When you die, respawn in a safe location, and optionally drop selected valuables or gold in a player grave. Return and claim your belongings from the grave without dying again, or they will be gone for ever.

The aim of the mod is to allow a Dark Souls-like death and respawn mechanic, with gold playing the role of "souls". It works well alongside Gold Is Souls, a mod which replaces the normal Skyrim leveling system with one based on spending gold to increase skills.

This is a modification of the mod Respawn - Death Overhaul by watang, uploaded with permission.

Features

When you die (enter bleedout):
  • You respawn in a "safe place", which can optionally be the nearest temple or hall of the dead, the nearest player home, the last used bed, or the last used campfire (see below).
  • (Optional) you drop part or all of your gold, or equipment, or carried items, in a "grave" where you died. Only one of these graves can exist at a time, so if you die again before retrieving your belongings, they will be lost forever.
  • (Optional) alternatively, part or all of your gold or equipment is given to the enemy that killed you. You will need to kill them in order to reclaim it.
  • (Optional) you lose a proportion of the experience you have gained towards your next level, and/or a proportion of skill XP gained towards skill increases.
  • (Optional) non-boss enemies in the cell where you died are resurrected, healed and reset, just like Dark Souls. Bosses are also reset if they are still alive.
  • (Optional) You receive a quest to retrieve your belongings from your grave, which is the quest target. You can navigate to your grave by tracking the quest in your journal.
  • (Optional) prevent storage of gold. If this is active, you may not move gold from your inventory to any containers, corpses, or follower inventories. This is intended to be used along with the setting to drop gold on death. This way, you will always be risking your gold when you enter dangerous situations.
  • If Campsite, Campfire, Rest by Campfire, or Souls-like Bonfire Menu are installed, then interacting with a campfire will move your "bed" respawn point to that campfire. In addition, if the campfire is outdoors then a marker will be placed on the map to allow fast travel to the campfire. A total of 20 map markers can be placed at existing campfires in this way, after which the oldest markers will get reused. For player-built campfires, there is a single map marker which is reused when interacting with a new campfire.

Installation

Install the zip file using a mod manager (Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex), and enable Respawn - Death Overhaul.esp in your plugin list.

If you want to use the interactable campfires as respawn points, you also need to enable one or both of the campfire plugins:
  • Respawn Campfire patch.esp for Campfire Mod (you must "Use" the campfire when interacting with it)
  • Respawn Rest By Campfire patch.esp for Rest By Campfire and Souls-like Bonfire Menu.
  • Respawn Campsite patch.esp for Campsite mod (you must interact with a lit campfire).

Uninstallation

In the MCM, click on "Uninstall mod". Then save, exit, and disable this mod's esp files.

Known issues

  • There can be a delay of several seconds between being "killed" and respawning. If it seems like you have come back to life where you were killed, just wait a few more seconds and you should respawn in the correct location.
  • The campfire map markers do not appear until the game "refreshes" the map. When this happens is unpredictable but it can be forced by saving and loading.
  • The "reset bosses" feature may cause problems in some locations, or with some bosses, so is off by default, meaning that bosses are healed and moved back to their starting locations, but are not fully reset (Actor.Reset()). If you play with "reset bosses" turned on and you find a specific boss that "breaks" when reset, let me know and I will add it to the no-reset blacklists.
  • To respawn at player-built campfires from the Campfire mod, you have to choose to "Sit" when interacting with the campfire.
  • If you find your character has become silent after you respawn, this is a bug in Skyrim and affects all "death alternative" mods that use the bleedout state. You can fix this with PC Head Tracking and Voice Type SE (enable "Bleedout Bug Fix" in MCM).
  • If another mod gives the player a special "item" that they are not supposed to drop, but forgets to make this a quest item, then it is possible for that item to go into a grave or be given to an enemy when the player dies. Contact the author of that mod and ask them to prevent the item leaving player inventory, e.g. by making it a quest item.
