Book Covers Skyrim - Lost Library brings high quality covers in the style of Book Covers Skyrim to a very broad range of over two hundred books from previous Elder Scrolls games and their expansions. It is a logical extension to Book Covers Skyrim and is fully compatible with this mod.

Subjects range from light-hearted comedy, traditional poetry, plays, stories and legends to heretical diatribes, dark prophecies, cult agendas and insane gibberish.

The new books will be found on Merchants of many types as well as on any NPC that you would expect to have books in their inventory. Similarly, any container that could previously provide a book will have a chance of the new titles.

Please be aware that the Merchants are not guaranteed to have one of the new books as the lists they draw from have a chance of no item. While a General Merchant is quite likely to have a Cheap or Common book or two, you would have to ask the Jarl's Wizards or the Orc Wisewomen if they are lucky enough to have any of the rare or valuable books. Members of the Thieves Guild with access to the Fences will find they tend to be well supplied. Urag in Winterhold is particularly well connected with book suppliers and Brand Shei in Riften has a specific interest that fits with his history.

One book has been defined as a skill book for each of the game's skills and has been hand-placed in the world. Placement does tend to have a certain logic to it. While some are fairly easy to find, others are well hidden. If you are used to searching for rare items in Morrowind, you will feel at home here. Skill books will never appear in a Merchant's inventory or on an NPC. Many of the skill books will have an owner that you may have to become friends with in order to take the book without stealing.

Hi there! I'm so sorry to bother but I seem to be having an issue. No matter what I do this mod doesn't take effect. I've installed the necessary patches and attempted manual install, vortex install, moving it to the bottom of my load order (except for applicable patches) and more. The lost Library tomes show up fine but the vanilla books remain...well vanilla. I've even started a new game to see if maybe the covers were just baked into my save. Is there a help thread or something for this mod where I can post my load order or get some advice? To me it's a necessary addition that I've had since oldrim.

Send me a Nexus PM with your load order and I can look. It is most likely to either be an out of date compatibility patch or possibly a Bashed Patch that needs regenerating.

If you want to take a quick look yourself, install SSEedit into the Skyrim folder, run it and let it Load All. Once it has finished (and it will take a while), find Book Covers Skyrim in the left panel, expand it till you can see the Book group. Open that and click the Full Name column heading to sort it alphabetically. Pick one book you know has a vanilla cover and then look over at the right panel. There will be multiple columns. One will be the vanilla record for that book. There may be an unofficial patch version then a Book Covers one. If anything comes after the Book Covers version, that will be the mod which is affecting the books. Last one "wins".

Thanks so much! I'll look into it myself and if I can't make sense of it I'll send it your way.
AH, I figured it out!! I had better descriptions which seems to overwrite the covers even with a compatibility patch. When I removed it I was annoyed because it didn't work but it turns out I also had it in a merged file with a bunch of other qol type mods. After a bit of pain because I'd deleted the merge and had to make a new one but kept crashing my save, eventually I fixed it. And I learned a lot about xedit in the process! Now I know how to delete stuff in it to stop conflicts so thanks!!

So I encountered a bug while using this mod. When I was doing the The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller quest the Mysterious Note would not spawn. This happened to me twice: the 1st time I had no idea what was happening. I got so frustrated to the point that I deleted all my saves, uninstalled Skyrim SE and all the mods I was using. The 2nd time, this time around, I found out that this mod prevented it from spawning. Granted, I knew just enough to use mods the 1st time it happened but now I have a better understanding of them. I currently have 116 mods running including this. The only other mods I have affecting books are the Weightless Books with the Weightless Books & Book Covers Skyrim Patch, Font Overhaul - Natural Typefaces for Skyrim - Books and Notes Only, and Unread Books Glow SSE. I've already tried rearranging them in different orders including this mod but nothing works. The only thing that made the note spawn was uninstalling and removing this mod. Not a big deal to be honest, but I just don't want to uninstall and reinstall when something is not properly spawning. Also note that other in-game Notes/Books may not spawn correctly as well. The only other quest I'm having issues with this is the Missing In Action quest. The note(?)/book to find Thorald is not spawning correctly either. I can't currently test it as I'm nowhere near it as of now. However I am pretty sure this mod is also affecting it. Well that's just what I wanted to let you know. Thanks for reading my long post.

It is almost certainly the Weightless Books cheat mod as it is out of date and the author has not updated it to support the current BCS version.

It is simple to confirm. Use SSEEdit and allow it to Load All. Select Book Covers Skyrim, expand it in the left panel and look at the BOOK records. Click on the column heading for Full Name to sort by name. Pick one of the books or Notes you know is not appearing and then check the right panel. There will be several columns which show the mods that affect that book. If there is one to the right of Book Covers Skyrim, that will be the mod at fault.

If you want an up to date weightless books cheat, look at Weightless Overhaul

Thanks for replying back to me. I guess it really wasn't your mod's fault then. I never heard about SSEEdit but better now than never. I'll have to learn to use it just in case I come across more bugs. Also huge thanks for letting me know about an up-to-date all-inclusive weightless mod. Definitely going to endorse it and your mod.

Actually, it's your mod. (I didn't have, nor never had "Weightless Books"
Also bugs "A Night To Remember" (Can't pick up the note on the floor)
And the quest (forget the name) where you break into the home in Whiterun when you need to steal a book for the Grey-manes.

The notes and books are "invisible" quest maker points to them, but there is nothing there and you can't pick them up.

I removed your mod and they all reappeared.

Have you checked with SSEEdit to see if anything else affects those books? Do you have loose files from manually unpacking an older version of the BSA?

I can confirm this is happening as well in my game. I have lots of mods, but no weightless anything or font mods and I'm on a new playthrough with a new versions of all mods (July 2018). Basically, any special book related to a quest is missing from the game. This includes the books from the College of Winterhold question (Hitting the Books, I think?), the Thorvald missive, the Butcher's diary (from Blood in Ice), etc. Since these books are involved in quests, I've been able to spawn them in my inventory and proceed, but thought I'd let you know. I *love* this mod and have used it in every single playthrough of my 2500 gameplay hours so please don't take this as criticism.

It would really be a good idea to check in SSEEDIT if anything else is affecting the quest books.

If a quest book is invisible it usually means the game is looking for the wrong world mesh. This value is stored in the BOOK record for that object and while it is something BCS edits, many other mods do too. SSEEDIT will quickly show the last mod to edit a record.

Many thanks for your prompt reply!

I reinstalled the desaturated versions of both BC and LL along with some patches for CRF and Vals. I created a bashed patch then fired up the game -- pretty much every book is gone now; I do see a few spellbooks and the occasional random book laying around, but most bookshelves are completely empty. I quit the game, then checked out Book Covers in SSE Edit and see that the Bashed Patch is to the right of it (I'm also using Lost Library and per your instructions there, I need to make a bashed patch to make that mod work).

I think I see the problem and I suspect it's my sorting mod patch (Vals). First, everything in the Books section is RED (never a good thing). Second, for a book from Hitting the Books question, the column for Book Covers gives the full name as The Last King of the Ayleids with the model filename clutter\books\BCSSEBookStandard.nif; the column for Bashed Patch (to the right of Book Covers) gives the full name as [Book] The Last Kind of the Ayleids with the model filename as clutter\books\LastKindAyleids.nif. I'm guessing the sorting mod is overwriting the book name and filename and the game then can't place the book in the correct spot?

My apologies if I'm not explaining this in the correct terms. I'm not a modder :(

UPDATE: After some intense hours with SSE Edit I discovered it's the mod Non-Automatic Skill Books that was the problem (in conjunction with an old version of Vals sorting mod). I installed the current version of VIS, BC and LL, and all patches, then removed NASB and created a (new) bashed patch. Books have returned to Skyrim! I'm sad to lose that mod but will work around it to keep using this one.

It sounds like one of the book-related mods you were using predated the most recent version of Book Covers Skyrim as DDE was when I was able to use Texture Sets to make the mod much more efficient. Previously for the World mesh of the books there was one mesh and one texture for every individual book. With Texture Sets I was able to have one common world mesh that was used for all books and simply reference the texture I wanted to use in the ESP. Not all Compatibility Patch mods have caught up with that change.

I had the same issue, checked it out with SSEEdit and the only mod to touch it was this one. Disabled it, loaded up, note was there. Looted note, advanced quest and re-enabled mod. All good...was driving me nuts.

Are the people having problems with this mod using the mod Not So Fast in conjunction? Because I noticed there's a patch for that.

I've been wanting to try this mod for a long time, so I'll see if it gives me problems with the Jurgen Windcaller quest. I suspect it will not.

The quickest way to find out which mod or compatibility patch is causing this is to use SSEedit. If you don't have it already, get it from the Nexus, install it into the Skyrim main folder (with the other Skyrim exes) and run it. It will automatically find all your mods and show them.

Allow it to Load All plugins so it can look at everything that may be affecting the books. This may take a minute or two the first time so be patient. Click on Book Covers Skyrim in the left panel, expand it a little, select Books then click on the column header to sort the books by Full Name. Scroll down to find the book that is causing the crash.

Look at the right window and you will see several columns, one for each mod that affects that book. Towards the left will be the main Skyrim files where the book was first defined. To the right of those will be Book Covers Skyrim telling the book to use my new meshes. Anything to the right of the Book Covers Skyrim will either be changing the contents of the book or possibly the meshes. The mod furthest to the right is likely to be the mod that is causing the crash. You will then need to contact the author of that mod to get the issue fixed. It will be either the World Mesh or Inventory Mesh that is the problem.

The Spanish ESP is in the Optional Language Pack. You still need the main download as it contains the English textures in the BSA archive. You will then end up with the pictures drawn on the books being in English but the book titles and contents being Spanish.

Unfortunately, Book Covers and the Lost Library both need to get .nifskoped as they are .bsa format. This is honestly painful for me.

Please explain? The meshes are appropriate for Skyrim Specail Edition and BSA is how texture replacer mods tend to be packaged for release. If you want the files loose, you can do it yourself with DDSopt

Huh? BSA is a compression method used by the game to package data for a mod. They can contain textures, meshes, scripts, etc. It's an easy way to keep stuff together. But a mod doesn't necessarily need them as you will find many with a "loose files" option.

But nifskope is a program that allows one to manipulate data in a mesh file (ie, nif). Meshes in LE are not compatible with meshes in SE. One would use NifOptimizer to update the old to the new. After optimization you can then put them in a BSA if you want. Why you are thinking BSA and NifSkope have some kind of synergy?

I don't understand what your problem is. You are implying that the mod is not showing the new covers for books in your inventory? If that is the case then some other mod or patch that is loaded after this one is conflicting and removing some or all of the edits from Book Covers Skyrim. Remember that in Skyrim, the "last mod wins" in any conflict.

DanielCoffey, do you still have the actual meshes package from mod (not converted into SSE Nif Optimizer)? I really need them, but not in the SE format.
P.S. The LE version does not contain the necessary changes and is not suitable for me.
