What does this mod do?

Adds Deer as a Big Barn animal, purchasable at Marnie's shop.  Fawns grow into adults after four days, and happy adult Deer produce Deer Milk (yum!) every three days.  Deer Milk can be turned into Deer Cheese in a Cheese Maker and aged in a Cask like other cheeses.

How is this "vanilla-balanced?"

Deer Milk (including L. Deer Milk) and Deer Cheese were valued in such a way to make them worth slightly less per day than regular Cow's Milk and Goat Milk and their respective cheeses, in line with the lower values of Goat produce compared with Cows'; the beneficial trade-off being less time spent tending to the animals, since they produce milk less often than daily.

Is this compatible with other mods?

Let's break this down into a couple of groups:

>>Gift Tastes -- NPCs feel about Deer Milk and Deer Cheese the way they feel about other milks and cheeses (but I did make them Loved Items for Linus); I've also built-in compatible gift tastes following the same rule for Stardew Valley Expanded, Ridgeside Village, and East Scarp-supported NPCs (i.e. every giftable NPC listed on their respective wikis).  Adding additional NPCs or changing tastes for each object yourself is as simple as opening the item's object.json file in something like Notepad++ and following along based on the way things are already set up in the small file.

>>Other Deer Mods -- I'm pretty sure that's gonna be a No just on principle, especially if another mod's deer animals have the same names and produce items.  If you want to use the sprites from another deer mod with my mod, by all means, just override BabyDeer.png and Deer.png in the appropriate folder with your preferred sprites.  You will need to edit the animal shop sign yourself, though--I recommend free image editing software such as GIMP for things like this in SDV modding.

>>Animal Husbandry Mod -- I've added an optional download file to serve as an Animal Husbandry Mod (AHM) ContentPack, allowing for this mod's Deer to be exchanged for meat.  A further optional download is provided for those who don't already have another mod providing a Venison item for the Deer to be turned into by AHM, such as Fresh Meat, which is highly recommended over my tiny Venison add-on.

>>Other Mods that Add Venison -- Super easy: if you're already using a mod that adds Venison, just don't download the optional Venison add-on that exists solely so Animal Husbandry Mod doesn't lose its mind when trying to exchange Deer for a non-existing meat item.  If you aren't using AHM, there's no need to download my Venison add-on at all, as it will simply add an unobtainable item to your game.

How do I install Deer Mod?

Assuming you know where to put your SDV mods in general, follow these steps:

  • Download and install SMAPI
  • Download and install Json Assets and its requirements
  • Download and install Producer Framework Mod and its requirements
  • Download and install Custom Cask Mod and its requirements
  • Download and install the unofficial update to Better Farm Animal Variety, located here
  • Download and install farmerjack's Deer Mod!
  • If using Animal Husbandry Mod, download and install the additional ContentPack for Deer Mod in the Optional Downloads section.
  • Override the farmerjack's Deer Mod folder in your Mods folder with the AHM version so that the deer can drop Venison instead of Mutton (there should only be one [BFAV] farmerjack's Deer Mod folder after this since you're replacing the original one with the AHM version)
  • If you need a Venison item for Animal Husbandry Mod, download and install the additional Venison add-on in the Optional Downloads section.
