Introduction

My first large scope werewolf mod Tales of Lycanthropy came out in 2012. The first Moonlight Tales released in 2013! The last rendition Moonlight Tales Special Edition released in 2016. Before we continue I would like to thank everyone who played any iteration of these mods! It means a lot to me, and the team that worked on these projects. Thank you!

Moonlight Tales Mini is a compact werewolf addon created for maximum compatibility (fully compatible with Growl - Werebeasts of Skyrim). Features: Sanies Lupinus werewolf disease, lunar transformations, werewolf model and skin system, werebear skins, moon howling animation, revert form animation and more!

Highly Compatible

Moonlight Tales Mini does not edit any base game assets at all. Not a single one. Therefore, in theory it should be compatible with any werewolf mod that exists. To see if the features play nice with each other, one still has to test the theory in practice. I will list the confirmed fully compatible and tested werewolf mods that work well with Moonlight Tales Mini. Even if you do not see a mod you wish to play with on the list, you are welcome to try if they are compatible and test it yourself. Feedback of such tests are very welcome in the comments section! Current list of known fully compatible and tested werewolf mods:
 • Growl - Werebeasts of Skyrim by EnaiSiaion

Sanies Lupinus Disease

Inspired by the excellent Bloodmoon expansion for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the Sanies Lupinus disease makes it's return! This new disease can be caught from werewolves (a single strike from a werewolf will infect the player), and from wolves (each strike from a wolf has a very small chance to infect the player). If you do not cure the disease in three days time, the disease (once developed) will be equal to gaining beasthood from the Companions. It's meant as a role-playing immersive wilderness alternative to repeating the same Companions quest for the hundredth time. (You can still complete the Companions questline if you wish. You will be a werewolf already, but otherwise it will work correctly.) The disease comes with a lot of surprises, including dark omens in the form of visions you can read, sound effects, and an explosive finish as you become a full fledged werewolf. Only the player may catch this disease, followers and other NPCs may not. Once contracted, if cured, one develops immunity for three days (to avoid getting infected too often). The Sanies Lupinus disease feature can be enabled / disabled with the customization ring.

Werewolf World Encounters

Adventurers exploring Skyrim at night (from 9 PM to 5 AM) will now encounter wild werewolves through the game's World Encounter system. The technique for this feature was inspired by the Skyrim Anniversary Edition Creation Club addon called "Plague of the Dead", and was never before used in earlier Moonlight Tales mods. It is the cleanest and the most stable & optimal solution for this feature. These new wild werewolves are named as "Moonlight Werewolf" (and similar Moonlight themed names) and will wear one of the skins available in the mod (randomly selected from four realistic skins and all three models). They may also be accompanied by wolves named "Moonlight Wolf".

The world encounter werewolves will only use the following realistic skins (will also use all three models, so 12 variations in total):
 • Breton (Timber Wolf) by KrittaKitty with Snow Eyes
 • Dunmer (Dark Grey / Black) by KrittaKitty with Red Eyes
 • Imperial (Light Grey) by KrittaKitty with Brown Eyes
 • Redguard (Dark Brown) by KrittaKitty with Yellow Eyes

The following werewolves may be encountered in world encounters depending on the player's level and other factors such as werewolf difficulty:
 • Moonlight Werewolf - Level 1
 • Moonlight Savage - Level 6
 • Moonlight Brute - Level 12
 • Moonlight Skinwalker - Level 20
 • Moonlight Beastmaster - Level 28
 • Moonlight Vargr - Level 38

The following new world encounters are now possible:
 • 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty)
 • 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 2x Moonlight Wolf
 • 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty), 3x Moonlight Wolf
 • [2x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty)
 • [3x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty)
 • [4x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 20+]
 • [5x Werewolf] 2x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 30+]
 • [6x Werewolf] 2x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 2x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 40+]

Further details: To maintain maximum compatibility and stability, no vanilla assets were modified. The werewolves and wolves will react to the environment, and live in Skyrim's world as expected. If the Wolfkin Alliance feature is enabled and the player is a werewolf, then the wild werewolves and wolves added will be allied to the player even if the player is in human form. The Werewolf World Encounters feature can be enabled / disabled with the customization ring.

Returning Werewolf Models

The skin system once again features the choice of additional werewolf models in the selection.
Vanilla werewolf model by Bethesda.
The Howling werewolf model by Brevi (author of this mod).
La Femme Lycana female werewolf model by MadCat221.
Vanilla werebear model by Bethesda.

Moon Howl Animation & Combat Menu

You can now utilize view angles and sheathe your claws to active a special Moon Howl Animation and a Combat Menu. You can activate the Combat Menu by looking straight ahead (not high up, or low down) and sheathing your claws in werewolf form. This menu allows you to switch between the three available werewolf roars (the same as if you would activate the totems, but it does not require you to acquire the totems), toggle Night Vision or activate Revert Form. You can activate the Howl Animation by looking high up at the sky (not straight ahead, or low down) and sheathing your claws in werewolf form. This Howl increases the duration of your werewolf form by 20 seconds, and after the animation ends (~5 seconds), it also heals you for a small amount over the next 5 seconds (10% base health). Both of these features can be enabled / disabled with the customization ring.

Lunar Transformations

Skyrim offers picturesque views of the night sky and is faithful to details such as moon phases. In Moonlight Tales, your life as a werewolf or werebear is deeply bound to the stages of the moon. These transformations occur by themselves (forced) during nights depending on the influence of the Masser moon (the large moon in Skyrim). The transformation will last during the whole night and you will only regain your humanoid shape at 5AM in the morning. The transformation chance and many other details for each phase can be customized with the customization ring. Those of you who know the Tales of Lycantrophy mod will surely remember screen messages, warning the player about the imminent transformation. It's a full moon tonight!

* In Skyrim Bethesda defined the full moon to last through 3 nights. Many werewolf players sent me feedback requesting the full moon to only last for a single night instead like in real life (and also most works of fiction). I cannot modify the lunar cycle itself but I came up with an alternate solution instead. The night before and after the night of the full moon is now labelled as: The moon is almost full. This phase will come with it's own transformation chances allowing you to finally have only one full moon night per cycle.

Pre-Defined Presets:
• Full Moon Fever - This preset is for players who wish to transform only on the night of the Full Moon. This will occur only one night every 24 in-game days.
• Warg - The Warg setting spreads relatively small transformation chances to keep lunar transformations rare and surprising. On the night of the Full Moon you will always transform and on the night of the New Moon you will never transform.
• Skinwalker - This is the default preset. The Skinwalker setting has balanced transformation chances to make lunar transformations happen occasionally but still not too often. On the night of the Full Moon you will always transform and on the night of the New Moon you will never transform.
• Cursed Blood - The Cursed Blood preset comes with high transformation chances and will result in a lunar transformation almost every night. Only the night of the New Moon will provide some safety.
• Nightmare - With the Nightmare preset you will transform every single night regardless of the moon phases.

Skin System

The skin system allows you to customize how your Beast Form will look like in-game. You can do this by equipping the configuration ring in your inventory, and then navigating to the Appearance Customization menu. Various talented authors kindly allowed Moonlight Tales to include their textures into one kickass package. See the Configuration and the Credits section for more information.

Configuration

This section goes over what settings and tools you can reach by using the in-game configuration ring in your inventory. The configuration ring is called "Ancient Ring" and it is added to your inventory after Moonlight Tales initializes for the first time. For this to occur you will have to be outside in the world of Skyrim for a few seconds. You must not be in-doors, you should not be in a scripted scene or in a tutorial sequence.

Installation

Moonlight Tales Mini does not require any other mod to be installed.
You can install it with Nexus Mod Manager, Mod Organizer or just manually drop the files in your Data folder.

The mod consist of the following files:
Moonlight Tales Mini.bsa
Moonlight Tales Mini.esp

If you wish to uninstall, just delete the esp and the bsa file, and you are done.

Questions and Answers

- Can the mod be installed in the middle of a playthrough?
Absolutely.

- Sinding's well escape animation does not play! Why?
This is a necessary evil. There is no way that you can introduce new animations of the kind into the game, without overwriting an existing one. (With base Skyrim and without third party executables you cannot.)

The only way that I could add the new Howl animation, is by replacing Sinding's escape. Sinding plays that "escapes the well" animation once in the game. If you have the choice of having a new awesome animation for werewolves all the time, or that one time Sinding will climb out of the well, the choice is a clear for me.

If you cannot live without Sinding's escape animation, you can try this mod:

Change Log

Version 1.25:
Fixed a visual glitch that caused the player's body to morph to black momentarily when using healing spells after using the Revert Form option from the Combat Menu. Thanks to Nexus user Iliav328577 for the bug report!

Version 1.2:
Fixed a situation in which becoming a werewolf through the Growl mod's new methods would leave a few required values incorrect. This would cause some Moonlight Tales Mini features such as the Lunar Transformation to not work on these werewolves.
 • If you became a werewolf through The Companions everything was already OK.
 • If you became a werewolf from Sanies Lupinus, or by using the Ancient Ring everything was already OK.
 • If you used "Werebeast Blood" an ingredient from the Growl mod to become a werewolf, some values were incorrect. Moonlight Tales Mini will correct these from now on.
 • If you sleep under the stars in the Growl mod to become a werewolf, some values were incorrect. Moonlight Tales Mini will correct these from now on.
If you used the above mentioned two Growl mod methods to become a werewolf, just load up the new version and turn into a werewolf once. It will fix the values.

Version 1.15:
Major improvements to the Werewolf World Encounters feature. Rebuilt the system to run without any scripts (for maximum performance). Improved handling of Travel Markers.
Three new encounters added for high level players. (See the lists below.)
The world encounter werewolves will only use the following realistic skins (will also use all three models, so 12 variations in total):
 • Breton (Timber Wolf) by KrittaKitty with Snow Eyes
 • Dunmer (Dark Grey / Black) by KrittaKitty with Red Eyes
 • Imperial (Light Grey) by KrittaKitty with Brown Eyes
 • Redguard (Dark Brown) by KrittaKitty with Yellow Eyes
The following werewolves may be encountered in world encounters depending on the player's level and other factors such as werewolf difficulty:
 • Moonlight Werewolf - Level 1
 • Moonlight Savage - Level 6
 • Moonlight Brute - Level 12
 • Moonlight Skinwalker - Level 20
 • Moonlight Beastmaster - Level 28
 • Moonlight Vargr - Level 38
The following new world encounters are now possible:
 • 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty)
 • 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 2x Moonlight Wolf
 • 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty), 3x Moonlight Wolf
 • [2x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty)
 • [3x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 1x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty)
 • [4x Werewolf] 1x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 20+]
 • [5x Werewolf] 2x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 1x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 30+]
 • [6x Werewolf] 2x Werewolf (easy difficulty), 2x Werewolf (medium difficulty), 2x Werewolf (hard difficulty) [Only from player level 40+]

Version 1.1:
New feature added: Werewolf World Encounters
Adventurers exploring Skyrim at night (from 9 PM to 5 AM) will now encounter wild werewolves through the game's World Encounter system. To learn more see the section dedicated to the feature in the description.

Version 1.05:
Improvements to the safeguard handling the player's relations with possible wolf and werewolf summons from the Totem of Brotherhood ability. Explanation: The Totem of Brotherhood ability summons wolf and werewolf pack members that aid the player werewolf in battle. These summoned fighters are allied with The Companions faction, and not with the player specifically. In this mod, it is possible to become a werewolf without joining The Companions guild because of the Sanies Lupinus disease. Even in release 1.0 there was a safeguard that made sure, that the summons will be in fact allied to the player, but I've found one scenario in which the safeguard would fail. Improvements were made, and now the safeguard will never fail.

Version 1.0:
Initial release.
