Can you add a 'Wand', A.K.A the Return Scepter, to the specific item category?
Other than that, this is a great mod

JOWER, it's confusing for me. I would like to put in this sequence:
    -SWORD
    -PICKAXE
    -AXE
    -HOE
    -COFFEE
    ETC

I'm so glad this mod exists, thank you! However, I have a problem where, every time I come back to a chest or take something from it, it will revert to the organization where the last thing I put inside it is at the end. Any idea why that might be happening?

Edit: this also happens when I put something inside it.

Hey, thanks for the fantastic mod.

I'm wondering, is it possible to have item sorted into the second row? When I'm exploring the mines I like to have my sword on the second row, I find it easier to switch that way.
    https://i.imgur.com/zCDq7OL.png

I guess it won't be possible without a lock in place function?

That's unfortunately not possible with the way the mod works. You can't specify positions for items, only sort them. I've considered remaking it with a more advanced system, but since I've stopped playing Stardew that's unlikely to ever happen.

Hm, i think you _could_ disable autosort, then fill up your inventory's first line with trash, then the sword into the first slot on the second row.
Also, there is somewhere a mod where you sorta have multiple rows:
      Line 1: [ item][][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
      Line 2: [ ][ item][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
      Line 3: [ ][ ][item ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
Then you can switch between those rows.
(uhm, this is very hard to discribe and probably going to be more confusing than helping, sorry.)

Could you maybe be a little bit more precise in the description about the

CategoryNum - The numeric index of the category the item belongs to. Vaguely related to the previous option, but has more categories.

Is there maybe a list you could provide a URL for?
As an example, 1 large white egg of quality 0 and 1 large brown egg of the same quality get re-sorted every time i press the sort-button
so they exchange places in the sort-order.
I know this is a bit specific and sorting overkill, but... °grins° after all, that's what the mod is for.
(and i do not at all think you went overboard with the configuration options)

I don't know any good lists of category numbers unfortunately.
Both Large Eggs have category number -5 (Eggs), which is why they're sorted the same.
The only difference I can find between them is the Item ID (174 for large white and 182 for large brown) which you can't even sort on right now.
I like your attitude though, so I'll add that to make sure everything can be sorted!

Thanks for the fast response and the list :-)
Got my eggs in a row! (happydance)

°grins° Now add a date sorting option where we can sort by "date picked up first time" (kidding)

You can have different sorting rules for left, right and middle mouse click on the sort button (provided you use a mouse to play).

Does this mod allow you to sort your specific tools in a different order? E.g. Can, Pickaxe, Weapon, etc - instead of Axe, Hoe, Can, Pickaxe, etc. If so how would this look in the config.json file? Thank you for your time.

Yes, you can sort them in any order you want. Just write them in the order you want them in the config.json.

I use this order, weirdly though, Jower mentioned that gogshows post waas valid, yet "sword" produces this error:
"WARN Better Sort] Unknown sorting field: Sword" in the SMAPI error log.
(i use Stardew Valley 1.3.27 and SMAPI 2.6)
      "Sorting":
      [
      "Sword",
      "Axe",
      "Pickaxe",
      "Scythe",
      "Hoe",
      "Can",
      "Category"
      ],

I did? Swords are called "Weapon" I believe. From the description:
"Axe, Can, Hoe, Pail, Pan, Pickaxe, Rod, Scythe, Shears, Slingshot, Weapon".
      It matches all melee weapons.

I'm loving the mod, hope it comes to 1.3 eventually. It is now a must-have for me. But a suggestion I have is to add support for a new prefix in the config.json that would designate categories to be IGNORED by the sorting algorithm. For example, if this hypothetical new prefix was the symbol "*", then an entry in the config.json file might look like "*DisplayName=Return Scepter". Then, in-game, if I place the Return Scepter in my inventory (I like to have it in the first slot of the second row) and sort, the sorting algorithm would never move the Return Scepter, even if there was an open spot in a previous row. Additionally, items that do get sorted would be sorted "around" the Return Scepter. I don't know if my description of the desired behavior is clear enough, so if you want to see a working example of what I'm talking about, basically I'm describing the inventory sorting behavior that Terraria uses when you mark an item as a "favorite" (you can do this in Terraria by holding "alt" and clicking on an item in the inventory, but I understand that using a .json file would be the more appropriate implementation in this case).

I've been meaning to update it to 1.3, but I don't feel very motivated until it's properly released. Might release a beta if I feel inspired.

What you're describing wouldn't work with how the sorting works right now, but I've thought about making a more advanced version at some point, perhaps more like the Inventory Tweaks in Minecraft. I don't actually play Stardew any more though, so don't get your hopes up too much.

Any way this mod could be compatible with Vertical Toolbar mod? I love both of them but having the vertical toolbar makes this one less useful.

Thank you so much for this mod. I have fought with the sorting of my tools constantly.
