If you think about it no. It's a way of using clay (or a sort of it) to cover the top part so that the heat would not escape from the interior chamber where the metal is melting. Patches of tear drop clay pieces on top of each other. That was the idea.
Who in the right mind would waste that much shingle in such a pattern to cover a roof.
