Crunchy crits makes it so that instead of doubling the damage dice for a critical hit you add the maximum of said damage dice on top of your normal damage roll.
So as an example when you crit normally what happens is:
Short Sword (1d6) becomes 2d6 which means the range is 2-12 (+Strength/Dex) Greatsword (2d6) becomes 4d6 which means the range is 4-24 (+Strength/Dex)
What happens with crunchy crits is:
Short Sword (1d6) becomes 6 + 1d6 which means the range is 7-12 (+Strength/Dex) Greatsword (2d6) becomes 12 + 2d6 which means the range is 14-24 (+Strength/Dex)
As you can see crits will always be on average better, but this does not effect the maxium damage a crit can do.
