First of all, you'll want to install the Generic Mod Config Menu mod if you haven't already. This will allow you to directly change the config settings in-game and see the results on the next tick of the in-game clock (or upon leaving and re-entering the building if time is frozen).

Then download my mod "Better Slime Hutch". It has two dependencies that you will also need, "Extra Map Layers" and "Slime Hutch Water Spots". You need the latter even if you aren't planning on raising slimes.

Once everything is installed, start up Stardew Valley and build a slime hutch. When you go inside, it should look like this:

To customize it, open the GMCM and find "Better Slime Hutch" in the list.

Once you're in the menu, you'll have a variety of options.

BACKGROUND OPTIONS:

  • Greenhouse
  • Slime Hutch
  • Cellar
  • Shed

This choice will affect the walls and lighting of the building. If you choose "Greenhouse", the back wall will be a window as above.

Click "Spoiler" to see the other options:

Slime Hutch Background Option:

Cellar Background Option:

Shed Background Option:

Note that the wall on the shed goes one tile lower than the rest of the walls. This was necessary due to how the assets are drawn.

At this time, you cannot change the wallpaper or use catalog flooring. I am hoping that after 1.6 is released, I can add the ability to change the wallpaper in the shed and cellar.

You can change the flooring to a limited set of options in the GMCM:

Left floor type options:
Right floor type options:
Middle floor type options:

  • Greenhouse-style
  • Shed-style
  • Slime Hutch-style
  • Cellar-style
  • Grey Greenhouse-style
  • Dirt (all diggable)
  • Grass (all diggable)

The Middle floor type has an additional option:
  • Special Wood Style

The flooring on each side and in the middle can be configured independently:

Left floor type: Greenhouse-style
Middle floor type: Special Wood Style
Right floor type: Shed-style

Left floor type: Slime Hutch-style
Middle floor type: Slime Hutch-style
Right floor type: Cellar-style

Left floor type: Dirt (all diggable)
Middle floor type: Special Wood Style
Right floor type: Grey Greenhouse-style

Left floor type: Grass (all diggable)
Middle floor type: Grass (all diggable)
Right floor type: Grass (all diggable)

The grass floor can be changed with the seasonal setting:

Inside grass floor season options:
  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Match
Choosing "Match" will make it match the actual game season (if it's fall, the grass will be orange, etc.)

Since the dirt and grass floors are all diggable, you can use them to set up your own custom look or layout. Combine with my Greenhouse-style Wood Floor Border mod if you want to add borders around custom crop beds.

The mod also has built-in layouts under "Crop or Tree Layout" below.

Clipping (overlapping) options:

  • Allow Clipping
  • No Clipping

This controls whether fruit trees or other 'tall' things will 'clip' or 'overlap' over the left and right walls:

No clipping

Crop or Tree Layout Options:

Left layout type or Right layout type options:

Crops (more options below)
Fruit Trees (more options below)

These settings won't do anything unless "Crops (more options below)" is chosen for the Left layout type or Right layout type above.

Irrigated crops like taro and rice are considered watered automatically with this layout.

Water Source (for watering cans only) Options:

Water Source on the left and right side options:

  • Animated fountain

  • Invisible

NOTE: These water sources are for refilling watering cans ONLY. They will not irrigate plants or feed slimes! For slime raising, see the next section.

The animated fountains are part of the Ornamental Garden Furniture pack and are used with permission.

If Invisible is chosen, you can place other items in those spots.

Slime Raising Options:

Left slime water feeders options:

  • Far left feeders
  • Near left middle feeders
  • Both far left and middle feeders
  • No left feeders

Far left feeders

Near left middle feeders

Both far left and middle feeders

The right feeders follow the same pattern.

If you have both the near middle feeders, you can stand between them and fill both at the same time with an upgraded watering can

All floors have an invisible barrier that keeps slimes from crossing it. (They can still drink the water even if technically they can't access it.)  You can raise different types of slimes on each side and they won't be able to interact with each other. You can also raise slimes in the top area behind the glass. You may wish to download Change Slime Hutch Limit to increase the number of slimes you can raise.

Top slime water feeder options:
  • Top left (greenhouse only)
  • Top right (greenhouse only)
  • Both left and right (greenhouse only)
  • No top slime feeders

Both left and right (greenhouse only)

This gives you a third area to raise different slimes in.

The options below are just for changing the look of the Greenhouse background and the area outside the window. When I have time, I'll add more screenshots. For now, just experiment with them using GMCM. :)

To edit the "outdoor" space, you can pass through the wall or glass at the far left and right sides.
