on the Ice Festival map, but I kept it as minimal as possible.
If you see anything that looks like it should be recolored but isn't, please send me a screenshot in the posts or bug reports area (and further location context if the screenshot isn't clear) so I can take note of that and work on fixing it. If you have questions about what all the mod covers so far and what I have planned for it, scroll down a bit to the compatibility section.
UPDATE (7/16/24)
Mod has finally been updated to deal with the lack of coverage on Beach and Meadowlands farms! Sorry for taking so long on this, but now this mod should fully cover those farm types! <3

AT THE MOMENT, this mod is not very expansion compatible, especially if the expansions use new tilesheets.
That said, the main problems with expansions will be any snow covered objects/buildings. I currently do not have this mod touching any non vanilla buildings, so how good this mod will look with other buildings is ... very questionable at the moment. So I would recommend using mods for expansions that alter the buildings to make them stand out a bit less, such as Earthy Ridgeside, as an example.
KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITY:
My recolor is not intended to be used with Simple Foliage.
I may try to make a compatibility patch for it in the future, but my priority for now is to get more coverage out for problem areas I'm aware of. I don't use Simple Foliage, and I never have, so I was unaware it did that much to make trees very snowy in the winter. My recolor is intended to be used with my own foliage, and for now, until I redraw other trees, some vanilla foliage as well. (Vanilla winter fruit trees don't have snow on them. If you have snow on them, it's because of Simple Foliage. I recommend turning off as many Simple Foliage trees during winter as possible for now, until I decide if I'm going to try to tackle the compatibility or not.)
CURRENT COVERAGE/COMPATIBILITY:
Most 1.6 tilesheets should be covered.
This mod should load after other recolors, and thus work fine with them. Whatever it doesn't cover, is probably covered by whatever other recolor you have. (There may be a tiny bit of weirdness with GI tiles, but the patch that does that is location based, so it shouldn't be affected.)
PLANNED COMPATIBILITY:
Certain tilesheets such as DaisyNiko's and Lumisteria's
Ridgeside Village
East Scarp
Visit Mount Vapius
+ others down the line if I get to these three first
IF YOU WANT COMPATIBILITY FOR STARDEW VALLEY EXPANDED, DO IT YOURSELF.
The amount of work that would go into SVE compatibility for this recolor would be absolutely ridiculous, and as I am not personally a fan of SVE, I do not see the benefit of going through the work to make compatibility for an expansion I never intend to play. That said, feel free to reach out to ask me for tips on how I made this if you'd like to make it SVE compatible yourself. I'm active on the Stardew Valley discord and am in plenty of mod related servers, my discord user if you'd like to DM me to discuss this is katrie. (with the period.) I could even potentially send some PSD files to you so you can get the colors exact.
If anyone makes the SVE compatibility for this mod, you are perfectly free to make your own mod page for it if you desire, as you wouldn't be using any of my assets... probably anyway(and yes, I did have to completely redraw some assets in this mod. Mostly trees.).
Plans for this mod's future:
I don't really have a specific roadmap for this mod's development, but I will be updating it semi regularly as I recolor more assets and add more patches.
The plans currently include but are not limited to:
- Making the footstep sounds in "snow" ... match, audio-wise
(Currently, you'll still get the sound of weird snow crunch when walking in grass. I'll have to figure out how to turn it off in the near future, but for now, it's just visually a bit different.)
- Making this mod a bit more modular
(I would like to make it more configurable than it currently is, but for now I just want people to be able to play and test things for me, and maybe spare some people's eyes a bit in the process. Examples: I would like the color of water to be able to be more noticeably different in the config options, as well as maybe having darker dirt options...)
- Splitting this mod fully into two components, one consisting of my recolor and one for my foliage.
(This way, it should hopefully be easier to replace the trees if you prefer other mods for the trees. Can't guarantee it'll look great if they're snow covered though :P I redrew the trees completely for a reason. The foliage alone will also get its own mod page eventually, but I need to tweak the non winter seasons first.)
- Adding expansion compatibility
- Adding building retexture mod compatibility
The extra compatibility where I'd potentially be editing other people's assets will probably end up in entirely separate mod pages, just for the record. Though I think I'd make just one mod page for expansion compat in general, and one for building retexture compat. The potential problem with these extra compatibility options is permissions, as some people don't want their assets to be edited. I'll see when I get to this extra compatibility what all I can and can't do.
- Making this into a full recolor for all seasons.
(I was originally trying to do this from the beginning, but I know a lot of people including myself have problems with the snow in winter being too bright, and otherwise love other recolors. When I do get to making it a full recolor, it will be named something different and have its own mod page. This will likely be a lot further down the line though, as I'd like to get this version of the mod up to a better standard first.)
HUGE credits to Lavliette for the 1.6 Paint Masks, I would not have been able to get this mod done in anywhere near as timely of a manner without them.
