About this mod

My collection of Open Capital Windhelm patches, including a combined patch for JK's Skyrim and Dawn of Skyrim, a patch for Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen, and several patches between these and other mods.

Changelogs
Last summer, Domenicus released an Open Cities version of Surjamte's Capital Windhelm Expansion, but it hardly came with any patches for other mods affecting the Windhelm worldspace. I decided to change this, and here is the result. In particular, I wanted to combine the Open Capital mods with both JK's Skyrim and Dawn of Skyrim, and thus I have focused the collection around such a build. Now also includes patches for Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen. Included patches:

Standalone patches:
  • Immersive College of Winterhold (removes a tree that was blocking the teleporter)
  • JK's New Gnisis Cornerclub (moves the back door away from the camp outside the main gate)
  • JK's Palace of the Kings (interior navmesh + conflict resolution of one record)
  • Skyrim Sewers (navmesh patch)
  • Sounds of Skyrim (adds an acoustic space to Windhelm that is covering the new districts; this is missing from the original Open Cities patch)
  • Skyrim Sewers + JK's Palace of the Kings (navmesh patch)
  • Skyrim Sewers + Vigilant (navmesh patch)
  • Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen (clears all objects of snow in summer, fixes landscape conflicts and removes most grass from Windhelm, fills holes exposed by the removed snow drifts and fixes object placement)
  • Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen + JK's New Gnisis Cornerclub (landscape patch)
  • JK's Skyrim + Dawn of Skyrim (base patch for the mods below)

Combined Open Capital Windhelm - JK's Skyrim - Dawn of Skyrim patches:
  • AI Overhaul (adjusts some AI markers)
  • Bells of Skyrim (moves the bell to the location from TheNizorro's patch for the closed worldspace)
  • Blowing in the Wind (conflict resolution)
  • ELFX Fixes (adjusts placement of a few objects)
  • JK's Candlehearth Hall (patches the exterior to account for the other mods)
  • Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen (landscape patch)
  • Legacy of the Dragonborn + Skyrim Sewers + Bells of Skyrim + JK's Candlehearth Hall + JK's New Gnisis Cornerclub + Beyond Skyrim Bruma - Tamrielic Influence (combined navmesh patch; a version without BS Tamrielic Influence is available as a miscellaneous file)

NB: Players updating the Seasonal Landscapes - Unfrozen patch to version 1.5 or later also need to update the Seasonal Landscapes - Additions mod to version 1.3 or later. Otherwise you will get frozen trees during summer.

I have unfortunately not made any standalone Open Capital Windhelm patches for the other included mods, since those would not be very useful for my own build, neither do I think I will have time for it. However, I can provide instructions on how to make your own.

The observant modder may notice that some of the patches come with a closed-city variant that is adapted for the worldspace changes that came with Open Capital Windhelm. In particular TheNizorro's and robertgk2017's JK's Skyrim and Dawn of Skyrim patches required a couple of adjustments to fit these changes, and I also made sure to fix some issues with the patches themselves. Unfortunately the worldspace consistency file that is included in Open Capital Windhelm is currently not very useful on its own. Therefore, I am not planning to release these patches separately at the moment.

You may also notice that I have removed all the scathecraw that Dawn of Skyrim has added to the alleys in the Grey Quarter. The reason is simple: it would not grow there.

Patches for only JK's Skyrim + Dawn of Skyrim are available for some of the mods here: JK's Skyrim - Dawn of Skyrim Open Cities patches.

Performance
Performance is decent, but you will clearly benefit from a graphics card with a lot of VRAM. At first, I was using a Radeon R9 380 with 4GB VRAM, but then I experienced stuttering in some areas, in particular with the JK's Skyrim - Dawn of Skyrim patch. After upgrading to a 3060 RTX with 12GB VRAM, the stuttering is gone. My CPU is an overclocked quad-core i5 4690K. If experiencing stuttering, do not try to access the map, since that may cause CTDs.

Compatibility
If only using a subset of the mods included in the combined navmesh patch, you may need to create your own patch for them to work together, or with Open Capital Windhelm.

Apart from this, the patches are all mutually compatible, and also (I think) compatible with my other Open Cities mods.

Unique Windhelm Farms is compatible if using Domenicus' patch and making sure that either the JK's Skyrim - Dawn of Skyrim patch, the Skyrim Sewers patch, or the combined navmesh patch loads after it.

DynDOLOD notice (updated 28/7 2023)
If you are using Seasons of Skyrim, you will have to generate LOD files by using DynDOLOD 3.0 Alpha (I recommend doing this also if you don't use Seasons of Skyrim). Make sure to upgrade if you have an older version than 123, since otherwise Open Cities requires a two-step process which does not work well with Seasons in my experience.

Moreover, DynDOLOD can be quite challenging to use even for an experienced modder, but I am not an expert, so don't turn to me for help if you run into issues. I myself had problems with LOD models not unloading at close distance during summer. This is apparently a common issue, and is due to a bug in the latest version of Seasons of Skyrim (1.8). I have read reports that the bug is not present in older versions, so if experiencing this, I recommend installing the previous version instead, i.e. 1.7.5.2. There are also models which remain snowy after DynDOLOD generation, so those will need to be added manually to the _SUM ini file.

Special thanks to hishutup for the Open Cities patch script - without it making these patches would not be possible.
