So, oddly enough, the tiles that take up window positions in the interior tileset are hardcoded to have certain behaviors. I don't know if it's because I'm using interior in my tileset name, or this behavior is the same for other tilesheets, so to keep it simple, I moved the affected tile to another coordinate and colored the affected tile red to indicate not to use that position again.
I was disappointed that creating a vertical wall meant taking up two tiles in width, taking up more real estate than was necessary. To allow for single width vertical walls I created this mashup tileset that gives you just about every combination of single width vertical wall connections that I could come up with using the vanilla assets.
It also allows for a directly diagonal southern wall.
As of now, it's an untested tileset, so use at your own risk.
