About this mod

Bowen is a custom voiced, standalone follower who specializes in supporting you and other followers. He will sell your loot, share supplies with your followers and even heal you. Just don't expect him to clean your windows. He is essential and will not count towards your follower limit.

Bowen is a custom voiced, stand-alone follower who specializes in supporting not only you but up to 7 other followers as well.  He will not only heal but share supplies to reduce the need for you to micromanage your follower's inventories.  He does this by looting and trading with merchants for the supplies he needs, then detecting what items your other followers need and giving it to them.

He has his own reasons, values and a life of his own.  While he may have a generally quiet nature but as of v0.9.x Bowen has over 600+ lines of dialogue.  Much more is planned.

7/23/23
It's been far too long since the last release.  Thank you real life and work etc etc yadda yadda yadda.  I suspect things will just be slow going from here on out.  meh.. typical mod author almost has a life stuff.  You've heard it all 1000 times before I'm sure.  Anyhow..

Fixed a couple issues with the quest and added a modest dialogue update I hope y'all will enjoy.  Though while uploading the update I noticed a potential issue that could block some of it.  Figures.  That will be fixed in the next update sometime down the road.  Still, I'm pretty happy with the dialogue that was added.  Also, redid all of the quest audio.  It sounds SO much better.

As always, I will continue to work on Bowen for a long time to come even if the updates will sometimes be slower than I'd like.

Now, back to the 1.0 update.  Again.

You can check the sticky posts for the latest on the next update.  You can usually find me in Discord.

Known Issues & Fixes 0.12.5
  • When using the Uninstall/Reinstall option from the debug menu, the map marker will no longer display.  Unsure why.
  • Promises to Keep: Bowen needs better behavior.
  • When using a mortar & pestle Bowen seems to take awhile to break out of the animation (which he does).
  • Bowen may end up starting a scene with merchants while you're starting to walk away.  If you see him walking away from you that's usually why.  You should be able to break him out of this by talking to him.  Alternatively, follow him to the merchant and let him do his trade.
Roadmap to 1.0.0
1.0.0 Initial "complete" vanilla release.  I put that in "" because I will continue to work on Bowen for the foreseeable future.

Future plans

Plans for v1.0 focus mainly on polishing current features and new dialogue including interactions with other custom followers.

I would eventually like to work on other projects but I've come to realize that have a lot more to learn before I'm ready to tackle them.

  • Fomod install
  • ~700 "lines" of dialogue as of 0.10.0
  • An easy going unique quest
  • Configurable settings and debug options via MCM
  • Heal you and up to 7 other followers in combat
  • Will stop in-fighting between tracked followers
  • Manage his own inventory by looting and *trading with merchants.
  • Share supplies with other followers, including support for iNeed, SunHelm, Last Seed and Survival Mode
  • Follow a different schedule for each town
  • Translate the dragon language
  • Send Bowen ahead to wait for you at inns or in your homes
  • Send Bowen on 'Supply runs' where he will sell extra items and attempt to restock
  • Study new healing spells (if he has a tome in his inventory)
  • Can be married
  • Will teach you about the Dragon Language
  • Assign a player home for Bowen to live in (if your relationship is high enough).  Show him around the home to give him a schedule to follow.
  • Some handy QoL features in the MCM
  • Tracked followers now 'catch up' support
  • Bleedout behavior that will now keep Bowen in the fight so long as he has healing potions
  • Bowen will craft potions if he has the appropriate ingredients in his inventory and access to an Alchemy station or has a mortar & pestle (CACO or Beyond Skyrim)

Yes, this means you can load him up and send him away to sell your loot.  He will return to you when he is done.

* Be aware that you should NOT give Bowen your player crafted/enchanted items to sell.  He will only be able to get the base price for them.  He also cannot sell items for less than their sell price.  He will however still use (and therefore not try to sell) said items if they are the best he has available to him.  The general rule of thumb is he won't sell what he is using or thinks he needs.

When not following the Dragonborn, Bowen travels all over Skyrim.  He never stays in one place for more than a couple of days.  If you follow the main quest right away you'll have a good chance to find him.  He will arrive in Riverwood while you are at Helgen.  Afterwards he will travel to Whiterun, then Ivarstead.  He also has a quest tracker.  Otherwise, he will stay at each inn for a day or two before leaving for his next destination around 5:30am.

Known Conflicts
Bowen should be mostly compatible with everything.  The main notable exception will be the same with all other mods that edit any cell data.  I will make patches for specific conflicts but if you have a lot of mods you will probably need a custom patch to resolve them all properly as multiple patches will also conflict with each other making them hard to support.  I strongly recommend learning how to use SSEEdit/TES5Edit to make custom patches suited to your game.  It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it and you'll be glad you did!

Open Cities will have issues with Bowen's daily town schedules since he will be missing some markers.  It won't break him though and if he's actively following you he won't be affected.

I want to support as many mods as possible.  Additional patches will allow Bowen to recognize additional modded content such as merchants and alchemy ingredients.

Uninstalling
Bowen has an Uninstall option on the MCM menu's Debug page.  (SkyUI required for this) This will stop all quests with attached scripts for a presumably safe uninstall.  Though it's generally not recommended to remove mods during a game and naturally I would never recommend uninstalling Bowen, ever. ;)  Nevertheless, the option is there.

I've decided to remove links to my Patreon account for the time being.  You're also welcome to stop by my Discord channel for questions, feedback or support.  Thanks.
