It's for the spectral sparring feature. There's a trigger box that sets the player to essential so that they don't die during sparring, and then removes the essential flag when they leave the Hall of Elements (or when they are struck by a guard or Ancano). The thing is, the flag is removed even if the player is "supposed" to be essential because they are using a death alternative mod.
