NPCs will gladly take care of your belongings with this *chest retexture* for Alternative Textures. This mod requires Alternative Textures to work, you can find it listed in the required files below.
Notes:
They still have the default chest creak sound when "opened" and the NPCs do not move unless you interact with them. They each have new custom animations upon "opening".
I personally use this for a market-themed farm so most of the NPCs are traders or merchants from across the game, they're also good for placing around the world instead of clunky wooden chests. Enjoy!
